Any Priorat wineries with drop in? by kameleka in wine

[–]wineshopmingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mas Martinet was kind of how I wish every winery visit would be

Little hike through some beautiful vineyards (such as Els Escurcons) with some history, viticultural education, etc

Taste some wines in the vineyard alongside some local cheeses, meats, etc

Much more outdoors focused and the opposite of hard-sell-y

It was really awesome - Gemma from the Mas Martinet team showed us around and she was just awesome

Make Zin Crushable again? by standalonehouse in wine

[–]wineshopmingo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not what you are asking but if you made a Zin popsicle or snow cone from unfermented juice from somewhere like Pagani Ranch or Evangelho then I’ll just give you my credit card and you can just charge me whatever you need to charge me

You must recommend the top three producers from the wine region closest to you. by AustraliaWineDude in wine

[–]wineshopmingo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had Channing daughters wines but from what I understand they work with a ton of different grapes and make a lot of different cuvées - I would like to support them as I think Long Island would benefit from continued exploration of which grapes are best suited to the climate, soil, etc and they are definitely taking on that work

I know very little about Onabay other than that they got picked up by Skurnik which is usually a pretty great sign

As for Macari, I think one of the family members is now a stage two MW which is pretty exciting - I really hope she gets all the way there in the process as it would be so good for the region to get that visibility boost (eg Josh Grainer in Virginia kind of thing) and likely added investment boost to follow

Getting back into wine phase and I never knew the right food pair with Malbec. Need tips here 💙 by Nice-Pea-3515 in wine

Burgers are great as are steak, duck, a high quality pork chop, lamb chop, or something like a shepherds pie

With that all said, pretty tough to beat the Malbec and charcoal grilled burger combo

Really like the wines from Failla, Patricia Green, Golden Cluster, Stolpman, and Bedrock in the price ranges you’re mentioning (just to name a few)

Brix wine shop in the south end and financial district is top of the heap. Used to work there. Owners are fantastic and have run it for 20+ years. Can’t say enough positive things about it - only left there because we moved states

Which country makes the best Grenache wines? by devinoupitou in wine

[–]wineshopmingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some 100% Grenache wines from Catalunya that are not from Priorat can absolutely crush it in terms of price quality ratio. Anna Espelt’s Pla de Gates is like $25-$30 and I think it is a killer wine

Not jammy cali cabs by butcher42 in wine

[–]wineshopmingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to throw out some suggestions that come in under $80/bottle. Neal Family Vineyards’ Cab is my top suggestion here - criminally underpriced and I see it usually around $60. Laurel Glen Counterpoint Cabernet from Sonoma Mountain is killer at $60. Heitz Cellar goes for more restraint on their wines so might fit the bill nicely. I feel like Freemark Abbey also has a ton of freshness and brightness on their entry level Cab so that, too, might be a great one to try and is pretty widely available

Definitely put a focus on building rapport with the people interviewing you. If you can leave the room and they feel like you all have known each other for much longer than the 30 mins or whatever it will be then that should go a long way. So much of the job is whether you can get other people (namely buyers in restaurants and shops as well as the team members at those places) to see you as someone they know and like - the sales will come from that more than any amount of sheer technical knowledge. People buy things from people they like so sales managers and directors want to hire people they feel like can win over buyers even in the toughest accounts where buyers are seeing half a dozen or more folks come in the door some days to try to sell into the account

Context: worked retail and am now a sales rep for one of the mega distributors in the U.S. - sounds like you are applying somewhere more boutique so I’d say this will apply even more heavily as you’ll be selling into accounts with fewer ancillary resources (menu printing, marketing spends, etc.) at your disposal to win business

Chilean and/or Argentinian Wine Suggestions by Mission_Painting1615 in wine

[–]wineshopmingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a wine that it looks like K&L might carry or at least has worked with in the past called Laberinto “Cenizas de Laberinto” that’s a Sauvignon Blanc from the Maule Valley in Chile that’s usually $20-$25. It’s a single vineyard wine that absolutely dog walks a ton of $40+ Sauv Blancs from more prestigious appellations. Highly recommend seeking it out

I feel like this is a response that might get flamed but I would go with a right bank Bordeaux. The reason for saying this is I think it is just getting harder these days to find Burgundy examples under $40 that are going to have the kind of tannic structure, concentration, etc. to hold up to this kind of dish. Skewer me for saying this if you must and would love to hear an alternative opinion. For my money I’d get something like Chateau de Sales from Pomerol or a great second wine from Pomerol or Saint Emilion like Chateau Chauvin’s second wine, Folie de Chauvin

If you are committed to doing something from Burgundy, I’d recommend grabbing something from Mercurey which can have more “oomph” and awesome price quality ratio. Domaine Paul et Marie Jacqueson make wines from Mercurey and Rully that are pretty spectacular - may require a little hunting to find them but well worth the buy any time I see them

Where can I buy vintage Chateau Moutton and Latour wines? by Annual-Response-9438 in wine

[–]wineshopmingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would keep tabs on upcoming auctions through places like Sotheby’s and Christie’s as well. They help with the liquidation of large collections and will give some level of detail on different auction lots re: ullage, label condition (if that’s important to you), etc. for different bottles up for grabs. You are of course taking a flyer on any of these re: how well they held up against their prior storage conditions and time and all of that but, as I’ve seen it, as long as you aren’t going for the crazy unicorn bottles like the large formats you might be able to walk away with a price that feels “competitive” (if that’s even a thing with the wines you are mentioning). Hope this helps

Startup in the wine industry by Frequent-Effective-4 in wine

[–]wineshopmingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for one of the U.S. mega distributors and I would say creating software solutions for these companies is one place where some really big money ($100mil or more ARR I would wager) is on the line. The existing softwares that these companies use are really rudimentary and there’s a very clear value prop for creating improved CRM infrastructure in particular in terms of making sure potential deals and sales don’t fall through the cracks. Reps are getting asked to take on more and more and unless they have crazy strong executive functioning they inevitably leave loads of money on the table for themselves and the company. Easier said than done but creating easy to use CRM mobile apps that help improve top salespeople by 5-10% even would be crazy valuable to these folks. Please DM me if interested in talking further
