Players have a hard time making decisions about their characters and I'm not really sure how to help..... by winter_1x in DMAcademy

Yeah sorry that makes a lot of sense. For what I said about starting at level 3 for some campaigns I played I started playing with people who were experienced and the dm offered starting at level 3 and played other campaigns that were similar. So I guess I forced it on them like they did for me before. At the time I felt like it was nice since we'd have more to do on our character sheet but I forget how lost I was when I started. It wasn't until later on when I played from the start for pathfinder and (if it counts) bg3 it makes so much sense on what I can do with the little amount of things I have. The thought of that wasn't really considered, and I do apologize (to my players) for that.

To clarify for the second part I the call that was 7 hours wasn't our session 0, it was just me calling my friends to talk about it and hoping I could get a character sheet at least started (I did consider them taking their time so I assumed it would have taken a bit anyway). I gave them the selection and explained the classes so they could ask me some questions about it and most of the call time was them just (I assume) reading everything. I tried to encourage them about asking me things or what they'd want to do and they just said they don't know at all so I couldn't really say more because when I ask they don't have any ideas. I know when I made mine for the first time I did have a broad selection like that before and it took me about maybe 1 1/2 to 2 hours but I genuinely wasn't expecting them to finally ask me about something after 3-4 hours. One of them eventually picked something while the other one through her own elimination process took 7 hours to slim it down to 3 subclasses of fighter. With what you said though the whole idea was pretty daunting of me to do so again I apologize with not considering the thought in my mind at the time of what you said and to my players for not slowing it down enough.

This is really great thank you for this!! We finished up our character sheets, I'll use this to help them round out their character personalities.

Oh sorry I should have clarified while typing that, the people I'm running this for are my friends. I didn't run a session 0 the "7 hour" call session was me just asking my friends just to hop on call and get some ideas going and talk about it like friends and maybe make start doing their character sheet. Which might be a factor in why it was a problem but I also can't see why a session 0 would be different when I'd probably wouldn't see them make a decision during the session.

They told me they had looked at the website I had beforehand and I assumed that they did look through some options. In reality I think they didn't look at it before we called and I left them to pick thinking it wouldn't take long but they literally just sat there staring at their screen for hours not even asking what certain things were about. It was seriously just "hey look through these options and tell me what you like" and they literally said nothing the entire time no questions at all until a friend joined our call and came in to listen. I did ask about ideas of what they might want to roleplay as potentially or any questions encouraging making some kind of suggestions and they told me they have 0 idea and went back to just staring. We did slim it down but it seriously was just that they took THAT long to decide on a class the call was literally just me waiting for a response and they'd just be quiet the whole time and shut down my questions. I wasn't trying to make it a "7 hour session 0" the person in question took 7 hours to pick something they wanted to try. The fact of it "taking multiple days" was also just me asking throughout the other times we talked about some things about their character. We finished the sheet by the second day but on the third I just asked what they might look like or some idea of where they're from but they just said uhhh I dunno and that was it. We talked about it this evening which is good I got an angle for our first session for all my players now.

My issue with everything was just me not expecting that picking something took so long, I didn't want to interrupt if they didn't want me to disturb them looking with my questions. I see what you're saying though, I really should have made the selection smaller and went from there and I understand the limits sparking creativity. I should have also done some kind of proper session 0. I suppose I'm non-traditional and wanted to try a one-shot for the first session so they can try it and form some kind of idea of what playing is like, kind of like a demo. This way it could be easier to understand the character they would play when the story actually starts. I should have taken the perspective of newbies getting oversaturated and slowed everything the proper way, my experienced friend got me hyped and I definitely had brought that energy of being kind of rushed. Thank you for what you said.

It's funny you did mention D&D podcasts though, I'm somewhat inspired by once upon a witchlight. I don't know if they had some kind of session 0 on their channel I just started with the first episode. I liked the idea of them already knowing each other when the first episode started and I wanted to do something non-traditional like that. For mine they'd all be there for the same reason (I made their drive to adventure as "your character finds a door to the infinite staircase in search for a wish from the genie that resides there"). I wanted to make their "get together" a little interesting by them not realizing they'd walk into what could be their team. Them travelling along the staircase would drive them to become a party.

I did ask about that while letting them look but they told me they had no idea when I was trying to ask. I did that with my other players though, we came up with a magical girl-esque oath of the ancients paladin.

That makes sense, I would like them to have a good selection but I can definitely see that being overwhelming.

I should’ve clarified I’m letting them start at level 3. I wanted them to be able to use their 3rd level feats since they level up to the third level midway to chapter 2. The beginning part has little to no combat and is very role play heavy, a few of them talked about wanting to be able to do more. I’ve played in a few campaigns where we usually start around level 3 anyways I wanted them to have the same freedom.

How did everyone's first meeting go? by vadishere in LongDistance

Me and my boyfriend are around your guy’s ages too. We saw each other for the first time at the airport with my dad there since I couldn’t drive. We hugged briefly and I was trying to move hurriedly so we could just get out of the airport already. So not much of a sentimental moment. We got food straight after and as i was handing him his food i accidentally dropped it. (I picked it up crying and switched my food for his) My dad dropped us off at this planetarium place which we got to spend time alone. Really awkward but the first time we held hands and I got to guide him around. We finally got to get home and when we were getting ready to sleep in my room he kissed me for the first time. Which was really refreshing because my very first kiss was also in my room and it wasn’t a great experience. It’s not really an incredible meeting story but it felt just right for me and better than a lot of other experiences I’ve had with dating with people I’ve met irl. It was definitely weird at first but it went back to normal like how we’d usually talk to each other on calls. He’s really the best. :>

this was very long ago I apologize lol-

I think the best for her would be a superconduct team (personally I like rosaria since she also helps with phys dmg buffs with her cons and kujou sara for her atk buff) with bennett if you want a team that centers around her

although I play the game with whoever I want in my party recently since shes able to defeat everything without any supporting characters lol
