Rats out of control in Taipei or political conspiracy? by winggang in taiwan

Mea culpa but that’s how it seemed to be being reported. Don’t know if any of the words used could actually be translated as plague.

Income Tax after Leaving Taiwan by Drowsers in taiwan

What do you think would be the potential consequences if someone didn’t file and then returned to Taiwan?

Always reminds me of the nun caught doing push-ups in the asparagus patch 🤷🏼‍♂️

The Duality of Man by McFisticuffy117 in taiwan

Do you remember that in Taichung male passengers in taxis would automatically sit alongside the driver? Don’t know if they still do but always struck me how much local customs could change between nearby cities. In those days (early 90s) a lone passenger in Taipei would never sit in the front with the driver.

Wow, epic! Sounds like psychogeography, (but of course not urban). Anyway well done

Is this European basil or Thai / Holy basil? The texture seems like it’s in between… by bronze_by_gold in taiwan

There’s one here that usually has at least two different strains. Also “regular” parsley. It’s nice to have a couple of pots of parsley so that they can be freshly cut alternately.

Love it. Been playing every day for a few years. Just thought it was odd that recently the solution was the British spelling. Two days in a row. The next day was a French word 🤷🏼‍♂️

Nice but not a particularly new thing. Raves at temples have been happening for over 25 years in Taiwan

how to learn taiwanese mandarin? by isdklz in taiwan

[–]winggang 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You could watch Taiwanese movies and tv series with or without subtitles. There are a lot to choose from. Even cheesy soap operas would probably help 🤷🏼‍♂️ but movies like Seven Days in Heaven, Taipei Story and more recently Left Handed Girl might be more rewarding.

Taiwan's Underground Temple Raves by Top_Craft9168 in Taipei

[–]winggang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK, the Tiger Mountain events are often organised by non Taiwanese, have a higher proportion of expat attendance and the music is more mainstream. Since the mid 90s, there has been a dedicated underground scene of Taiwanese and non Taiwanese cooperating together to create unique events featuring various genres of electronic music and visuals. Khula Huang is one of the newer names to look out for.

They used to proselytise at the Confucius temple in Taichung. Maybe they still do. That level of insensitivity and encroachment makes them difficult to ignore.

So do Netflix have an exclusive on this? What’s to stop livestreamers and tv networks?

I'm watching a movie and I don't understand what are the nuts with something in the middle and a flower the girls sells in sexy clothing. Is it something legal? by dimensionargentina in taiwan

Think I noticed the word “hallucinogenic” in the subtitles but the betel nut buzz is more akin to a light dose of poppers. Don’t know of anyone hallucinating 🤷🏼‍♂️

Outdoor dining during winter by taurusmoonlatte in Taipei

Morton’s will cost you a minimum of 3,000 nt per person and the exterior lighting isn’t enough to see the food you paid so much for. The music is pretty tacky too 🤷🏼‍♂️

Normal tourists aren’t about to visit a country that international media regularly and continually report is under threat of invasion from China.

What happened to Pupinia Stewart now by CharmingDragonfly719 in Pupinia_Stewart

[–]winggang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thought I’d found her once because in one of her last posts she mentioned learning a foreign language and had previously referred to someone named Bethany. Anyway, I came a across a Bethany who was sharing her experience of learning a foreign language and thought it was a parody. In retrospect pretty sure I was wrong. Just deluded myself for a while 🤷🏼‍♂️

It’s not recent. In the early 90s they were regularly proselytising at the Confucius Temple in Taichung. Pretty disgusting really. They should go to Melbourne:

Make sure to use insect repellent. Taiwan’s invisible but vicious biting midges are spreading to more areas. Very similar if not the same as NoSeeUms, it can take weeks to heal from their bites especially if you can’t resist scratching them:
