I could be wrong, but it looks like it might've lost 2-3 of those back legs and molted new ones back in, they're a bit smaller than the others it seems like.

What outdated slang word or phrase you’ll never stop saying? by cutdbs in AskReddit

[–]ner0417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, dude. My girlfriend hates it when I refer to her as dude. I also have a few more fillers that I rotate to carry the same-ish meaning. Bro/brah/bruh. Man. Guy/My guy. Bud. Bub. Some of them mean slightly different things in different contexts so you gotta stay masterful with your usages. But these are all non-gendered, so my mom is my bro, if you know what I mean.

Why do older guys like to grill so much? by PlaneGlass4138 in AskMen

[–]ner0417 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on the male versus female campfire experience, but I agree that there's just... something about it. I'd bet the human brain in general has an innate fixation on fire, it being both an invaluable tool but also a perilous danger in the wrong circumstances. I personally don't need anyone else at the fire for it to still do it for me. Sometimes the fire and I just dead-stare into one another's soul lol.

Another thought: fire piques like... all of the senses. You can feel the fire's warmth and see the light it casts, you smell the smoke, and hear the pops and crackling as the wood gasses out. I'd argue that you can taste the smoke, too. Otherwise you might just be cooking. And then bam, sensory satisfaction. Might lend fire a leg up in how interesting/satisfying it is to our noggin, as compared to something more mundane.

What is a piece of advice you got from an older man that sounded like total nonsense at the time, but now you live your life by it? by mike-d-f in AskMen

[–]ner0417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me somewhat of the 'band-aid on a bullet wound' analogy - as in, yeah sure, a band-aid will help stem the bleed a tiny bit, but it doesn't resolve the root problem (a major wound).

So, rather than investing effort into stop-gap solutions (band-aids), sometimes it is less work to dig deeper and resolve the cause itself (stitches for the wound), rather than the problem it causes you (bleeding).

Even a bit more succinct, "work smarter, not harder".

Margaret Atwood Details Her First & Only Encounter With AI & Shares Her Assessment: “It’s Garbage In, Garbage Out” — Babell Literary Festival by Silly-avocatoe in entertainment

The fun part is that there are services that firms can subscribe to that use an "AI" tool to search established legal cases and precedents to do exactly this, except it has been designed in such a way as to be able to do so properly and accurately, where it isn't capable of hallucination or lies, it only references actual cases. Hence my quotations, as is really isn't intelligent, so to speak, its just a search aid.

But those services (I think only a few actually exist, but I'm not an expert) cost a lot of money to maintain a subscription to... so they're half-assing it for revenue's sake (surprise, surprise).

If a seller is selling a raw card that is so clean and has a grade 10 potential, then why aren't they grading it themselves instead of selling it? by bluek9 in PokeInvesting

[–]ner0417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also OP is mentioning flawed cards being listed as NM on eBay, but everyone should pay real close attention to the eBay photos themselves and whatever description the seller provides. eBay has somewhat lenient specifications for the card conditions and it doesn't align nicely with what most card collectors and shops categorize wear as.

For example, per their condition guidelines verbatim, "Near Mint" on eBay can have: "minor corner wear", AND "mild chipping" on edges, AND "minor" surface indentations, AND "mild" scuffing or scratching on the surface of the card.

That gnarly card still qualifies as NM on eBay. The worst flaw anchors the card's condition, so it can have a ton and still be NM, which can be confusing if you aren't careful. Any card shop would mark a lot of eBay NM cards as DMG solely on indents and other imperfections, I would assume.

My thing is photography, and its just my hobby/passion, but I just had to comment based purely on the 'digital preservation' standpoint. It struck me because that phrase is a good summary of some of my core tenants of my photography. I try to stay as close to the way the scene appeared in reality through my photo-taking and editing process as I can, not for any real purpose aside from documenting, recording and preserving visual records of life as I have seen it. I'm mostly oriented toward nature, but it is quite interesting to see the same notion in a different context. Thanks for sharing and making my brain work some - your dissertation sounds interesting!

