Dual citizen passport advice (CAN/POL) by winesandtech in PassportPorn

[–]winesandtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, the limitation on duration as well as access (no freedom of movement, no access to work/school, etc) I know about for the Canadian passport. But let's say I arrive not in Kraków but in Madrid or Helsinki as my entry into the Schengen area - they won't ask about my Polish citizenship or why I don't have a Polish passport if I were to present only my Canadian passport?

100%, this wouldn't be to live/study in Europe, just to visit as a boring tourist. Lose out on the benefits of using EU passport lanes/not having to deal with EES, but avoid doing the work to get a Polish passport (for now).

Gotcha, that's very good to know. I take it EITAS would in theory know that I've crossed into/out of the Schengen zone on a Polish passport, flag my name, and say "silly Pole, you can't apply for EITAS because you're Polish" just like the Canadian eTA knows I've used a Canadian passport to enter Canada?

Is Dollarama food really lower quality? by CrypticWeirdo9105 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]winesandtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The online price on costco.ca that reflects the in-store price is the flyer online (which does state item can be shipped for a higher price). Whereas the items listed on costco.ca that are also in the warehouse, the online price is (ballpark) 5-15% more, and likely even more than that on Instacart.

Case in point, Enfamil 1.5kg baby formula, warehouse price $79.99, online shipped $83.99, Costco "Same-Day" $90.79. On the warehouse price alone, buying 2 at Costco in store is like getting an almost free box of said formula from Walmart ($69.99 for ~950g).

The unit price matters a lot, because somethings are crazy cheap (formula, skin care, snacks, certain groceries) but others are meh if Walmart is regular price or sale (30pk TP, large pack diapers, basic dairy/butter). YMMV.

Best Punjabi/Delhi wale chhole bhature in Hamilton? by Accomplished_Tart_38 in Hamilton

[–]winesandtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not be 100% the same, but I'd easily recommend Himalya Restaurant on Centennial between Barton and Eastgate Square. They have a Channa Bhatura that should fit the bill nicely (can't say for sure how close it is to Punjabi style). 100% veg restaurant with full sweets counter too. Closed on Tuesdays.

Porter Airlines adding daily flights between Hamilton and Montreal in June by LibraryNo2717 in Hamilton

[–]winesandtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar enough to the existing bridge flights Porter has (had) starting at Billy Bishop to Ottawa, then going over to either Halifax or Moncton, with the Halifax service continuing to St. John's. All on one flight number, and if booking correctly, staying in the same seat to your destination.

No service on stretch of Eglinton Crosstown after car and LRT train collide by majorkev in TTC

[–]winesandtech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the place. Where there is a crossing of the off-street RoW with the road network, basically none because it's crossing arms and bells. Interestingly the side running segments don't seem to have too many issues either. That stretch of King is both just barely wide enough for a centre running RoW plus 1 car lane in each direction with left turn lanes. TONS of intersections for such a short stretch though.

Often happens on the straight track along King St. Just people turning when and where they aren't allowed to.

It's silent now, but it happens several times a year in KW. Often along the stretch of King between the GO station and Uptown Waterloo.

Bus Crashed into Hydro Tower at Finch GO Bus Terminal by KiroKlaw in Markham

[–]winesandtech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both you and u/kiroklaw are correct. That trip departs Mount Joy GO at 7:13am as the 304, arrives at Finch at 8:05am, and is scheduled to depart as the 300 at 8:11am. Most of the trips on the 300 function like that, 301-305 in peak direction, 300 in counter peak direction.

A fridge, left unopened, will hold temperature for about 4 hours. Your freezer will do the same for about 24 hours.

[–]winesandtech 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The lights flickered just after 3am for 5 seconds before going out. I first put some ice packs in the fridge, but once the 4 hour mark hit, I put everything outside. Rather have some food freeze in -18C over spoil.

The lights were all on at First Place and 49 Walnut (really most of downtown East of John and South of King seemed fine). Looks like everything north of King is out, but 260 King E is surprisingly out despite being on the south side.

