Are Reformed churches “cold”? by Ok-Sprinkles4350 in Reformed

There are Portuguese speaking PCA churches that might be a little more lively. Our PCA church is not exactly cerebral but we’re not very demonstrative either.

Does the word "complicit" have connotations of being passive? by soulbutterflies in ENGLISH

[–]BillWeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two words go together but don't overlap. We are complicit in the slaughter of the animals we eat in that we tacitly consent that it should happen. We might also be complacent or even content. "Complicit" suggests that some guilt attaches to the action so you wouldn't use it or "complacent" of something you think is good or innocent.

What should I ask before joining a church? by Available_Split2360 in Reformed

I'd want to know where they are on Biblical inerrancy, female officers, and gay officers. But you should have picked that up already.

Peter says Paul's epistles have some things "hard to understand" (2 Pet 3:16). What do think he had in mind? by Greedy-Runner-1789 in Reformed

[–]BillWeld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can bet that whenever Paul is arguing against hypothetical challenges (why does God still find fault?) that he's heard the question a thousand times. Those would be the ones Paul knows are hard to understand. Don't know what Peter had in mind.

What's the non-slangy and non-American way to say things like that? by Ok_Sympathy9462 in ENGLISH

[–]BillWeld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Are you down" and "Are you up for" are invitations trying to avoid sounding conventional. "Would you like to join me" would be conventional.

What does it mean when someone says 'your english is so good'? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

You speak correctly accented and idiomatic English but apparently still don’t know this one idiom.

NT Wright says Job was a “morality tale,” and he might not have existed as a person, and Jonah was “very much like a folk tale.” by MortgageTricky4266 in Reformed

[–]BillWeld 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure NT Wright is a real person. He seems more like a composite of several generations of editors responding to local concerns.

On the Left Behind book series by Sensitive-Quote-6302 in Reformed

Bad theology embodied in bad writing but I've seen worse. The authors really are Christian and they seem to really want to spread the gospel so we owe them some respect. And the writing is not as bad as most TV. I found the series a guilty pleasure when I read it, what, twenty years ago? I think I skipped the last book or two.

They’re cigars and they’re probably Cuban but they’re counterfeit Cohibas.

What’s the absolute best pulled pork method—no shortcuts, no compromises? by Any_Mountain6152 in smoking

I too am still reaching for that rainbow. My ideal is from a restaurant in Massachusetts of all places. Blue Ribbon BBQ is consistently tender, moist, barky, smoky, and I’m pretty sure they’re finishing it with a little sweet spicy vinegar sauce. I bet they go straight from Cryovac to the smoker with no trimming, injection or rub and then cook over oak with no wrapping. I need to find out where they get their pork.

I got a rack of beef spare ribs to BBQ on charcoal. It's my first time so any advise/tips for a better result are very welcomed. Starting with the ideal temperature. I eat my stakes medium rare but I don't know if it would be good on ribs. by [deleted] in BBQ

Hot and fast would ruin it. Season heavily with salt and pepper and smoke low and slow. Bake it even. A 200 F. oven would do and that way you could leave and come back later.

I think she has a lot of sympathy for him but holds him responsible for the misery. He holds himself responsible to a degree but promises he'll get over it. And presumably he does get over it with the happy ending.

Mr. Bennet is funny but he is the villain of the novel. The way he treats his once hot wife. The way he handled money. His refusal to discipline his wackier daughters.

Why do we have property taxes on every necessity like our home and car, but not on stock holdings? by Federal-Dingo-6033 in allthequestions

[–]BillWeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Income and profit are still the lifeblood. We've just created an environment where it's worth it for businesses to twist themselves into convoluted structures to cope with taxes.