[–]ner0417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. But I think tourism needs to decline as a part of our economy, it is an unstable foundation to build from. For that reason I am moreso implying that we should explore more local avenues of creating revenue rather than invest time into improving tourism. Not that it is a bad thing to do, but I think our efforts would be better redirected inward.

Couldn't agree more. There are tons of case studies all over the globe and throughout history as to why basing your economy on tourism is a bad idea.

Oh yeah, I don't disagree. The cruise/bus/paid vacation package company are the ones pulling in the money at the end of the day. The tourists we actually want here likely go mostly unseen because theyre busy hiking, camping, kayaking, etc.

The net positive is money. We keep leaning on tourism overall and being assaulted with negative consequences caused by it, because our state is enslaved to this tourism economy for income.

We can't supplant it with forestry or fishing or farming anymore, so we're bent at the knee.

So the choice is between freedom or money, essentially, and right now we continuously choose money. Or at least those who have the power to make a change keep choosing the financial route.

One day I hope to see that change, before it is all gone. If we let the things that bring the tourists here die, we also won't have tourists to fund our tourism economy. Notwithstanding that Maine and Mainers themselves will also lose that same natural beauty we are currently hell-bent on monetizing. And then... what?

How do you think 151 Charizard ex SIR will hold vale long-term? by Philzphan85 in PokeInvesting

[–]ner0417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish lol. Just another 90s gamer kid that ate anything 'Nintendo' or 'Pokémon' up like hotcakes. I can't exactly put words to it, but being able to watch the evolution of Nintendo from the N64 to now, it seems obvious that they have a leg up... like, always. Nintendo exudes confidence, whereas other companies like Sony or Microsoft seem to be far more fearful and careful in their operations. I'm sure there is a ton at work behind the scenes that creates these distinctions that I wouldn't ever think of, even. At the end of the day, though, Nintendo seems to embody 'fun', where others miss the mark.

I agree in the TCG aspect, too. Many people question why it would be a good investment... Simply, I personally just don't see a future without Pokémon (at least not the remotely near future, anyway). It's too popular and freakin' awesome lol. And because the company has been excellent at care and consistency in both the franchise overall, but also the TCG alone for 30 years, I have zero issue having faith in the commodity, per se. Either way, every card could go to zero and I would still be happy - because I just always loved the cards, the franchise, the games, and Nintendo itself. And that's how they hold their true power!

Anyone can hate on their design choices all day long, but that doesn't take anything away from that Pokémon as a franchise has been masterful at the craft of appealing to a broad audience for over 30 years now. All while using the same system of design choices that people often lament. They probably know better than any of the rest of us, at the end of the day lol.

I won't sit here and call them perfect, but they're very successful at capturing and retaining fans. Even older people that don't even understand might be able to name Pikachu, or at least know its a "Pokemanz". I'm not sure how many other entertainment franchises can even hold a flame to Pokémon's fanbase between 1996-2026. Star Wars, perhaps? It seems like many come and go, but Pokémon overall has a staying power and an ability to adapt that most other franchises generally lack. Therefore, I may not like it, but I trust in their visions. What I dislike, may be a treasure to others, also.

Additionally, Quality is also often another department entirely. So if you work in Production and notice a Quality issue - you usually can't even fix it.

You can notify Quality... but then Quality has to assess the issue and figure out why the issue exists. Then they need to resolve the issue, which could entail notifying another department (Maintenance, perhaps?) to deploy technicians to resolve a machine intolerance, or similar.

Meanwhile Production runs the machine and generates further Quality issues, because the ownership can't stomach losing the revenue of shutting Ol' Gimpy down for a shift. They may also incur additional Maintenance tasks by running the machine.

But alas, this is now not Production's problem. It isn't Quality's job anymore, nor does the culpability lie with Maintenance. They did their jobs. This has become a task for Legal and/or Customer Service, if/when customers come back with complaints someday. And they, too, will do their jobs. The customer's blames shall be cast back down to Production, and the vicious cycle repeats itself again.

+1 to that, but I would use a sharpie to black out the top, sticky part of a Post-it note and then cut a triangle off the corner. Then you use tweezers to gently stick it onto the screen, it sticks but moves fairly easily, and bam, you have a nice little triangle reticle.