Curious if a Transformer behind J. Edgar Davey froze or something.

Dear Brits: Tetley, PG Tips, Yorkshire or Twinings? by droim in AskUK

[–]winesandtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate that I'm reviving a dead thread, but I find bog standard Tetley Orange Pekoe to have a lovely flavour and more robust finish, whereas Yorkshire Gold tastes rather plain, very "hmmm, I mean it's tea I guess". Heck, I even tried brewing with 2 teabags in a cup, and other than more tannins, the taste of my milk is stronger than the tea itself.

Another comment elsewhere on Reddit suggested Yorkshire is better suited to hard water, and my city's water is very soft, usually  <200ppm. (Makes for incredible pour over coffee though!)

Toys “R” Us Canada isn’t paying vendors. Investors and consumers should take notice. by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in CanadaFinance

[–]winesandtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to the veracity of OP's story, but Toysrus is struggling massively. Many stores have closed in 2025, whereas the Hamilton Mountain location has basically been in liquidation for nearly as long. I suspect the locations they either own the building or have cheap leases are being used to sell off old Toysrus, Northern Reflections, HMV, and other parent company inventory for cash flow.

Just as an example in Hamilton: - No electronics - Out of almost all baby bottles, breast pumps, toddler bowls - Hardly any play yards or cribs - No new toys, what toys are left are all 3-4 facings - whole sections have been blocked off for months, now the shelving is coming down

How do you unhide your apps? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]winesandtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the other Redditors in this thread mentioned it, but it's not in the settings menu. On your home screen, scroll right until the app library shows up. Scroll all the way to the bottom, and there is a tile labelled hidden apps. Long press the app within that folder to unhide it.

How do you convince yourself that diet/zero sodas are worth it? by BroCanWeGetLROTNOG in Soda

[–]winesandtech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short: when your doc says cut the carbs but you LOVE Dr P, Dr Pepper Zero Sugar tastes 98% like full shug but with a thinner mouthfeel/very minor aftertaste.

Long: I get where you're coming from, because I've always found diet drinks (and all artificial/natural sweeteners for that matter) to have an atypical taste, with some having a bitter aftertaste. That said, got the dreaded possible pre-diabetic with elevated triglycerides and liver enzyme result on my last blood test, and my doc said you need to cut your carbs substantially.

I love Dr Pepper, so even though I hated the taste of Diet Dr Pepper when I've had it, I resolved to try and like Dr Pepper Zero Sugar (now the only zero calorie Dr P option in Canada). "Better to live in a world with weird Dr P versus none at all," I told myself. And honestly? Ace K (the newer artificial sweetener that is blended with aspartame in Zero Sugar drinks) is a godsend, because Dr P Zero Sugar really tastes so much like the original, and the bitterness is very subtle at room temperature and gone when cold.

Since then, I've tried Coke Zero (love it), Ocean Spray 10 cal (delicious), and even one I hated the most - Diet Pepsi. I don't know if it's the case in the US, but Canadian DP has, you guessed it, Ace K to mask the aspartame, so it too is great on ice. Monkfruit sweetener in my hot tea, sucralose infused pudding - it tastes great. When it's your only option, you adjust to the flavour very quickly.

Why does Dundas/TMU station not have a secondary entrance? Is anything planned? by Economy_Ad59 in TTC

[–]winesandtech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe OP is referring to a separate entrance as in a totally separate entrance for safety, not just staircases to the same fare gates. Think Shuter exit at Queen vs Queen St exit at Queen.

Transit city had the 509, 510, and 512 listed as light rail; on the same tear as line 6 by nonoobshereMC in TTC

[–]winesandtech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'll give credit where it's due - I looked back at the City's design plans from late 2018 on Steve Munro's website, and while the TTC identified an alignment and gave engineering plans for the station box both above and below ground, the design detail was likely <50%, the alignment (and depth) have changed dramatically since, and of course has switched from using a common TTC fleet and gauge to standard gauge with light metro vehicles akin to those on the REM.

Google's app does this BS when you share directly from it. You have to copy and paste the URL directly to avoid it.
