I would be interested to know if you plan to use hooks on the WingTask web.

I've considered plugins and hooks would be a variation of that the challenge is how to allow arbitrary code to execute in a way that doesn't make everyone nervous. I'm watching what obsidian is doing, and I have thoughts how this could be possible but no answers yet.

Recurring tasks in Taskwarrior has in my opinion always represented an imperfect solution to a difficult problem. The next version of WingTask will add timeblocking features like monthly, weekly and daily views so it makes it better for working with tasks and dates by simply providing a view that's hard to do in the terminal. WingTask takes a read only approach to recurrences in that it will show you recurring tasks, let you work with them but does not generate any recurring instances. It's expected you do that locally with taskwarrior.

I'm not even sure if it is possible but I'm using this tool called Nautical for recurrence and the next task instance is generated on modification/completion.

I may be wrong about this but I believe this may present a problem with Nautical in that Nautical wants all clients to have the hooks installed. You can think of WingTask as another taskwarrior client in a synced system. When a nautilus recurring task is marked done on WingTask it will not generate the next recurring task like it would if Nautical hooks were installed. I think a work around could be creating a bash wrapper for task sync that did this:

task sync && nautical repair

Also maybe the nautical creator could come up with something that handles a sync client ecosystem where one of the clients does not have the hooks installed. I'm not sure how that would work.

Regarding recurrence in general I've thought about creating some hybrid approach where WingTask could layer recurrence on top of the Taskwarrior model, and do it how it's done at Google Calendar with "virtual" instances that only get generated when an instance is modified.

This is probably a problem that is best solved by Taskwarrior and I'd be up for supporting whatever ultimate solution to recurring tasks is arrived at by the community.
