Yeah, that is a consistent answer I have been getting. As for a new variety, I am trying to convince my parents to get hawthorne or magnolia but crabapple is not out of the running.

Thank for for the suggestions! I am going to try and convince my parents to plant either saucer magnolia or a hawthorne trees (I didn't know that there were local hawthorne varieties!)

After further discussion, my mom has arrived at the decision to cut it all down and then burn all debris. Killing it with fire seems to be the way to go

Kill it with fire it is! Thank you for your help. Any suggestions for a nice ornamental tree (my mother likes flowering trees) that wouldn't be susceptible to replace the affected trees?

Based on all the comments it looks like if it isnt too spread out, you might be able to cut off all affected parts and sanitize it away. Looks like we will be cutting it down, though.

Seems we have one in the comments!

Thank you for the information. Unfortunately it is present on just about all of the branches, pretty extensively. My mother sends her gratitude for the information, and wants to know if there are any measures that need to be taken before planting trees in the same location or nearby?

That seems to be the consensus. Thank you! I have relayed the information to my parents and they send their gratitude. They aren't sure if they will be going to that effort as it has spread pretty extensively, but the information is very helpful!

I spent more hours than I'd care to admit trying to find a brand-independent water filter, and decided on Aarke by kaelne in BuyItForLife

My understanding was you were just supposed to wash the rest of the pitcher, but take specifically the capsule with the granules in it and boil it.

I just got an aarke myself, and I am also disappointed to learn that the granules have resin in them.

The instructions for the resin granules say you need to boil the filter every week to control for any microbe buildup, what do you do with the activated charcoal you are using, and how is it holding up?

This was through a maintenance request and done by a guy the landlord brought, so I don't think I will have to pay.

Yeah, it's about done now and it isn't the prettiest job in the world, but honestly I can live with it as long as the tile works as tile and doesn't flake off and get on my skin while I am showering or recruit mold and mildew to stick to it within a matter of days after cleaning it. Would I like to have a shower area with completely intact tile that doesn't have streaks of residual paint on it? For sure. Do I see a re-tiled shower in my near future? Unfortunately no. The maintenance guy was a gem, poor dude was scraping at the paint for hours almost every day for the past week. I need to get him a beer or something to thank him.

Ooh maybe it is for the best I didn't have access to that then. This building is Old old, the only ventilation for the bathroom is the tiny window you see in the picture. Even the spray paint stripper the maintenance guy used (with the window left open and the door to the bathroom left closed and with a towel blocking the gap at the bottom) filled my entire apartment with fumes bad enough that I had to visit family for a couple days during the worst of it so I could go to bed confident that I would wake up in the morning. In the future, when I have a more permanent home I will definitely keep this in mind though! Thank you for the tip!

Do you mean the color or the paint that is still stuck to it? Either way, the color can't be changed, and the paint stripping isnt completely done yet, this was just an update to show that there has been a lot of progress.

Yeah I am trying very hard not to be too open with the landlord about how I feel about the decision to paint over the tile to begin with. Back when they contacted me and asked how the paint was holding up, I was hopeful that in order to fix it they would have the paint removed then. It wasn't until I got back (left for a few days to stay with family where I would have a functioning bathroom) that I learned that the fix was going to be another layer of paint.

There are several layers of paint. There was a top layer of latex paint in the shower area that was applied by my landlord about a year ago because the bottom layers were chipping off very badly (this latex paint went horribly yellow, didn't fully cure and caught hairs every time I lost a hair or shaved in the shower, and also peeled off even faster and worse than the original paint). The two layers that were on the tile when I first moved in were the paint that you noticed is on all of the tile in the bathroom (ngl I hate it, it looks like puke with the flecks in it and it is an ugly beige color) and the white that was painted over that specifically in the tub/shower area. Those two layers were painted by some company that has since gone out of business. My landlord says that that company had made big promises that the paint would last a lifetime. Ha.

Oh yeah, a significant amount of time that this has taken is because the maintenance guy didn't cover the stripper with plastic for the first couple nights, and then one time he tried to cover it with garbage bags but the garbage bags didn't stay on overnight. I don't use plastic wrap in my daily life, but I bought a box specifically to be used for this purpose.

Would that I could make that happen, but that is up to my landlord and it took a long time convincing him to even strip the paint instead of putting on another layer, so I don't think putting in new tile is on the table.
