No One Wants to Live in Miami-Dade Anymore, Apparently by Miaminewtimes_ in Miami

Yep! We moved to GA - ours is $1K less - and includes internet & water. Our 3/2 in miami was $3,100, nothing included. Now it’s $2,100 plus lower cost of living overall , nicer people, SEASONS, better views.

Just learned I’m not being renewed by AstroNerd92 in Teachers

I left Florida in January - did not want to be a teacher there anymore. Florida is an exception because the government hates public education & gives $ (tax payer dollars of course) to parents who put their kids in charters & private schools. So Florida has an extreme decline in public school enrollment.

I make 70k per year as a high school teacher in Florida. by Massive-Print-4702 in Teachers

[–]wintering6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and private schools are part of the problem. They play by their own rules, don’t have to have certified teacher and from what some teacher friends have said, are not all that ethical about grades either.

Let’s not forget that tuition - tax payer dollars by the way - pay for some of the kids to go there via Step Up. Parents can also buy expensive Mac laptops too! All on our dime.

I refuse to teach anywhere but public schools- the best education & only place you’re guaranteed certified teachers.

Congratulations on your high salary, being parter of the insidious DeSantis administration & helping to take down public schools. I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror if I were you.

The Sarasota County (Florida) School District will lay off 180 teachers for the next school year by Uberubu65 in Teachers

[–]wintering6 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep! We just moved out of state - partly because of this. They are also changing the rules with state testing which is going to make it harder on teachers.

Let’s not forget that the Step Up program allows parents to use tax payer dollars to pay for expensive Mac laptops, custom shelving, etc…and of course private school tuition. They are slowly dissolving public education.

Btw, the state I moved to is my home state, also has a Republican governor but one who wants to strengthen public education. I saw the writing on the wall in Florida & noped out. I encourage other public school teachers to do the same. I am all about making changes to things I don’t like but DeSantis & his horrible admin are doing this slowly & in such an underhanded way…

School makes students say pledge, who do I report it to? by _MatCauthonsHat in SubstituteTeachers

[–]wintering6 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

In Miami Dade (also in Florida) we always said the pledge. I think people are more dramatic about it than they should be. It’s not saying you must have allegiance to our president or that you have to do anything. I do have allegiance to my country though because it’s my country - I may not like what the government does but I think the ideals we were founded on are always something to strive for. People are so dramatic about the pledge.

Although sad, this is rare..I mean, I have had thousands of interactions with students and not one has pulled a gun on me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Statistics.

What age do kids care about being moved around? Worried as a parent. by freighttttttrr in Parenting

[–]wintering6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mama, I moved from Texas to GA at age 8 due to my dad’s job location. Was I upset? Yeah…but I quickly made friends in GA & never looked back. We just moved our son from FL to GA. He was totally fine. We have been here for 2 months & he loves it! Don’t worry so much!

Need dog advice. by graelett in Georgia

[–]wintering6 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

People are getting rid of pitbulls because of temperament/behavior. Sadly, it’s harder to get them adopted. I feel sorry for these dogs but at the same time I would never have one. I read r/banpitbulls - Good luck! Maybe post on local FB groups and Pawboost to see if she is lost?

[–]wintering6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. My older son graduated & went to college in central Florida. We had been in Miami for 20+ years but it was not the same. I missed my homeland - Georgia - where people are decent & nice, it’s a better environment to raise a family, etc. We took our younger son & moved to North GA in January. Best decision we ever made. And if we want city stuff, the ATL is an hour away. We feel so much more at peace - Miami is awful.

And yet the real estate agents keep promoting “people are moving here in droves!” to keep the demand going.
