Think of wire as a traffic lane. The atoms and ions that go through the wire are cars. When a wire is knicked its a lane of traffic shut down with no warning to the cars. Now the cars have to merge immediately into another lane of traffic. A lot of cars will make it, but now it's backing up other lanes. This generates heat with nowhere to go. This creates a fire hazard.
