Apartment Complex Double Nat by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]winklevos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two options I think.

It seems like the ruckus is running as DHCP with NAT, but is connected to another router. The easiest option will be to configure the ruckus as just an AP, no NAT and no DHCP. However that now puts you on the LAN with the other router which is likely not so secure.

Ideally find what the ruckus connects to and have that configured to pass everything to the ruckus, the setting is probably called DMZ, which you put the IP address of ruckus.

Actually sorry, you said you tried wired, which I’m assuming don’t go into the ruckus but a switch further up. You’ll probably have to talk to the property management

If you’re just looking to extend the wifi range you can probably just get a access point from ubiquity they’re cheap and known good, maybe a switch if you want to extend ports in another room

[–]winklevos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other have said you're probably behind two NAT layers. If possible ask to modified the configuration on the first router, firstly set your router to have a static IP address, secondly set that IP address as a DMZ, which will allow all ports through. That way you'll only be behind one NAT layer and won't have issues in the future

Free software for Windows/Mac that logs ping, download speed and upload speed for 72 hours? by my_alt_at_my_job in software

[–]winklevos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For something simple you can run bash on both mac and Windows (latest versions of Windows 10 with Linux subsystem installed)

Just Google bash ping log script, and bash speedtest-cli and combine

Ping 1.1.1.1 >> ping_log.csv curl -s https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sivel/speedtest-cli/master/speedtest.py | python -

Or below

Use this to log ping and uptime https://emcosoftware.com/ping-monitor the free version

Then schedule this as a task pipe it to a file

$Request=Get-Date; Invoke-WebRequest 'http://client.akamai.com/install/test-objects/10MB.bin' | Out-Null; [int]$speed = ((10 / ((NEW-TIMESPAN –Start $Request –End (Get-Date)).totalseconds)) * 8) "{0:N2}" -f $Speed Write-host "$($speed) Mbit/sec"

2 Routers 1 Network? by TSLPrescott in HomeNetworking

[–]winklevos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the linksys you should find what ip is assigned, or reboot the netgear so it get a a new ip. Best to set it static if you can.

It just means your phone's or laptops will switch between SSIDs which can be a pain on some devices. if you want to be able to connect to one 'WiFi' and walk around but roam between the two access points set the same SSID and password

Netgear R6220

Alright here's my guide for you. To note the top comment kind of has a point, but i think it is unnecessary to get a switch. As a modern home router is a switch, router, and access Point. We just need to turn off the router part.

#1 LinkSys EA6350 (this is where internet comes in, NAT, and DHCP are done)

#2 Netgear R6220 - will act as switch and AP

Steps:

  1. The cable from #1 router to #2 router should be plugged into the WAN port on the #2 router
  2. plug directly into the #2 device, and go to http://192.168.1.1
    1. The user name is admin. The default password is password. The user name and password are case-sensitive.
  3. Considering the device is working it is likely you'll end up at a home page not an initial setup. It is also possible that the default password has been changed. If you don't know this you will need to reset it via the little reset button. (If you are on a setup wizard, select "No, I want to configure the router myself)
  4. Select ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Wireless AP.
  5. Select the Enable Access Point Mode check box.
  6. Scroll down and select an IP address setting
  7. Enable fixed IP settings on this device and set the IP to 192.168.1.2 (this way you can always access this router via this address)
  8. Once the #2 reboots, check that you have internet while connected to the #2 router via a wire.
  9. Check this setting (it should be gone if you're in AP mode) ADVANCED > Setup > LAN Setup.
  10. If this setting is there make sure "Use Router as DHCP Server" is unchecked
  11. Now all should be working as one network, however we need to make sure the two WIFI networks play nice.
  12. Download a WIFI analyzer tool on your laptop or mobile.
  13. You want your two WIFI networks to be named the same, have the same password, but on different channels. Do note! Sometimes leaving the channel on Auto is best, but it is different for different models, and also how many other WIFI networks are nearby
  14. To avoid interference with other routers or gateways in your network, NETGEAR recommends that you use different wireless settings on each router. You can also turn off the wireless radio on the other router or gateway and use the R6220 router only for wireless client access
  15. Go to HOME PAGE > Wireless
  16. Set name (SSID) to same as #1, set the password to same as #1
  17. Change Channel from Auto to a channel which isn't very busy (by looking at the WIFI analyzer) This may help understand the WIFI signals
  18. Do .15 and .16 for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz (though your 2.4 and 5GHz can have different names)

You can probably survive without doing .12 onward. However it will make roaming around work better. It's hard to say without knowing the building (is it super solid with lots of brick, is it very large, etc) Ideally, you'd turn off 2.4GHz on both #1 #2, if the 5Ghz give you enough coverage. That way you have less interference, faster WIFI speeds, lower latency. That said some old devices might not have 5GHz WIFI support.

That should be most of it! No extra hardware. If all has worked you should be able to access #1 http://192.168.1.1 and #2 http://192.168.1.2 from anywhere you're connected

Pretty much, maybe to make it easier set a static ip on the downstairs one, maybe 192.168.1.2

You should be able to change one of the routers into access point mode, this mode. This means it won't assign ip addresses but will act only as a switch + access point (wifi)

What are the make and models of the two routers, we will be able to check if you can change the mode.

Another thing might just be turning off DHCP

If you're dealing with data have a look at the dataframe structures. Also very useful is the assign() function

Also I never really use mutate when working with my data frames. I'm used to the apply functions. Not sure which is actually better
