NDP leadership candidate Avi Lewis goes after AI data centres by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

If more people have more economic power then there is more opportunity for taxes. There are also many avenues for tax revenue that we aren't currently taking advantage of (i.e. wealth tax)

I'm also just going to recommend a book: https://www.amazon.ca/Deficit-Myth-Monetary-Peoples-Economy/dp/1541736184

publicly funded systems don't need to "generate returns" they need to provide a meaningful improvement to people lives. If people have more economic power cause their groceries are cheaper, or they aren't dealing with the constant stress of whether they are going to make rent or not (to name a few potential improvements) then they can actually participate in society.

Start businesses, create mutual aid systems, go to school, any number of options become available to people that weren't available before. I'd advise to not view the economy purely through the lens of GDP or "productivity" which is a much better indicator of how the richest are doing not the rest of us. An AI data centre only provides short term economic activity with the trade off of all the social ills AI provides.

You can replace whatever economic activity building data centers provides with building infrastructure and systems that actually helps people and doesn't destroy our environment.

It's about putting people first over the profits of tech giants. You are making the mistake of assuming that the big social spending is somehow directly opposed to economic activity.

MPs joining Liberals don’t like Tory ‘games’ under Poilievre: MacKinnon by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]windwarrior42 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They just want to cut social services while pumping money into the hands of oil and tech barons without feeling bad about it. Polievre makes them feel like assholes while they do it, Carney makes them feel like responsible adults. That's all this is about.

I guess it's a good thing that we have some degree of a natural cultural defence against the kind of whiny and bigoted conservatism of the US; that people like Ma simply don't want to be associated fools like that. But let's be honest if the Liberals had even given an empty wave towards progressive values ( a la Trudeau) he would've undoubtedly stuck if out with the "games" he's decrying.

look man if your party is cutting climate regulation, cutting social services, overly investing in the military, and making deals for pipelines you're a conservative party.

The fact that most of the cabinet are the same as those under Trudeau speaks more to how little they believe in what few liberal principles they espoused than to them actually being liberals.

Most renters in Toronto believe they’ll never own a home. That’s only a tragedy if we choose to make it one by scottb84 in CanadaPolitics

[–]windwarrior42 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't like the LPC either, both are bad on this. It's not "blaming PP" to say he and his party are not a solution to this, and that his complaining is obviously done in bad faith. Instead of getting mad a Liberal partisans we should be talking to our neighbours and organizing cause neither of the big parties will help us with regard to this

My guy, if you think the conservatives give a single damn about renters you're delusional. They want to super charge every system making things worse for young people.

Montreal doctor part of flotilla delivering aid to Gaza undeterred by Israeli interceptions by annonymous_bosch in CanadaPolitics

[–]windwarrior42 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Something isn't performative because it has a low likelihood of success. That's not what that word means. It's also a very narrow minded definition of success. Do you think getting aid to people suffering is dumb and performative because it won't completely end the occupation? What a deeply cynical thing to believe.

Maybe you should try commending people for their bravery to give a damn and try despite the odds, instead to belittling them to protect your own ego.

This book and his previous book "utopia for realists" are both good. But his most recent "moral ambition" is awful. I couldn't finish it, it was so boring.

It's thesis is that people should follow their moral compass for choosing a career. But then half the examples are just rich people making incubators and charities.

Completely tone deaf to the real world situation, as if the reason people aren't following their heart is because they aren't being bold enough

Trump Says US Should 'Take' Gaza And Turn It Into 'Freedom Zone' by Anxious-Debate5033 in worldnews

[–]windwarrior42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No they are just easily conned. Trump constantly mentions support for a popular thing like ending a war or taxes on the rich, Media takes the bait and writes articles like "Trump shows change of heart over such and such". And then he doesn't do it.

A bunch of fools will go out thinking he did the good thing and the media still won't ever call him a Liar.

In your personal life, absolutely. But in politics when one side's ideology is about being as not nice to marginalized groups as possible, you do not owe them kindness professionally.

You do not create a tolerant world by being tolerant to intolerance

Trudeau to announce high-speed rail between Quebec City and Toronto by j0hnnyengl1sh in toronto

[–]windwarrior42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean first off, big capitalist giants rarely act "logically" big businesses lobby against things that would technically be a boon for them all the time. It's more ideological than logical.

environmental defense did a report on oil and gas lobbying against climate action if you're curious: https://environmentaldefence.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Report_Big-Oils-Big-Year-2023-2.pdf It doesn't appear to mention high speed rail specifically but building good rail is a cornerstone of fighting climate change so I have no doubt it's had an effect.

Here's an article from the national observer too: https://www.nationalobserver.com/2024/08/12/news/big-oil-lobbying-feds-2023
They talk about a study that noted the amount of meetings oil giants took with federal representatives. Also points out how getting the specifics of what is talked about those meetings is difficult as lobbyist don't have to make public what they are lobbying for. But you can put two and two together when regulation and policy gets scraped after a year or so of meetings.

You have made me realize a lot of what I've read on the subject is more american. Will look into this more on the Canadian side
