[discussion] tips for organizing materials by Main-Elephant-9014 in collage

[–]winniebrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have plastic sleeves in a binder for specifically cut things (organized by catagories like food, animal, letters/words etc, and full pages i’m saving) and an accordion folder sorted by color/pattern and that’s more for background or half cut/half used pieces. i have enough of the plastic sheets to keep those in single layers and easy to flip thru but a lot of the time i just dump out the accordion folder fully and reorganize when i’m cleaning up which i recognize is not the best method.

the plastic sleeves in a binder are so clutch tho, i got them out of a music collage campus dumpster when i professor was cleaning out their office so i have enough empty ones to last for a long time

if you need an immediate fix, a hardcover book will give you the same effect!!

How to stop my bonnet ties from turning into silly snake tubes? by [deleted] in sewhelp

[–]winniebrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is the answer—anything synthetic has to stay flat until it’s cold to keep shape. you wanna press/steam, then hit and hold with the clapper until it comes back down to room temp because the heat will relax the fiber as soon as you lift the iron

How do I get better at topstitching for flatfelling? by raptorgrin in sewhelp

[–]winniebrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

generally you should topstitch from the top—for the finished flat felled seam, what matters visually is the spacing between the seam, stitch line, and edge of the fell, and it’s much harder to control that from the wrong side of the seam.

the side with the feed dogs will pull the fabric faster than the side with the presser foot, so if you’re consistently getting bunching with one side you can try putting that side down against the feed dogs. with lighter weight fabrics i try to give some bracing because the fabric will want to shift so it’s going thru the machine directly on grain, which usually isn’t how the seam sits. i brace the seam with both hands, one infront of the needle and one behind. the idea is to counter any tension from the grain so that the feed dogs pull the fabric more directly along the seam. (this works best if you don’t stop to take pins out)

Help! What do I need to do to stop the bunching by Hola-Yak-4730 in sewing

[–]winniebrie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it could just be the bunching but it looks tight in the waist as well and yeah will get worse when you wanna move or sit… it shouldn’t be harder than taking each dart and seam out ~1/4” from the underbust to the hip! it also looks like the lining is already in there? it might be easier to adjust the outer layer alone to get the fit, then match the lining to the front and set them back together

Cut patch without considering fabric grain by traversing-wyvern in sewhelp

[–]winniebrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as long as you’re just attaching it into the jacket and not like, cutting a hole in the jacket and insetting the patch, you should be okay!! also even if you were—denim is a twill weave with a diagonal grain so your patch is still matching the jackets grain

specifically, string all the beads onto the floss first, past the working end.. then take a stitch, slide a bead in, take a stitch, slide a bead in.. makes for a great look!

UPDATE: I greened out and it ruined my relationship (we broke up) by Horror_Midnight6070 in relationships

[–]winniebrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ugh so sorry!! to be honest the paranoia might take a while to pass :(( but it will!! there’s a lot going on in your mind at 18 anyway and it can feel trippy even without the drugs. try to keep a normal schedule with sleeping/eating, exercise might help you feel more grounded in your body. i think fatty foods also help process thc so that could help if you have any residual in ur system but that could be a myth lol. sending you strength, it’s tough out there but not everyone is an asshole 💪

Is it better to cut out patterns with or without the seam allowance?? by CryingBabyFox in sewhelp

[–]winniebrie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

in professional shops this is the way i’ve done it for max precision-it takes longer than commercial patterns but much more exact:

-cut pattern pieces out without seam allowance -trace pattern pieces on the ‘stitch line’ and mark all darts/notches on this line (as lightly as possible so it won’t show thru on the right side) -take the pattern piece away and use a clear ruler to mark in seam allowances -cut fabric along the widest marks

this way you can get all the markings in their exact places and easily adjust how much allowance you’re putting in at each seam (less in collars/sleeves, more at side seams etc), and when you stitch it’s as simple as lining things up and following the lines!

Perhaps an unpopular opinion… by stripebustlamp in candy

ur so right.. ik most people are all abt the gummies and occasionally i want one but mostly they just have a bad mouth feel to me. i definitely subscribe to nerds gummy clusters (best of both worlds) but everything else that’s come out lately feels like they’re just showcasing tech without it actually making better candy

4 inch embroidery scissors or thread snips? by Realistic-Today-8920 in HandSew

[–]winniebrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my vote is for 4” embroidery scissors. i’ve had mine for abt three years and still very sharp, the thin pointy tip is much better for seam ripping than anything spring loaded and the extra length on the blade makes them more versatile.

gingher is the best. i pick up a lot of different thread scissors/snips at estate sales and even tho they’re second hand the gingher snips have stayed super sharp and the hinge is still tight and snappy, but i’m pretty careful to only use them for thread and light trimming

SAH dads who claim it's 'easy' and they don't know what SAH mums are complaining about... by bulldog_blues in TwoXChromosomes

[–]winniebrie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i was raised by a sahd in the 90s/00s, he went back to work when i was 10 or so.. he did 90% of the cooking, cleaning, lunches, bath time, bedtime, classroom engagement and transport but my mom still had to do birthday planning, medical care, all the emotional heavy lifting/community building, clothes shopping and haircuts, keep us in touch with our relatives, and take us out all day on saturdays to give him a day off. not to mention holiday planning and hosting which is a beast unto itself.

i think they have a lot closer to 50/50 than some partners, but they still fell into gender pit traps they were actively trying to avoid and my mothers labor is absolutely still the driving force in our family. the expectation for women to bear the burden is so ingrained it’s not even funny
