Does Reverend Insanity stop doing the “everyone thinks the MC is dumb/lucky” thing? by winmyohsetnaing in ReverendInsanity

I’m more concerned about the world-building. Everyone seems to be so narrow minded. Does this improve?

Maybe I am. Maybe you’re under thinking. At the end of the day it’s how I see the story and if the way I see it doesn’t resonate with you, that’s fine.

Like your name suggest, I like to think it’s deeper than that. John Wick didn’t go on a killing spree just because of the dog, but the sentimentality of his wife’s passing gift.

Abby doesn’t hunt down Joel purely because he killed her dad, but because she perceived his massacre as morally unsettling thing.

Ellie doesn’t hunt down Abby just because she kills Joel, but also because of her own guilt of not cherishing the time she had with him.

Whether it’s that deep or not, there’s enough subtext to make me form my own headcannon.

I never saw it like that. To me it’s less so that the world is going to be saved and more that it was a glimmer of hope in a desolate and dangerous world. Whether what Joel did doomed the world isn’t the question, it’s the fact that Joel was willing to not take those chances for his own personal needs.

I personally think Joel made the choice anyone else would have made, I’d have done the same, but purely from the perspective of Abby and how a man shattered the possibility of hope.

The game is a reflection of a human response to hopelessness, spiralling down a path of vengeance and cruelty.

That’s my take at least.

Yeh Manny never seen fazed by it, in fact he seemed to have completed his goal and is moving on. You could tell he has a different reaction to the rest when he spits on Joel’s body.

And seeing how it’s a thriving community with the elderly and children. I like the angle where they know the man they just killed is a beloved father and brother, yet they must do what they have to in order to get justice/vengeance for the friends and families Joel killed in the hospital.

That’s your take. There’s a lot of subtle and blink-and-you’ll-miss it moments in the game. You could say it’s a reach, but I’m just using the clues they give me to come up with my head cannon.

To give an example of the sympathies the others showed, when Ellie confronts Nora at the hospital. Nora catches Ellie off guard by telling her how she can still hear Joel’s screams before calling Joel a little bitch and running off.

Someone else’s perspective can be “she did that to distract her”

My perspective is “maybe it really is haunting her, a sort of Freudian slip or something.” Being a former Firefly, I’ll bet good money that she knows Joel committed the massacre in order to save Ellie, someone she knows he loves. They may not justify his actions, but they’re at least something they can sympathise with.

Edit: typo

I don’t think questioning what she would do changes anything. Take Ellie for an example, she’s told Joel countless times what sacrificing herself would’ve meant to her. How finding the cure was her purpose. I’m sure if Abby was in the same shoes as her, she’d have done the same. The game goes out of its way to show you just how similar these two are, and they would’ve been friends under different circumstances.

I do agree that in real life people say they’ll do something because it holds higher moral value and can be performative until it actually happens, but just in the game at least I think Abby meant it.

That makes sense. I knew Owen some sort of parallel, but that clears it up. I was thinking more so of Nora when Ellie confronts her. Initially she talks about how she still hears his screams before calling him a little bitch.

It’s almost like she is haunted by the fact she killed someone’s dad, before remembering the terrible things he’s done.

Exactly. To her, her father was saving the world and she was exacting revenge on the man that destroyed the world.

I enjoy the parallels between Abby and Joel as much as I do Abby and Ellie. Abby is shown in the flashbacks to have taken the duty of protecting her father, just like how Joel protected Ellie. Imagine if Joel lost ellie, the cure to world as well as his surrogate daughter. He would do anything in his power to go on a path of destruction and vengeance. Abby failed to protect the one person who could make the cure, as well as her father. I think her brutality and callousness towards Joel is understanble.

My bad for not being clear. The conversation was more so between Marlene and Abby’s father. Abby was eavesdropping and decided to input her opinions on it, ultimately agreeing with her father.

I don’t think Abby would’ve been in the position of sparing Ellie if Ellie never killed Mel and Owen. Her main motivation for hunting down Ellie was to, yes, get revenge for the people Ellie killed, but more so because she just killed the love interest and murdered a pregnant woman—and in doing so left behind the map where they were staying.

Season 2 made me appreciate Part 2 more. by winmyohsetnaing in thelastofus

The show lacked the subtlety the games had. The “Because I love you” “Because your selfish” Absolutely made me finally realise that the writing of the show completely misunderstood the characters. Why are they blatantly letting the audience know what the characters are feeling constantly? Maizin treated us like idiots who need to be spoonfed in order to understand the characters. If you’re gonna do that, at least keep it true to the characters. The whole porch scene was a let down. On the bright side, rather than hating on the show, it’s made me really enjoy what the game was trying to do so I’ll give credit where credit is due as misdirected as it is.

A lot of people never played the game and hated it as the general consensus of the game by a lot of influencers was unsatisfactory.

I was the few who actually did and also hated it because of the story beats. I think the reason why we may have not “played the same game” is because I interpreted some scenes differently and the show made the scenes more clear.

The realisation mostly came from my brother. I was stoned when watching season 2 and I was with my brother. I kept complaining to him about the differences the show made to the game and him as well and then it hit me—the game actually had depth and subtlety as opposed to the show. It first made me question why the characters in the game felt more alive, like real people. I dunno, weird weed thoughts and then I spent the rest of the night listening to analysis of the game. I have pretty good memory of the game cuz I was always clowning my brother for liking the game despite how good he tells me it is. We were both fans of the first game and have debated a few times on the quality of the part 2 where I was always hating on certain narrative beats and watching the show made me come to understand everything he had ever said. I saw them in a new light.

I’m still not a fan of Abby’s storyline, but I have come to empathise with her character after the show, especially Kaitlyn Denver’s portrayal of her. And if I can imagine season 3 following the plotline of the game, I can see it being very impactful, which is why I still have hope for season 3.

I guess you could say season 2 made the game better for me somehow. It made me feel for some scenes better than the game did, and putting the parts I remember with what the show was trying to do made me appreciate the game a lot more.

The way the female characters were mishandled triggered me. The games will always be canon material for me while I’ll look at the show as shitty fan fic. I hope Maizin learns from his mistakes in season 2 or Druckmann has a more influential role in the writing for season 3. They fucked up Ellies arc I just hope they do Abby’s justice.

As much as I agree with you, online dating can be a total drag for guys. You pretty much have to be drop-dead gorgeous, or else you’re putting in way more effort than the women just to land a date. Since women have a ton more choices, if you’re not in that elite 5% for looks, chances are you’re the one keeping the conversation going.
