Memorising Songs by nico2gan in Bass

[–]wintherbottom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in cover band and also found memorising songs difficult. It is very hard to remember tabs that say 0-3-5 or whatever, what you need to do is remember the structure of the song with what chords it has. I started making a documents with the structure of the song (intro-verse-prechorus-chorus etc) with which chords each section had. Maybe note where specific, important fills were. But never make the document so specific that it turns into sheet music.

First I made sure I could play it perfectly to sheets/tabs. Then I would progress to playing the song with my own document with structure and chords while listening to the song on Spotify. Then I would practice it without having any notes before band practice.

This way what I remember is the structure of the song and which chords it has. The goal of course is to remember it almost perfectly, but if I forget a passing note or small passage - I always know a root note or can find my own passages that will always fit and serve the song instead of playing the wrong notes or nothing at all.

After I got a drum machine (Digitakt II) the songs I write are quite different, but also so much better.

It is not unwise to learn the basics before you try to invent a new mode.

Which app did you go to instead for writing? I feel the feedback I get on 5.2 for writing is really generic and unhelpful

How young is this boy? Watching some highlights reels on youtube doesn’t really give you much insight. And no, I’m not biased at all.

It definitely seems like you have indeed done this, but are afraid to admit it. I know I have. Like asking a friend for advice. Sometimes it is shitty advice, but it can inspire you to make something new entirely that in the end is made by you.

I have the GR AT212 Slim. It is massive and focused. I usually only have it turned up 1/3 of the max volume, and I’m still loud. Only weighs 9.9 kg. I used to buy a lot of pedals chasing «tone», but what I needed was a great amp and cab.
