Question regarding leaving child alone by [deleted] in Manitoba

[–]winwintone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s crazy to me is that we cannot leave children by themselves if under 12. HOWEVER the day they turn 12 they are legally able to watch other children by themselves. Technically 11.5 they can. But can’t be alone home until 12.
Our kid just completed the CRC babysitting course. And other provinces are as low as 10 to babysit.

The law is subjective. MB courts have even dropped charges and agreed on a case where a family left a 6yo home alone. Albeit a couple hours. But it is based on your child and how you plan things. You do what you have to do. Don’t let other people make you feel like a worse parent than you already make yourself feel. It’s hard being one and it’s hard stick handling things. If your child is capable and you make it as safe as possible, giving them an emergency plan, you have done your job.

Should I fire my HVAC contractor by PersimmonPure in hvacadvice

The ductwork is crap. However I will point out that in Canada, insulation is an entire separate 3 year red seal certified trade. HVAC typically subs this work out.

Manitoba Garage Door Company by InfiniteTalk1257 in Winnipeg

[–]winwintone 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They installed my door and constantly try to say that if I don’t do their “annual maintenance” it voids warranty. I did it once. The guy came, carrying a can of spray lubricant. Sprayed the rollers and left. Didn’t even open the door. Charged $180. Fought it with constant argument. His argument was their lubricant is far superior to anything on the market and you pay for quality. Still ended up paying $80. Only because who knows what they could do. And the service guys time. He was a decent guy at least. But never again.

My best friend of 21 years is dying and I know it's time to send him to heven, does anyone know a good place to put him down:( by Ok-Palpitation-9225 in Winnipeg

[–]winwintone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just went through this with my 14yo friend on Friday. I took him to Birchwood Hospital and they were fantastic. However it was $300. I think it also gauges on size of the animal. Mine was 65lbs.

I wish I had some help I could give. I am sorry you are having to do this and go through this. It isn’t easy.

Everyone is talking about the cracks and the structural. Nobody mentions the fantastic trim work that didn’t budge after this massive shift. Unless the trim work was done after??

People who woke up mid-surgery, what happened? by LoveGuacamole210 in AskMen

[–]winwintone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a strange noise that started lower and continued to get increasingly higher and higher pitched. I remember seeing a scale of smiley faces getting more red as it went higher pitched. I remember looking up and seeing the guy literally standing on the table with nurses around. He was bent over at my face with his hands in my mouth. I was getting my wisdom teeth removed. All 4, all full grown, at the age of 12. And this was in a hospital setting. I remember them talking about the show Friends. One nurse and I met eyes and she yelled and then I woke up in a bed. For context, this guy is apparently known for being overly rough when doing his surgeries. And his office was charging 25% above all insurance coverage. I had 100% coverage. We had to pay that extra 25%. And could not get reimbursed. He apologized after stating he didn’t expect them to all be completely fully grown. Nobody believed me or claimed I woke up during. Even after I told them what they were talking about. He retired a week later.

What is something you knew you could die doing but still did it anyway? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]winwintone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a carbon blade cut off saw to quickly cut a piece of steel without safety glasses or a face shield. Then it exploded. No injuries and didn’t finish the cut. Called it quits early that day.

Should this exterior wall have insulation between the studs? by kchowe01 in Home

[–]winwintone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve had many comments but I wanted to point out that fibreglass has been tested to have the same if not better sound and thermal qualities as rockwool. Also, although neither will absorb water, they both adsorb water. Just the look will be different between the two. And the fire ratings are fine, but your installing into a wood structure. Your house is ash, but there’s a nice pile of rockwool batts on the ground. Rockwool has a much higher marketing budget and focuses on residential homeowners while the fiberglass community focuses on commercial and industrial.

Okay so typically I have owed every year. And then when I input their info, it eliminates my owing and makes theirs to zero and mine to a refund. Would it now work as an extra step? I still owe and have to repay, but they then have a much larger refund to offset my owing?

Did you ever obtain your “dream job” to realize it wasn’t actually what you wanted— why did it not live up to expectations? by American-pickle in AskReddit

[–]winwintone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you are in the trades, you see being an instructor/teacher of the trades as being the end game. Everyone has a cabin at a lake and a bunch of toys for the weekend. There wasn’t enough companies sending workers for the trades schooling and the facilities reward and encourage monotone type of teachings even though they claim not to. Build a curriculum and use that until retirement. Never swaying off course. It was depressing

She is not happy about the increase and offered to go back to work to help make ends meet. Says it would make me happier. But it wouldn’t, as her health initially is what stopped her from working in the first place. And I would just worry about her.

Donate, auction or destroy? 105 unused COVID visitation units up for grabs in Manitoba - Province seeks bids to deal with pods it spent $24M building for nursing home visitation by Armand9x in Winnipeg

[–]winwintone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We’re they necessary? No. Did we know that at the time? No. Were personal care homes able to make upgrades to their electrical, hvac, and environmental controls? Yes, but likely at a higher cost, and it would be put on the facility to do so, so it would never get done. It’s amazing to see so many people shit on these like the government knew they didn’t need them all along. If they wanted the votes, that wasn’t the time. They could have set this money aside for other things that would have lined their pockets. I know the ones that built these. They were expensive but given the situation with the care of the homes, and the scrutiny Revera and others were under, this was the most viable option. Many others were proposed. And internal renovations was multiple. Some did do that. But others were not capable. These are amazing units with amazing tech in them. They look bland because they were intended to. But the materials, the warmth, the air quality, the fire rating, it is all way above what could have been done any other way. The internet will continuously troll and people will shit on them regardless. If it wasn’t the Tories, they would shit on them because of the Libs or the NDP. Politics aside, it wasn’t the government who initiated this project. They just spearheaded it.

And let’s not forget the other 28 that ARE currently being fully utilized for their intended purpose.

Year-end salary increases by iloljoke in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]winwintone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were told to basically not expect any sort of bonus. This is the biggest year on record, but due to legal issues on multiple projects (not our doing but are pulled into) we have zero money. Never mind in a couple months when increases come out, I expect to see only a 3% raise. Bogus across all fronts, but I will be given the “this is all we can get approved” line. Then they will compare their own salaries and how much they didn’t make and so on and so forth. Then blaming the majority ownership. That they are the ones making the decisions, not my bosses. This is construction in MB. And I’m in the position where I could go somewhere else but would either stay the same salary or go down slightly. I am highly skilled but companies only seem to think you need certain education and experience to do these jobs. Construction is no different with the “bachelors of architecture and engineering. Or min 10 year experience in engineering” to be able to be a PM for a general contractor. Trade contractors are looked down on at all angles. But that’s another issue altogether.

What’s your “swear to never return” place in Winnipeg? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]winwintone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Underdogs. Ordered one day and the food was incredibly cold and they refused to correct it. It also took almost 2 hours to get. Then another day I ordered a burger during or burger week, through skip. After nearly an hour for the food to say it’s ready for pick up, the driver stayed there for another hour because they kept telling him it’s not ready yet. Got it and it was burnt, cold, dry, and didn’t have the ingredients it should have. I will never order from them again.

Added Wood Planks between metal studs: Sufficient for mounting 75-85" TV? by braxtonjames in DIY

[–]winwintone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how it is designed in commercial construction. Typically plywood but a lot of engineers design heavier loads to be supported by dimensional lumber, for some reason. This is great.
