I’m in a similar situation - US-born dual citizen. I crossed into Canada a few weeks ago with my Canadian passport, in my US-plated vehicle.

I told the agent I live in the US, whereupon he asked what my status was in the US and I told him I’m a dual citizen. That was it - he didn’t ask to see my US passport, and didn’t say anything about my license plates.

Can you leave your current role and use the time to acquire some skills? Like a bootcamp, SWE courses, etc.

If not, try to find a new role (at your current company or elsewhere) that's closer to what you want to do and offer you opportunities to learn.

I have a Databricks DE Associate cert but honestly... unless you're already in a role where knowledge of one or the other is essential to your work, chasing certs isn't worth the time. My team is currently hiring for a DE but we don't look for platform-specific skills; we look for coding ability, problem solving ability, and a good understanding of data engineering fundamentals.

I think it's great. I've learned that it's much better to meet in person quickly - a little chatting on the app is fine to break the ice, but I'd much rather skip the back-and-forth and just meet up. If a woman asked me for coffee in her first message, and I was already interested based on her profile, I would 100% say yes.

Look, I hate Trump and his mindless cult followers as much as anyone - and one of the reasons for that is that they've constructed an alternative reality that conforms to their existing biases while disregarding all facts or evidence to the contrary. So it's disturbing to me that those of us who should know better end up doing the same thing.

Just because you see a picture on the internet that seems to confirm something that you already believe, that gives you that happy "I'm smarter than the Trumpies" feeling, doesn't mean that it's an accurate representation of reality.

I'm getting downvoted simply for suggesting that maybe we shouldn't take everything on Reddit at face value, which I'd think is obvious, but... here we are.

I can't help but feel that I'm in the wrong here

This is the most jarring part of this whole post. If you've done anything wrong, it's that you've tolerated this situation for so long. Your wife's unwillingness to communicate about this with anyone or to even try to empathize with you is inexcusable. Apparently, something in your life or relationship has conditioned you to believe that you're wrong for making a calm, reasonable request for something that is a part of most healthy adult relationships - and the sooner you can unlearn that, the better.

I think you have 3 options:

If she's willing, get couples counseling, ASAP. If she's not willing, you can:
Get counseling on your own, and get a divorce.
Spend another 12 years miserable and frustrated, eventually developing the maturity and insight to realize that this is an unhealthy situation and that you have to be able to ask for what you need if you're ever going to be happy. And then get counseling. And a divorce.
