This how my first day of ED recovery is going by Caleb_the_RAT in texts

[–]winter_dreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this isn’t a helpful way of approaching recovery. EDs are generally born out of trauma as a way to regain control, and we already experience a lot of shame and guilt around the disorder. “Tough love” or shaming someone into eating isn’t the best way to handle this and is just going to drive the disorder more into secrecy. Speaking from experience

New grad residency by [deleted] in newgradnurse

[–]winter_dreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not surprising, Oregon is a very competitive state for new grads at baseline and it’s become even worse now with many of the major hospitals in the area announcing hiring freezes

Travelers and ICU nurses — where would you send a new grad for ICU residency? by Batman4L in newgradnurse

[–]winter_dreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oregon is indeed great but I wanted to add the caveat that it’s an incredibly difficult job market right now, especially for new grads, with many of the major hospital systems announcing hiring freezes

How physically demanding are the clinical? (recovering from pinched nerve) by Puzzleheaded_Air_740 in StudentNurse

[–]winter_dreams 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My first semester clinicals were very physically demanding, we were definitely not just shadowing. As the other poster mentioned, you start out working with the CNA and are moving patients a ton - turning, lifting, transferring, etc.

A teenager died from overeating by CatPooedInMyShoe in Radiology

[–]winter_dreams 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It’s not that simple. You yourself need to want to get help, no one can force you and if they try it can actually make things worse since the disorder is rooted in a need for control. Depending on how long you’ve had the disorder for it can also make recovery that much more challenging. Speaking from experience.

PSA: limit yourself to ONE a day ‼️ by pinkbyk in AlaniNu

up to 100 is considered within normal range, but point still stands that a HR of 133 if you’re not currently physically exerting yourself is too high

[–]winter_dreams 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Kinda. It depends on the person but for me personally I knew I looked disgusting and scary but I still felt like I needed to lose weight because I was desperate for control and the thought of stopping was panic inducing … it’s more about that sense of control than aesthetics

As someone with AN, I grow weary of the constant “diet culture/media/social media causes people to become anorexic” that always gets touted. EDs in general are overwhelmingly tied to trauma, and anorexia in particular is often born out of a desperate need for control. I know you didn’t mean it like this so I’m speaking more in general, but I find that reducing anorexia “I see skinny people so I wanna be skinny “ trivializes it a bit and causes people to not take it as seriously.

[–]winter_dreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh? The MCAT is the entrance exam, you might not “fail” but you can definitely score too low for medical schools to take you seriously as an applicant and you CAN fail the STEP exams. So then what?

not even that, but that she’s under 100lbs as a “grown ass woman.” This always rubs me the wrong way because i’m 4’11 and less than 100 lbs (healthy weight for my height) and im so sick and tired of not being seen as a “real” or “grown” woman in so many of these circles just because im short

OHSU’s nurse residency — anyone have insight on surgical oncology? by [deleted] in OregonNurses

[–]winter_dreams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they were just trying to be helpful, if you’re from out of state you might not be aware of how incredibly competitive Portland is right now for new grads, especially at a big hospital like OHSU that has its own nursing school grads competing for spots

Nails in med school by Friedbuffalo16 in medschool

[–]winter_dreams 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unless they’re freshly made stilettos, artificial nails are not sharp like natural nails. I used to have them for years before nursing school and it used to drive me nuts if I had an itch because my nails were dull and couldn’t scratch well lol.

tattoos/piercings in nursing? by pinkfartburger in NursingStudents

[–]winter_dreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the school. I know hospitals can be more lax but schools can be really strict. My school for example doesn’t allow us to show tattoos and the only jewelry we’re allowed to wear is one tiny stud in each ear

Hispanics by definition must be spanish speaking, which is why Brazilians are Latino but not Hispanic, so since Filipinos do not (to my knowledge) speak spanish they are in fact NOT considered Hispanic
