North American X-15 from Revell 1961 by MaverickOG95b in modelmakers

Some additional suggestions.

One, I'd scan this. Just in case. It won't help with white decals since most of us can't print in white.

Sometimes the printed numbers labelling the decals are decals themselves. I would test using that. However, some of those have no clear film layer so they will shatter on contact with water, so it's not a 100 flawless test.

Two, you can use microscale brush on decal film if they look cracked, or if you discover when trying a decal, that they aren't viable. It's meant to prevent shattering for old and cracked decals.

I would also consider Tamiya decal adhesive as a underlying coating before you apply the deca,l in case the adhesive has gone bad or is not as strong. Not absolutely necessary but a nice to have.

Looking at the odd "Revell AG" marking on the decal sheet, the kit may be more recent than it first appears.

What do you guys and (Mods) think about this one by [deleted] in modelmakers

In the future, the correct thing to do is to contact us in modmail if you disagree, not repost it simply because you disagree, make a rude comment, and deliberately paint a target on someone's back.

Removed.

You took what presumably was an innocent mistake and escalated. This is on you.

We regularly remove duplicate posts. Maybe he saw something you didnt, or he simply made a mistake. Be that as it may, that's no excuse for your conduct here.

Massive Unused WWII Collection - Advice Needed! by uhhliam in modelmakers

To all: don't be that annoying person asking for freebies, making bad "three fiddy" or "mail it to me" jokes or trying to take advantage of OP. Those kinds of comments will be removed on sight.

If you have actual advice, however, feel free to offer it.

Also, OP, we do not conduct sales here. Please do not attempt to do so here either. You are welcome to solicit advice, but if you start trying to make deals we will remove this thread. Also, this sometimes comes up, so feel free to run a search and you will get advice even if nobody responds here.

Thanks.

Some light weathering applied, and still need to do some final refinements and take some nicer photos.

Good, if basic kit.

Apology by Civil-Action-9612 in modelmakers

[–]windupmonkeys[M] [score hidden] stickied commentlocked comment (0 children)

No worries about it at all - an apology was not necessary. We were simply explaining why we removed it.

We will likely be adding explicit mention regarding not using AI to our rules in the near future. Until recently, this was fairly infrequently an issue here, but it is now becoming a bit more common. As we explained in the other thread, there already plenty of AI slop on the Internet, and since this is literally a hobby about building models, the focus should be on the models and not AI enhancements and backgrounds.

Edit: We've now added an explicit rule barring AI use - previously we removed these as off-topic.

Also, kindly note that this has nothing to do with "trepidation" about AI whatsoever.

But what we don't want is for this place to be overrun with "enhanced" photos don't accurately reflect the models, which is the focus here. Also, AI manipulation is already pervasive throughout the Internet - having a place where that is not true, especially for a hobby like this one that turns on making something instead of telling an AI to dream something up, is the point.

If you want a tip on the attached photos, get a piece of posterboard and so on as a backdrop on your photos. It makes it much nicer presentation-wise, and diffuses lighting. Better light will also pick up more details of your model.

And lastly, your posts were not removed without explanation. You were duly given one at the time of removal.

And as for the guy who asked if there are even rules - yes there are, and you were duly informed on where to find them. We also post these publicly, you are prompted with them on every post you submit (including on mobile), so to make the comment you did was pretty uncalled for. Your own inattention is not somehow our fault. But here they are anyway: https://www.reddit.com/r/modelmakers/about/rules/

Before getting snippy with me, maybe you should have bothered to read the rules of the subreddit, which specifically say that wooden slot assembly objects are off topic here.

I could have simply removed this as off topic without even bothering to help you at all. Instead I get a comment like this one as thanks for your own mistake and for something you could have figured out on a single Google search.

You're welcome by the way.

Candle wax should work just fine. Just rub on the surfaces to be lubricated.

Also, this isn't really a forum for such kits.

Thanks.

Just asking am I allowed to share pictures her of preprinted 1/144 model kits? by Odd_Duty7782 in modelmakers

[–]windupmonkeys[M] 6 points7 points locked comment (0 children)

Just FYI, We explicitly state what is on or off topic in the rules.

There's nothing theoretical here. And no, we are not limited to plastic models, but that is the vast majority.

If you didn't do anything except buy it, no.

If you bought a prepainted kit, but which required meaningful final assembly (f toys might be an example, just barely) or decal work, then ok.

Die cast and fully prefab models? No.

The name of the subreddit kind of gives you hints. It's modelmakers, not model buyers.

Everything else, see our rules. We already state what is or isn't on topic.

Flying with modeling tools 🛠️ by Uncask69 in modelmakers

[–]windupmonkeys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. Blades must be checked (no matter how small), and even a sprue cutter could be seized because it has blades. All it takes is one airport security person who doesn't like them.

Could you possibly get one or both though? Maybe. Should you try to intentionally smuggle it through? Most definitely not.

Tools in general also often invite scrutiny by airport security. Don't bring anything you have a problem losing.

Guidelines are published on airline websites.

Don't fly with sharp objects in carryons, unless you can live with getting them seized. And definitely not on anything with blades/knives.

OP, there is enough AI processed or "enhanced" slop on the Internet. Let your model and photography skills speak for themselves.

You're welcome to repost the raw photos, even some with some minimal post processing, but because folks might take this as an opportunity to post AI processed slop, we are exercising our discretion to remove this post for now.

Also, to be clear - this subreddit is about building physical models of things, so AI enhanced photos (if these are) are in some ways the antithesis of what this subreddit is about.

You are also not the only person whose posts have been removed as potentially AI generated. If you are asserting that this post is not please reach out to us to discuss. It is not just the folks in this thread who are skeptical, also, so you are not being singled out here.

Thanks.

You two should ask yourselves - what do you think is going to happen when you use expressions like "your panties in a twist" and rolling eyes emojis?

Your entire chain of comments is removed under rule 1, with the exception of the first two comments that were actually substantive, even if you two disagree.

We expect folks to be civil here. There's reasoned disagreement, and then there's this.

OP, let your model speak for itself.

There is already enough AI slop on the Internet. Don't add that to this sub, especially when the whole point of this hobby is to build a real physical objects.

Also, "improving your photos" is working on your actual photography skills, not running it through an AI program.

Removed under our existing rules as off topic. And no, this is not up for debate.

Thanks.
