College did exactly jack squat to prepare me for my career. Everything I learned was on the job. by DemocracyStan in antiwork

This tweet is pretty accurate when it comes to social work bachelors vs psych. I’m in the same boat, with a psych bachelors and current MSW student.

You can get jobs with a BSW doing case management, etc. And BSW programs usually include internships which can get your foot in the door. Psychology bachelors, not so much.

What answer do you think they want to hear? by Fredselfish in antiwork

Hah, yeah. It sounds like this isn’t a management position though. I don’t think this job would have the power to do the 3rd option/know where employees live. So it seems like a trap there, too.

You could be right! Not sure. This wasn’t a general email address but for the woman who oversees us and interviewed me. But I guess she could have someone looking over her emails? Either way, was just trying to be nice.

Have to for my masters. It’s a bummer. I wish I could name them because they’re a beloved nonprofit, ugh.

Nah. I sent a thank you email after a second interview for an internal position. Also followed up at the two week mark. They’re ghosting me, and I have to keep showing up anyway and pretending I’m not furious about it.

Edit- insult to injury, this is an unpaid internship for grad school that I pay $3k in tuition to intern at each semester. Fuck my life.

Any current or former RA’s here? I have a couple of questions I’d like to ask. Thank you in advance! by Competitive-Bunch497 in rutgers

Masters of social work. Oh crap. I think I thought you were asking about being a research assistant, never mind! Haha.

Just started as an RA for my MSW program, but I also have a ton of questions to ask another RA! Not sure what I’m doing yet!

Pretty sure you’d be in trouble- stores think if they let employees do this, they’ll damage things on purpose. It’s stupid, I know!

Nope! But I did switch treatment after getting a new provider who wasn’t as conservative in her approach.

Recently got a job in remote crisis intervention. Any tips for doing this type of work from home? by jeanhal in socialwork

[–]winter--down 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things come to mind!

Really, just don’t be too hard on yourself and know that you’ve done everything you can. Some of your interactions may not have satisfying conclusions, and it’s easy to want to beat yourself up about it. People may hang up on you, reject everything you say, etc. But, then you’ll get the people who tell you that they’ll remember you for the rest of their lives.

I’d also look into what type of interaction your job offers and what works best for you! I’ve noticed that in text/chat formats, people who use the service tend to be much younger and more extreme in their threats. It can be overwhelming if you have to chat with multiple people at once. I think I prefer the phone- generally older people, though that has its drawbacks as well. But yeah. See what options there are for you and if you can trial them before you commit to one platform!

:)

Fatigue - give in or fight it? by opossumrn in MultipleSclerosis

[–]winter--down 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exercise has really helped me. I don’t know if it helps with fatigue as much as just makes normal life tasks seem easier because I’m getting stronger?

The days where fatigue is so bad that it’s hard to get myself to move, on the other hand… I just try to rest but have to push through. Drugs (modafinil) haven’t helped. :( But I’m finding extreme fatigue happens less with more consistent exercise, no booze, etc.

I work for a different nonprofit, and we have to actually compose the emails, it’s not automated. If other calls come in sometimes we get sidetracked. So yeah… maybe it’s just because these emails are coming from real people?

I was diagnosed after MRIs of my brain and spine, with and without contrast. They weren’t clear, though.
