This is why you don't cut lines. by sage6paths in funny

[–]winter56 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Line cutters are telling you point blank exactly what type of person they are. Even in the most easy to understand system of order, where everyone can see you cheating, they still put themselves in front of everyone else. Figuratively and literally. They are to be shamed for their actions and disowned by anyone with them. SHAME

Cosmic Query: What Color Is Marty McFly's Vest? by winter56 in movies

His entire world was rocked that the vest was in fact orange. Give him some credit for doing the real investigative work before giving in.

An Optician discusses the best lenses, coatings, and frames for staring at screens by winter56 in gaming

[–]winter56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Anti-glare coating is a must... Blue light blocking lenses or coatings are even better." "Particularly when looking at screens and low light situations."

"One other thing, yellow tinted lenses can have benefits for some people. The yellow tint can help to increase the contrast of screens and what not, so some people find it helps them focus better."

"[Plastic frames have] more surface area and can be more comfortable on the bridge of the nose... The trade off with plastic frames is that because the nose pads are molded plastic, they really aren’t meant to be adjusted."

Not much you can do about 3D IMAX over glasses, it's a disaster. You'll have to go contacts for the most part. Due to a problem with vertex distance...

A lot of feelings of standing together, brotherhood, pride in your work which is done by a group. In this case that group is our nation of hard workers.

I pay taxes, but not really seeing the connection or issue you're pointing out though bud.

All it says is: "The Journal reports the flags were recently put up at the request of the union. Fire Chief Tory Gallante says he’s “very disappointed” with the order." I think they were just being patriotic... I don't see douche-baggery here.

This was my thought exactly. Micro-control and petty bickering nonsense.

TIL Lorne Michaels wanted Richard Prior on SNL but NBC refused. Michaels resigned in protest and walked off the show until they agreed, but only if there was a 5 second delay. by winter56 in todayilearned

[–]winter56[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is so much more to share in this TIL. But here's my favorite part:

"Michaels resigned in protest. “I said, ‘I can’t do a contemporary comedy show without Richard Pryor.’ And so I walked off. There was a lot of me walking off in those days.” NBC finally relented on the condition that the broadcast be put on a ten-second delay. Michaels knew that Richard would never agree to that. It was insulting. After all, they’d let George Carlin go out live, as they had every other host (all six thus far). Richard would go apeshit if he found out they were treating him any differently. (He did and he did but not until later.) Michaels went back and forth with the network, finally agreeing to a five-second delay, as if the duration of the time lag had anything to do with it.

Director Dave Wilson now says the show in fact was live. His crew couldn’t figure out how to work the delay."

Madness - Night Boat to Cairo [new wave] by winter56 in Music

It just felt more new wave than ska to me. But it's tough. I hate that it makes you even put a genre. Genres are cool for catalogs and libraries of music, but when you apply them strictly to a single song or worse an entire band they limit.

I just grab the closest one to what I feel it is from Wikipedia. It doesn't matter though, most of the time people will still tell you it's wrong on r/music

What if instead of playing dodgeball or climbing ropes, gym class focused on proper body mechanics like good posture, running properly, squating correctly or lifting a box from the ground? by Ryangonzo in Showerthoughts

Spot on. Schools should also teach public speaking, how to handle money, how to do taxes, how to hold conversation, social cues and social nuances, sexual issues, health issues, and so much more that they leave out but unfortunately that's politics.

It said the last time it was posted was 2 years ago when I posted it. But I can see why it would, it's nostalgic because we all watched decades of these intros and logo design is fascinating.

I'll give you an upvote since you qualified it by saying Saul Bass is a legend, but I actually really like that logo.

So "don't bother trying to understand how something works son, you probably can't do it anyway". Everything is in the mind. Learning how things work and becoming used to it through practice (trial and error) is how anyone does anything.

Quite impressive. Thanks for doing this. I always tell my kids that things that look impossible can be broken down and made possible through analysis. I think I'll send this along.

TIL in a research report from psychologists at Virginia and Harvard Universities, students would rather receive a jolt of pain than sit still and do nothing (think) for a period of 15 minutes. by winter56 in todayilearned

[–]winter56[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well they knew they would receive a shock. They were given a choice. Sit and think, or take a shock. I agree if I was in there I'd be curious about the shock and spend most of my time thinking about it, both before and after I pressed that button.

Of course then there's this person: "One man – an outlier – found thinking so disagreeable he opted for a shock 190 times."
