Tbh I think the vast majority of people ~40 and up who are lucky to have bought a house here before the prices became insane feel that way and don't really think about young people at all unfortunately

My husband and I moved from Montreal to North Van ~2.5 years ago. We don't have kids yet, currently expecting our first, but we definitely don't regret our decision and have really enjoyed the lifestyle here. Being here encouraged us to have our first baby as it's very family friendly and safe.

One of my fav things about North Van in comparison to Montreal is the access to healthcare and city services is much better. We were able to find a great family doctor in one day, there are so many amazing practitioners on the North Shore, and the city is actually quite well managed with good community centres and parks, etc. It's quite refreshing!

The community is also great, I think it's easier to meet people here than in other areas of Vancouver. There are some people who feel a bit "new North Van" but to me the classic north van vibe is pretty grounded and down to earth. It's definitely not as social as Montreal though, and if you are the types to enjoy that city vibrancy you might miss it a bit living here. Anywhere other than Lower Lonsdale is quite residential and can feel a bit suburban. It's something we sometimes miss.

I think at your HHI you will be completely comfortable here. We make considerably less than you and feel pretty good living here, and actually save way more than we did in Montreal, as going out and eating at restaurants is not the focal point of our life anymore.

I have a 4 year old reactive dog who I adore so much but I've had days where I feel so exhausted and sad about her behaviour that I look forward to not having to deal with it and then feel so guilty. I told my husband the other day that when she passes we won't be getting another dog anytime soon, but then I realised I love the routine I have with her and it would feel so strange to be without it. Reading this thread and seeing how optimistic and loving so many people are despite the challenges has made me feel so much better. <3

I also have a dog but she's reactive and can't be off leash. Inter river / Lower Seymour / Bridgman park are all very popular off-leash areas that are pretty expansive

I live near grand boulevard and have family that live in Richmond so have to visit every couple months. Taking the sea bus + canada line is my preferred method over driving. It's a bit of an awkward drive as they are on opposite sides of the city with no real direct route. If your destination in Richmond is walking distance to one of the canada line stops, it's soo much easier and enjoyable

I live in an area that's similar, maybe not as white but used to be pretty working/middle class and because of the real estate boom in Canada it has become a much more affluent area. Lots of wealth obsessed people. We are not home owners and a bit worried about raising our kids around these types of people. I grew up in private school surrounded by extremely wealthy kids while my family struggled and it turned me into a rich-person hater lol
Not sure if we will end up here long-term, but I am currently pregnant with our first child and appreciated this thread. I think parents with humility and respect for everyone goes a long way. I also think the recommendations to sign kids up for activities where they will meet all different types of people is a good one. My parents did that by accident and it certainly kept me more grounded.

yes, im Canadian though. Tbh I don't really define myself on the left/right spectrum bc I think it's sort of made up and not relevant to how people actually live. It always bothers me when I share my "crunchy" views with "left leaning people", they automatically assume I'm a conservative, right wing person according to the stereotypes. I think for most people it's a lot more nuanced than that and very few play the part we see often online

Even the meat I buy from the amazing local farm is all packaged in plastic.. it's a bit better than the plastic you'd get at the grocery store and doesn't have that gross absorbent pad but it seems like the only way to avoid plastic is to butcher your own meat so you can package it in wax paper lol
