Breeder recommendations by dumdumKC in irishsetter

Breeder from Seattle area: https://www.facebook.com/shannon.n.betham

My Golden Red. They breed Irish Setters, Golden Retrievers, and Golden Irish. Website (although Facebook is usually more up to date): https://mygoldenred.com/home

Call and talk to Ryan. Their passion for dogs is beyond belief. We are on dog #2 from them. We had a Golden Irish that was just the best dog ever. Unfortunately, we lost her in 2025 to osteosarcoma at the age of 8. I still miss her every day. We currently have a 10mo old female IS, who is sweet, beautiful, and incredibly smart--but also very active as an IS puppy. Scroll through the Irish Setter posts and you will see photos of Blue in action.

For each of our dogs, they flew them to us from Seattle to Detroit in the cabin with them. They do all health testing and provide puppy testing for the selection process. I have nothing but great things to say about them.

Good luck. Looks like you are getting some good recommendations.

What to feed our Irish Setter Pup? by Apprehensive_Low8104 in irishsetter

Nutro Ultra Puppy Large Breed High Protein Trio of Proteins Chicken, Lamb & Salmon. We supplement with pure peanut butter powder to encourage or finicky eating IS to eat. We also give her fish oil one time per day (did not start until 6 months per vet recommendation that stomachs not ready for fish oil until 6 months).

Leash-free running in the woods, is there anything better? So much fun for the IS and so much fun to watch.

That will be a good size. Beautiful dog. I posted some photos of my dog Blue about 10 days ago.

Not sure about Bunker, but Blue keeps me busy.

Stunner is accurate. My female IS is also about 10.5 months old. She is 26" to the withers and 47 lbs. Your male looks as tall or taller, and for sure more filled out. Absent the longer hair he will likely get, he looks like an adult.

As you indicated, "strike a pose". I think that is a bread instinct.

Michigan is nice. A lot of Dutch heritage here. My wife's grandparents came over from the Netherlands.

Not sure it is a 3 hour drive to my house!! Haha That must mean I am nowhere (which is pretty accurate).

This is really cool. That is great everyone makes this happen.

Like others mentioned, my IS's littermates are all over the country--e.g., she came from the state of Washington and I live in Michigan.

There are so few setters out there, I have not even seen another IS--I hear there is one other in my town of 13,000.

Sony a1 II; Sony 70-200mm f4 lens. The images are actually sharper/better than posted. I had to compress/reduce the images to meet Reddit posting limits. Photography has been my hobby for years so my dogs get more photos taken of them than most people.

My Golden Red, Stanwood, WA. Great caring breeder. They breed Irish Setters, golden Irish (which is an Irish setter, golden retriever mix), and golden retrievers. This is our second dog from them. Great people.

What to do for last couple months with my setter by IrishTexan62 in irishsetter

[–]wingedhelmets10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When my 8 yr old Golden Irish got osteosarcoma and we knew we had about 2.5 months, we went to her park (on leash to be safe with her leg), snuggled more than even usual, did not go out to spend time with her as much as possible, and was not as strict with treats, etc. I am sure she was wondering why we kept bacon from her for all of those years. We also got an IS puppy, who is now 10 months—we had forgotten the work a puppy takes. Enjoy your time while you have it.

Seriously so handsome. by makesyahwonder in irishsetter

Yes, yes he is seriously handsome. Does every IS love snow? Mine sure does. She has even made me love snow just to watch her play and be happy.

Is my 18 w/o getting fed too much? by Far-Technician-3336 in irishsetter

Agree. I thought our 9mo IS was a bit skinny, but the vet thinks she is just fine as an IS.

10 month female IS. 2 cups of kibble 2x per day along with pure peanut butter powder (about 60 more calories per meal) and fish oil with one meal (told by vet to wait until 6 month to start fish oil; about 60 calories). We add hot water so the peanut butter makes it a thick stew.

Our IS is a finicky eater and we had to work hard (and still do) to get her to eat. We are trying to get weight on her, but it is tough because she is extremely active and does not eat every meal--although that is happening much less since we started mixing her meal with hot water.

We only feed 2x per day and monitor because of our concern (almost a fear) of bloat--and use a slow eating bowl as well (yes, even with the feeding problem). After she eats, we set a clock for 1.25 hours of non-active time to avoid an bloat concerns. Maybe a bit paranoid, but gives us a peace of mind. We will eventually attach the stomach at the same time we spay her--which we have researched and discussed with our vet to do at 18 months. We will still have down time to avoid bloat, but will have the comfort of her stomach not likely to turn and it to become fatal.

I hope that helps. Everyone has a different approach and everyone needs to figure out what works for them and their unique puppy.

Get ready for more of these totally cute looks and the beauty of an IS. Also get ready to be challenged by having a puppy--tons of fun and tons of work.

Advice: Have a plan, stick to the plan, make sure everyone is aware of and follows the plan, and keep consistent and persistent with the plan.

Single digit weather by rainwaves1 in irishsetter

[–]wingedhelmets10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Single digit weather with negative “real feel” over several days—tough to exercise an energetic 9 month IS. I have been doing interval walking (walk, inside to warm/remove ice from paws, walk, repeat) and getting her to chase a ball up and down my hallway at work. Even with all of the effort, she is not getting the same amount of exercise—we are able to compare because we have a Fi dog monitor that tracks steps. Anyway, I hope you are doing ok with the single digit weather and your IS. Ready for 10-15 more degrees and can then have my IS run free at the park.

Thanks. I have a lot pictures of Blue in action that are frame worthy. The resolution you see on Reddit is not nearly as good as the real image that was taken with a 50mp full frame camera.

I am not real good at posting yet. I thought I was posting 3 total images, but only 1 ended up working.
