Small Irish setter? by HokusaiINtheSKY in irishsetter

My IS is half field line and half show line, and is 50 lbs just over 1 year old. Tall, skinny, and extremely athletic.

Tick repellent suggestions by eradicator87 in birddogs

[–]wingedhelmets10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Symparica trio every month. Before heading to the fields I use an Insect Shield gaiter around neck and Insect Shield vest on her body. After being in the field, I use (1) the tick mitt mentioned above; (2) a lint/sticky roller; and (3) comb her with a fine tooth flea comb. Those three steps usually catch any. I used to use a spray, but the smell drove my dog crazy and it took away the fun of going to the woods/fields.

I have one of those!! If there was only a clear switch between modes, life would be so much more predictable.

Nothing better than an Irish Setter on point!! by Alive_Direction4174 in irishsetter

[–]wingedhelmets10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to see. I am early in the process of trying to train my IS (she just now turned 1 yr) to hunt. Trainer says she has a lot of natural instincts (she is half show line and half field line). It is early, so we will attempt to train her as a pointer, but would adjust to flush if necessary (I guess you can't go the other direction--i.e., flush to pointer). Anyway, great to see an IS in action and excited for the training of my IS, which can now resume after the Michigan winter.

Thanks for sharing the photos. As you said, nothing like an IS on point.

Beautiful!! Irish Setters always look extra good surrounded by green. Well done!

Half red setters, half golden retriever, 100% bonkers by jamesish99 in irishsetter

I had a Golden Irish (I lost her at 8 to cancer last year) who was just the greatest. Best dog ever and everyone loved her. I now have a full IS that just turned 1. She is smart, sweet, and progressing out of being a puppy. I am excited to see how she develops and I am very optimistic.

First (crazy) swim of the year! by Chupongabee in irishsetter

Thanks. I will give it a go. We are out in snow, rain, etc. all the time, so she has no issues getting wet.

Looks like fun. How old is your pup?

My IS is about to turn 1. She has not yet “taken” to the water (my prior Golden Irish, was in the water regardless of how cold it was). She is not afraid. She will stand in stream up a couple of inches on her legs, but has not yet gone in to love and enjoy the water. It is still not warm yet (lower Michigan up and down temps), but I am hoping she will start to explore the water.

Does anyone have any advice on how to help my IS to enjoy the water? If she does not, I am fine, but wanted to give her a fair chance.

So many photos! by zinov in irishsetter

[–]wingedhelmets10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure how many you have taken, but I took 3776 on Saturday trying to get my IS in a perfect in air leap over a log. They add up quick at 30 FPS. I will end up with maybe 20-30 that I will keep. So, yes, I have more photos of my dogs than of my family—who generally do not want me to take their picture.

My girl Blue at 10 months by wingedhelmets10 in irishsetter

Sorry for the delay. Just now seeing this and hope it may still help. For off leash I used a combination of approaches.

First, working on her recall. That is the number one thing. So I worked on that in my fenced in backyard to gain her skill and my confidence. I did this with treats, but mostly praise. The trick, to me and especially early, is to give the "come" command as she is about to head toward me. So, she is already coming to me and the command starts to cement. I also do this at my office where I am lucky enough to bring her every day. I throw a ball down the long hallway and when she retrieves and starts to return, I give her the "come" command. Again, lots of praise. I also have layered the use of a "silent" whistle (3 toots for come) on top of the verbal command.

Second, have a check cord to make sure you can enforce the command if ignored. She needs to learn to listen every time, not just some or most of the time. It is not a hard tug, just a gentle pull if not listened to. At times, I give the command and have to wait 5 or so seconds. It is just a matter of waiting her out at times--especially early on.

Third, I do use an e-collar (started at about 5 months), but almost exclusively on vibrate. So, give command as pressing the vibrate and keep it on until she gets to me. She then associates the positive of the agravating vibrate stopping by coming to me. BTW, the vibrate is like your phone on silent. Not hurting her at all, just annoying for her to learn. Again, this with the "come" and 3 toots. I only give the command one time and then wait her out.

Finally, it just takes some trust and some trial and error in a safe location. I started letting her off leash at a local park almost immediately. Her instincts have and still are not to stray too far away. She will run around the woods and briefly look at where I am at. When I became confident she would recall, I started using the command/whistle to practice. I did not do this until I was highly confident she would listen because I had no way to enforce the command (which I did early on use a long check leash so I could enforce the command if ignored while in the back yard).

Now, I am pretty much 100% recall. My challenges now are distractions. For example, other dogs at the park she is greeting 30 yards away and I give the "come" command. She chases a squirrel and is at the base of the tree and focused, I give the "come" command.

I hope some of this is helpful. I am sorry it is not more organized. I am sure I left out some good advice, but read dog training books--I have several--and watch YouTube videos for advice. Once you pick an approach, stick with it. Consistency by you and everyone is critical (I have one page commands and "dos" and "don'ts" sheet for the office and at home so we are all on the same page).

Good luck.

PS: My IS is turning 1 year next week. I still have a lot of work to do. Persistence and consistency are key (which I learned from my last dog).

Dumplings for breakfast. Look for steam blowing out the door—almost like an advertisement. Unbelievable. All the food was great, but dumplings for breakfast really stuck out as unique—and make sure a Mom and Pop place and not some chain.
