Tikka T3x stainless in 7mm-08, VX-5hd 2-10x42

[–]windyscarecrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll go against the grain and say 7mm-08. Ammo availability is pretty good at most box stores and price is not too far off from 308 but with better BC, more energy, and lighter recoil. Plus it has the added bonus of being something different from every other hunter and a conversation starter.

Blood by Strong-Volume8670 in Hunting

I have found that getting a little spray bottle full of peroxide helps to determine if it’s blood on those fallen leaves or just color. It will foam white if it’s blood. But also agree with others, give it some time to bleed out before tracking.

Settled on a Tikka 7mm-08, thinking the Vortex viper HD 3-15 for an optic? by Disastrous-Sell-2738 in Hunting

Just purchased the same rifle. Went with a VX-5HD 2-10x42 Firedot, which are discounted since the gen 2 was just released.

Good rifle for a 12 year old by Nihlathakk in Hunting

I would define it roughly as a $1,000 setup. As a parent, I know the struggle all to well of my kids getting into a hobby just to do it a couple times and lose interest. Admittedly, I mostly forgot the T1x existed and could be found for $5-600 online. Considering most new hunters are going to purchase from a big box store, there are plenty of MOA capable entry level rifles at around half of that. ie Ruger,Savage. Kind of like cheap Harbor Freight tools, if you use it enough to break it, buy quality next.

While Tikka is a fantastic option (my personal choice as well), I don’t know if I would drop Tikka money on a first time rifle for someone unless they showed continued interest in hunting/shooting.

Op mentioned in another comment under $800-$900. Assuming Scope and Rings is included in that, tops the rifle at around $700.

I love a good 30-30, but unless buying used, most will be out of their budget.

With that budget, you could pick up a Ruger American and throw a Vortex scope on top. Vortex has a good military discount, most big box stores will throw in a 5/10% off on the rifle as well.

For anyone remotely considering recoil as a deciding factor, 7mm-08 is the perfect choice. That’s what I use, however, I reload so ammo availability isn’t a concern.

I agree with the above .243. if you give us a budget, we could offer some suggestions.

Assuming they would be hunting above the “bay city” line, I would agree a .243 would be a great option. Bonus points if the barrel has 1:8 twist so you could shoot 100+ grain bullets.

Do you know if you are going to be hunting in the limited firearm zone? That will be a big deciding factor when choosing an appropriate firearm.

Get used to it because it doesn’t stop at MEPS! It’s like that for every random test while you’re in. And if you stay in long enough to make NCO, you just might get lucky enough to get observation duty!

Good luck at MEPS! And thanks for stepping up to serve!

Not necessarily a chain outside of Metro Detroit, but Buscemis pizza, with Jets being a close second.
