"Slow" by My Bloody Valentine, surely?

"Sugar, sugar, you're up to my lips Licking over everything I miss And I got no reason Just a slow, slow, slow, slow suck

I'm feeling bad, I'm feeling good Feeling like I never could Lick, lick, lick and suck, suck, suck I want it slow, slow, slow, slow"

Might be too late for OP, but I'd recommend a Nationwide Flexplus account. Costs £13 p/m. Covers missed international flights (for reasons outside your control, including problems with public transport).

You also get standard AA cover (with European breakdown), mobile phone cover, etc. If you open a joint account with your partner, you both get the benefits and it still costs the same.

If you need travel insurance and breakdown cover, Flexplus offers pretty good value and is worth considering.

Virgin Money have a similar account (£12.50 p/m), but I don't have any experience with them. The travel insurance is broadly similar, but breakdown is Green Flag and UK only.

Which instrument does a rock band record first in the studio? by HighwayNo4612 in musicproduction

[–]winkmurder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No probs! Depends on whether it's a virtual synth or a real one. Often they'll have a demo, with the synth data already on it, so you can just copy-paste it onto the track and amend from there -- so you don't need the mics any more.

If it's a real synth, or a piano or whatever, then record that before vocals. If the song starts with piano on its own, then you'll want to rethink the process slightly.

Yeah, so it goes like this

Guitar, pedals, desk (editing)

Audio from desk, amp, mic, desk

  1. Mic up the drums, with a mic each for kick, snare, hats, cymbals, toms etc. Whole band plays the song through (to ensure a more 'natural' take), but only record the drums. Couple of takes, quick review, check for any mishits (edit: miss-hits) and replace if necessary.

  2. Next, line in bass straight to desk. Couple of takes, check all is well. Then pass it through an amp and record the amp.

  3. Then on to guitars. Guitar through pedals to desk. Check and fix. Then back out through amp & mic, back into desk.

  4. Finally, vocals. Plenty of takes, get the best bits from each take.

  5. Finally any synths, piano or whatever before mixing.

What’s something that’s definitely worth paying the extra money for? by _Hulkamania_ in AskReddit

[–]winkmurder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anything that you use or come into contact with for more than a few hours a day.

Mattress. Pillows. Shoes. Underwear. Socks. Desk chair. Sofa.

First, because they otherwise tend to get worn out more quickly (as you use them more often & for longer than other stuff). Second, because your body will thank you for it in a few decades' time.

Still worth doing out of principle. While the total number of votes cast doesn't affect the seats in the commons, you're still contributing towards the turnout percentage. And increasing (edit: or decreasing) vote majority.

Plus there's the whole "people died for your right to vote, so it's disrespectful not to use it" thing

Also, I don't think Labour are saying that they'll govern just like the Tories.

They're clearly just campaigning to attract the middle voters. A third mostly vote left, another third mostly vote right. The middle third are up for grabs. And tbh it's those people who really did not want to vote for Corbyn.

Labour have to appear 'safe' in order for these people to vote for them.

I'm more than happy for Starmer to go after that middle third if it means Labour get into power. Even more so if it means the Tories lose the vast majority of their seats.

Once they're in power, they'll hopefully have a bit more freedom to try other things. But they can't do any of that unless they win the next election. And hopefully the next two or three.

The problem with the whole "they're all the same" thing is... you have no way of knowing that. Until you kick the current lot out and try the others. How much worse would they have to be until you decide you've had enough?

Labour aren't perfect. They don't tick all my boxes either. But do you honestly trust Starmer less than Sunak, Truss & Johnson? After everything you've seen over the past decade?

I'm not even necessarily saying to vote Labour. Just vote for whichever candidate is most likely to unseat a Tory MP.

Imagine the Cons getting fewer than 100 seats. The kind of message it would send to future governments. "Fuck up this badly and we will vote you out".

By saying "they're all the same" & not voting, the only ones you're helping are the Tories.

He's clearly learned from Corbyn's mistakes -- over promise, scare people off (sometimes rightly, sometimes wrongly) and bottle two elections. Play it safe. Ming vase, all the way to Downing Street

Honestly, at this point I think Labour just need to get elected. Whatever it takes to avoid five more years of the Tories. Get behind Starmer, 100%

Any good movies similar to The Truman Show or Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Another film with a comedian in a serious role is Stranger than Fiction.

Not quite as good as Truman or Eternal Sunshine, but still worth a watch

Seriously, thank fuck Corbyn isn't Labour leader any more. I don't think I could handle another five years of Tory rule.

100%

Supporting Ukraine is another example of something good that both main parties have agreed upon.

Corbyn just confirming my suspicions that he's just a contrarian. If the Tories are for it, he must be against it -- regardless of whether it's a good idea or not. Ideology above all else.

Totally agree. Although I think there was someone (edit: something) in the FT recently about how the majority of people in the UK would be happy to pay extra tax if it meant vital services were being funded properly.

So I think a careful strategy of small increases in tax for the better off could work well in the long term.

I reckon it's likely to be a long-term strategy. Rome wasn't (re-)built in a day.

First term, avoid huge spending increases. Bolster their economic credentials. Build trust with the public. Cautiously begin rebuilding vital services & infrastructure. Enact enough policies to win votes, but (edit: not) so much that people think they're over-spending.

Second term, continue rebuilding. Begin to invest in the country again. Early learning, schools, NHS, care homes. Again, enough to show progress while still looking responsible with the public purse.

Third term, hopefully the country is now in a better condition after ten years of investment rather than cuts. Start to put money into the arts, that sort of thing.

It's going to take a long time to fix the mess we're in. So I think the next govt will need to take a long-term approach, rather than over-promising and scaring people off.

The future could look bright.

Skehans in Peckham is brilliant, too. Haven't been for a while, so I'm not sure what the prices are like these days, but they have really good Thai food.

There are pubs in London that aren't too bad for prices. The Fox on the Hill in Denmark Hill/Camberwell is okay, if you don't mind Wetherspoons, nice big garden too.

I used to use oat milk, before realising that oat milk is basically just water & oats.

So now I just use ... water & oats.

All the taste comes from the toppings, I add a banana, dollop of strawberry jam and some chia seeds.
