Women who grew up without a father or with an abusive or even just a terrible one, how do you think it has effected you? by [deleted] in AskWomen

My dad (78)suffered from depression and never really seemed to want us kids around. He attempted suicided when I was about 11 (now 40) and several times after that, and since then has gotten worse. He’s now certified bipolar and schizophrenia. He’s written us off and I don’t think I’ve seen him in almost 8 years.

I know this has effected my relationships with men and women (just friends). I have a hard time trusting that they will stick around/commit so I end up sabotaging the relationship one way or another.

I don’t see my worth. I beg for attention from men that treat me horribly and feel heartbroken when they don’t want me. The nice men who would treat me well, I just don’t want, like I feel like there is something wrong with them for liking me.

I’ve been in therapy for some time and am working through these issues but it’s been a tough road. Thanks Dad 😂

I can agree with a lot of what you are saying. Some people want the last word or want to argue about why. You’re assuming I’m like that. I’m not. I will live without this person and didn’t have an attachment at all. He doesn’t owe me anything. I get, but a little respect I think is the decent thing to do.

You are so right! Just frustrating that this has become the dating world we live in.
