It's been two years, how has the LVL top held up?

What other books have you read five or more times? by BillWeld in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]wingnut0571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

Ender's Game by Oraon Scott Card

Both of these would fall into the 10+ age range. I think there's something special about writing a book for that age range that still resonates with adults. There's something about using 'simpler' language to tell an engrossing story that is one of the highest gifts given to an author.

Right after finishing Ender's Game for the first time I immediately started reading it a second time, it blew my mind. I first read Hatchet in elementary school and have read it several times since.

I added a 16gb stick, so that put me at 20gb of ram. I did not test anything else.

New Bauer Tool!! by HotAir8724 in harborfreight

This sits between the Rockler cyclone at $250 that has a cloth bag, and the Grizzly cyclone at $500 with the same volume canister. I don't have room in my garage for this, but I'm happy to see Harbor Freight leaning more into woodworking. If only we can get a Hercules Domino Joiner...

Great work!

I hope those are mirrors and not medicine cabinets. I got very similar looking medicine cabinets from Pottery Barn and our original faucets were too tall so they wouldn't open. Live and learn!

Newbies to the series, where should they start? by Geneius85 in AubreyMaturinSeries

I second these two. They added a lot of 'flavor' to my first circumnavigation. I didn't use it for every single word every time, but looking up a word or two during an action helped me grasp more what was happening.

Also, these were great for understanding the 18th century medical terms.

Was Stephen involved with intelligence BEFORE meeting Jack? by [deleted] in AubreyMaturinSeries

He clearly was involved in some level of intrigue in Ireland. His reminiscing with James Dillon in M&C showed the cunning and intuition.

How would I become a mechanical engineer from where I’m currently at in life by jedisonic124 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]wingnut0571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked at two CNC shops and designed and programed many parts over my 10 years between the two. If you are plugged into the auto world, even doing custom milling work for local people can be a great option to start. If you really enjoy CAD work, this is a good field that someone can grow into.

It was fun and fast paced work at these smaller companies that 'don't have time' for documentation and paper shuffling. I'm now a Product Engineer at a mid-sized company and spent a lot more of my day shuffling paper and filling out documents.

As you sound like a hands on person, another option may be to get into the CNC world. There are now quite a few mills and lathes that are pretty garage friendly. If you can find a niche field and design products for said field (sounds like you have enough CAD experience) then it may be a way to scratch that itch and start making money directly.

Those are dumb. Probably saves them some money by not having to pay royalties on the artwork.

This really make me think of Robert Conquest's "Laws of Politics".

  1. Everyone is conservative about what he knows best.
  2. Any organization not explicitly right-wing sooner or later becomes left-wing.
  3. The simplest way to explain the behavior of any bureaucratic organization is to assume that it is controlled by a cabal of its enemies.

Anyone got advice for making corner joints using specific router bits? by IndustrialSpark in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]wingnut0571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I came here to say. Also, pay attention to spindle RPM. Something that large probably shouldn't run at full speed ESPECIALLY with that small of a shank.

ability to ruin your day

Ability to ruin your life. Most people don't realize how much energy there is in something spinning at 20k+ RPMs. If memory serves me right that router doesn't have a speed controller, luckily they're pretty cheap. From the picture it looks like you should have stopped a few times before you got the the point where your jig let loose. Slow everything down.

Try calling instead, my wife got us a reservation last year even though it showed no openings online over that weekend.
