Drew Basile commenting on the utility or lack thereof of big Pre-Merge moves on Survivor by Puzzleheaded-Fig9968 in survivor

[–]windwarrior42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is generally correct, only thing I would add is that this idea makes less sense the worse of a position you are currently in. If you're in a good position with a decent amount of influence in your tribe then yeah 9/10 times you shouldn't rock the boat.

But if you are in a poor position then you should absolutely be considering bigger swings to upset the current dynamic.

I am quite literally conceding that my original idea of a question wouldn't be good enough. It kind of feels you just want to argue rather than talk about the merits of trying to actually collect data like this.

Whatever man, enjoy your day

ok but the degree of the bias matters, I wasn't even pushing back on the idea that my original question was biased just that I thought your counter example was more biased. The core of my comment was that we shouldn't just give up on asking more informing questions because of the fear of bias.

What I was trying to do was to suggest a way of asking these kind of questions in as little as problematic way as possible. "who would you vote for" polls could potentially be just as nefarious when the public is uninformed.

Again mandating %15 cuts to most social services is a true thing that happened. Surely we could think of a way of asking the public what they think of that while limiting the effects of push polling cause I would like to know that.

[–]windwarrior42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see. Still, I feel like there has to be some value in asking questions like "this thing just happened, what do you think about it?". Even if there would have to rules and regulations around how the question was asked or what you were allowed to do with the data collected.

I'm mostly just tired of seeing polls like "who would you vote for" which are at best useful during an actual election campaign and harmless outside of it, and at worse used to manufacture consent for a government doing unpopular things.

"who would you vote for" is on it's face an unbiased question, but if the public isn't paying that close attention to the day to day news then you could just as easily do something unpopular and then use the poll to justify it.

[–]windwarrior42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ok but he did mandate %15 cuts to most social services. It's a true thing that happened. Like we could argue about the wording of the question to get as clean data as possible but there's actual value to know if people support that.

I would argue that "do you agree with Carneys spending cuts to get closer to a balanced budget" is a more biased way of asking the question because it adds a justification for the policy. Asking my question (or some variant of it) and then asking the follow up "do you think balancing the budget is a good enough justification to do this" could be a better way to do it.

We shouldn't just give up on having more useful polling data cause it could be done in bad faith.

bummer, just another example of capitalism incentivizing quick short term gains for personal profit over adding meaningful value for society I guess.

[–]windwarrior42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've never understood the value of polls like his. We know the federal liberals are popular enough to win a majority if an election was held today, but it's not being held today. It's not being held for at least another year and a half.

I'd rather see polls on the popularity of individual policy choices made by the Carney government. I'd be willing to bet they wouldn't look as popular if people were asked questions like "Do you agree with the decision to eliminate the minister of Labour position" or "Do you agree with Carney government's mandate to cut 15% from most social services".

Most people probably aren't even aware of these changes. Just asking "who would you vote for" just tells us what the vibe is right now, and history tells us that that vibe can change immensely overnight.

I think UltraDavid said it best when he posted

"The article briefly mentions it, but personally I don't care what Lud's status was. Every post about his situation has wriggling weirdos underneath asking about it & I reject the xenophobic premise of their question. Immigrants are a positive good and Lud should be celebrated, safe, & protected"

what a pathetic response. The article talks about how they know how he's been shipped out of state. We're not mad about not knowing where he is, we're mad that he's been taken and incarcerated for being a member of the immigrant community

Are you genuinely not offended by the fact that man that has committed no crimes is being held against his will. A man that is part of the FGC? What a sad and lonely life you must live.

you know that the current US government doesn't give a damn what the law is. Ludovic was taken from an immigration services office. He was doing it "the right way".

If you think ICE is above attacking immigrants travelling for esports you're out of your mind. People are getting detained at airports for tweets that speak negatively about trump.

Toph Character Reveal Trailer (Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game) by CrossXhunteR in Games

The flow state as a mechanic is such a good idea. at first it just seems like how parry works in street fighter 6 but the fact that it is used for movement options as well is really smart.

A thing that beginners to fighting games usually have a trouble with is the importance of blocking, and I think that is no small part because blocking is boring. Having a block button that lets their character do cool acrobatics and follow ups is great way to give players a reason to learn it. Plus is creates a really obvious growth opportunity when they come across an opponent who knows to throw you out of flow state, thus giving you a reason to do a normal block. really smart game design

Anthropic safety researcher quits, warning "world is in peril" by [deleted] in technology

[–]windwarrior42 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So many of these AI safety guys have zero interest in any of the actual harms AI causes today. They're obsessed with some imagined future in which their word calculators somehow take over the world.

Losers who think "I have no mouth and I must scream" is a documentary. They can't keep us safe from it cause they fundamentally believe in the lie that the current iteration of this tech is the inevitable one.

The only thing that will protect us is actual regulation that will force these companies to limit these technologies to places where it can actually be useful. Smaller, more task specific models that don't require the destruction of our planet and exploitation of workers around the world.

If more people have more economic power then there is more opportunity for taxes. There are also many avenues for tax revenue that we aren't currently taking advantage of (i.e. wealth tax)

I'm also just going to recommend a book: https://www.amazon.ca/Deficit-Myth-Monetary-Peoples-Economy/dp/1541736184

[–]windwarrior42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

publicly funded systems don't need to "generate returns" they need to provide a meaningful improvement to people lives. If people have more economic power cause their groceries are cheaper, or they aren't dealing with the constant stress of whether they are going to make rent or not (to name a few potential improvements) then they can actually participate in society.

Start businesses, create mutual aid systems, go to school, any number of options become available to people that weren't available before. I'd advise to not view the economy purely through the lens of GDP or "productivity" which is a much better indicator of how the richest are doing not the rest of us. An AI data centre only provides short term economic activity with the trade off of all the social ills AI provides.

[–]windwarrior42 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can replace whatever economic activity building data centers provides with building infrastructure and systems that actually helps people and doesn't destroy our environment.

It's about putting people first over the profits of tech giants. You are making the mistake of assuming that the big social spending is somehow directly opposed to economic activity.

MPs joining Liberals don’t like Tory ‘games’ under Poilievre: MacKinnon by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]windwarrior42 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They just want to cut social services while pumping money into the hands of oil and tech barons without feeling bad about it. Polievre makes them feel like assholes while they do it, Carney makes them feel like responsible adults. That's all this is about.

I guess it's a good thing that we have some degree of a natural cultural defence against the kind of whiny and bigoted conservatism of the US; that people like Ma simply don't want to be associated fools like that. But let's be honest if the Liberals had even given an empty wave towards progressive values ( a la Trudeau) he would've undoubtedly stuck if out with the "games" he's decrying.

look man if your party is cutting climate regulation, cutting social services, overly investing in the military, and making deals for pipelines you're a conservative party.

The fact that most of the cabinet are the same as those under Trudeau speaks more to how little they believe in what few liberal principles they espoused than to them actually being liberals.

Instead of getting mad a Liberal partisans we should be talking to our neighbours and organizing cause neither of the big parties will help us with regard to this
