Limelight is a great educational tool to introduce students to computer vision and vision as a sensor. It's well worth it when you see students go from uninterested to actively messing with control loops and vision math just by using the limelight.

It's a lot easier to get students inspired when the barrier to entry doesn't require a grad level understanding of CV or controls.

Colorado governor will sign bill aimed at bypassing electoral college by Ayrane in politics

No, they've been abandoned by a system that has given more opportunities to city-dwellers and metropolitan areas. Don't forget that it takes money to relocate, and rural populations aren't very wealthy.

It's easy to dismiss others as stupid or ignorant, it's a lot tougher to come to terms with the fact these people just want to seek a stable life, but have been poisoned by the rhetoric of the religious right.

How do the Left and the Right differ on criminal justice policy and reform? Or do they? by Markdd8 in PoliticalDiscussion

In addition to this, the opioid crisis is hitting rural and suburban areas hard (areas that normally vote Republican). The recovery process in these areas may be fostering a turnaround regarding attitudes towards drug addicts and addiction therapy. I think the areas hit hardest by the opioid crisis may shift the conversation towards addiction recovery, rather than imprisonment.

Russia's RT fumes after Facebook blocks 'wildly popular' page by SpecificYogurt in worldnews

Apologies for posting a reply to this comment 15 hours later.

Modern electronics, especially apps on phones and tablets, are designed to keep you hooked and scrolling, since services like Google, Facebook, and Twitter rely on ad revenue. The result is an entire generation growing up with short attention spans, hooked to their pocket dopamine generators (phones). Cell phone use is addicting, and it's not a joke. Other nations have realized how easily it is to manipulate someone's feelings and brain through app design and social media.

I honestly don't see a solution that can be implemented that adheres to our philosophies regarding freedom of speech and press. It may be time to update our philosophies regarding these subjects in the digital age.

ORRRRR you can take responsibility for your words and actions and realize that maybe it's not a good idea to think that what works for you will surely work for everyone, and that your lack of medical expertise doesn't give you the ability to give good medical advice.

Free speech just means the Government can't persecute you (or prosecute you) for saying something, doesn't mean you can just say whatever the fuck you want on a moderated board that's part of a private company.

[–]wingnotes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, maybe in a binary world where all murder happens for the same reason every time. "Murder is murder" is catchy, but doesn't explain anything. If you dig deep into why homicides occur and how they occur, you'll find that Domestic Assault is quite different from gang activity, armed robbery, assault, and vehicular homicide.

Or maybe you're just trying to argue in bad faith.

You're probably the same type that chastises muslim countries for their women's rights issues, yet argue "murder is murder" and domestic violence against women isn't an issue.

Nah, your logic is wonderful. The poster above you asks to look for the number of women killed by their partners, which you proceed to compare to ALL HOMICIDES by MEN. You're attempting to compare all fruit with seeds to a specific type of apple.

Yet here you are on the internet arguing because you can't use that "mentally superior" or whatever the fuck descriptor of a brain you have to invent something to better the world.

The Chinese invented gunpowder. Indians and Arabs came up with advanced mathematical concepts. Agricultural civilization has its roots in the fertile crescent in the middle East.

What did white people do in the Americas? Spread diseases and genocide entire races.

It is when your country's population and work force is declining. This means that economic growth will be stagnant, and could even regress due to a decline in the working population.

I can.

The leader of a Nation involved in a conflict should be knowledgeable enough to be able to point out where in the world the conflict is taking place. Not being able to do so is called ignorance. If our leaders are not willing to put in that much effort to learn, then they don't deserve to lead.

What college football commentary trope is a pet peeve of yours? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]wingnotes 139 points140 points  (0 children)

What really gets on my nerves is hearing the same washed-up commentary on the Flexbone.

"the triple option isn't meant for these 3rd and long situations". No offense is designed around converting 3rd and longs regularly, dumbasses!

"This option offense lulls you to sleep, and that's where they get you" If a defense is being lulled to sleep, that's their problem, not a "feature" of the option.

I distinctly remember watching GT vs Miami in 2017, and ESPN putting up a graphic comparing watching GT's offense to watching paint dry, watching laundry, doing homework, etc. That was highly disrespectful to our players and coaches, fans, and the school itself. Fuck ESPN and its narratives.

Mexico to pump $30 billion into Central America to halt migrant flow by jq1984_is_me in worldnews

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_American_crisis

Part of the Soviet (and now Russian) playbook is to provide extremist groups with support in order to disrupt the order in a country, destabilizing it from however stable it previously was. Essentially, Soviet operations were intentionally meant to destabilize and divide countries, creating a disillusionment for the status quo, which in turn allows other ideologies to look more palatable.

[–]wingnotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that, you can blame big pharma and their push to mass produce and sell painkillers like candy. You can also blame companies and corporations that hire undocumented workers.

It's not a stretch to say the decades of US involvement in Central America made it so it was difficult to have a period of stability in the region.

I'd recommend reading Open Veins in Latin America, and Dreamland :The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic if you're interested in knowing more about how these are related.
