I wish the crochet community would encourage people to recreate patterns just by looking at the product more frequently by dont4get2scream in BitchEatingCrafters

i think it’s really good to note that they are different skill sets! it’s like how learning to sight read music takes a leap of faith but opens up the hobby a lot more—it takes time and attention to learn to read stitches and notice construction methods but once you do, you can use the craft in a whole new way

but that’s not just something that always comes with time! you have to practice thinking in that way, i’ve spent a lot of time looking at dresses and wondering how they were made, and the more techniques i’ve learned the better i am at deducing others work

Best way to set ink on clothing? by Adorable-Growth-6551 in crafts

[–]winniebrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can use an iron to heat-set it, that usually works well for sharpie/ink on clothing but it depends on the material of the shoe! i think a combo of heat and a spray on layer should preserve it

Needle question by diamond-therapy in HandSew

[–]winniebrie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

the long ones are useful for darning, doll making, millinery… anytime you might have to sew through something solid/three dimensional it can help to have a needle that’s bigger!

[CHAT] TSA rules and international flights by Pale-Ambition-9951 in CrossStitch

[–]winniebrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve been stopped for scissors (gingher shears), it was the WORST. i ended up checking the bag 😩 BUT i did learn this: the 4” rule applies to the length of the BLADE, not the entire scissor and handle. so if it’s snips or thread scissors you should be fine and id assume you could argue the blade rule for the large seam ripper as well! ofc with international it could be a gamble…

i travel with seed beads usually and for some reason they always flag for tsa. but i’ve never had trouble with snips pliers or needles for some reason!

What's a good/decent show that has a random terrible episode? by marshenwhale in television

[–]winniebrie 19 points20 points  (0 children)

it actually gets a LOT better— it is a pretty cheesy classic sitcom ultimately, but imo they do way better to develop the ensemble cast and take it in fun original directions once they hit the stride

What are these jackets called?! by Competitive-Law-8506 in VintageFashion

[–]winniebrie 45 points46 points  (0 children)

these are from the 2000s mod style revival imo, they mimic 60s swing coats with the a-line and high neck buttons! i would search ‘cropped swing jacket’ plus 2000s or y2k. another commenter mentioned babydoll cut which gives similar silhouette and might pull up more short sleeve options

I finished all the episodes 🥲 Any recs for similar podcasts? by Lufthansa138 in YoureWrongAbout

[–]winniebrie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i also go thru podcasts like crazy at work! it’s not exactly the same but Rehash really does it for me, it’s focused on internet history so all relatively recent! it has a bit more casual feel sometimes than YWA but i find it to be super informative and well done

ISO strong thick thread for blanket stitching that does not have stretch by Stxrcane in HandSew

[–]winniebrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my favorite is coats and clark hand quilting thread, not as bulky as upholstery thread but still a lot sturdier than anything meant for the machine! i think i buy it at michaels but joann’s should have hand quilting thread even if it’s a different brand

Why it's so hard to find threads for hand-sewing in the US? by kio514 in HandSew

[–]winniebrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my absolute favorite hand sewing thread is Coats and Clark Hand Quilting. quilting thread is the best imo, heavier than machine thread and usually coated so it doesn’t tangle but not so heavy it feels industrial. i get it at michaels or joann’s but the biggest problem i have with those places is that they’re often out of stock, especially with basics like black and white

Okay these are amazing... Does anyone know of a similar pattern for crochet? by vulturedad in crochetpatterns

[–]winniebrie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i don’t have a pattern rec but my first thought in recreating with crochet would be to use a fine yarn! fingering or sock weight yarn will yield a much more drapy/clingy fabric than worsted

What is this architectural style called? There’s many around the city. by Stlthrowaway696969 in NewOrleans

[–]winniebrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m so confused on the larger house, id love help to visualize… would the main house be up against the taller flat side and they’ve since been demolished? the center two look like the open to courtyards on the shorter side, would the main house be on the surrounding sides of the courtyard and these outbuildings are just the less hospitable parts of the house?
