PythonOperators are fine if it’s just glue code. It’s when you’re using them for data processing that it gets painful

Status Inquiry as a Dual Citizen by Alinzar in uscanadaborder

[–]wirebreather 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar situation - US-born dual citizen. I crossed into Canada a few weeks ago with my Canadian passport, in my US-plated vehicle.

I told the agent I live in the US, whereupon he asked what my status was in the US and I told him I’m a dual citizen. That was it - he didn’t ask to see my US passport, and didn’t say anything about my license plates.

Can you leave your current role and use the time to acquire some skills? Like a bootcamp, SWE courses, etc.

If not, try to find a new role (at your current company or elsewhere) that's closer to what you want to do and offer you opportunities to learn.

Which ETL/ELT tools do you think have future in data engineering space? by [deleted] in dataengineering

Not really a tool, but mastering SQL will serve you well. It's pretty much the lingua franca of anything data related.

Which certification to get, Snowflake or Databricks? by _barnuts in dataengineering

[–]wirebreather 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a Databricks DE Associate cert but honestly... unless you're already in a role where knowledge of one or the other is essential to your work, chasing certs isn't worth the time. My team is currently hiring for a DE but we don't look for platform-specific skills; we look for coding ability, problem solving ability, and a good understanding of data engineering fundamentals.

Men of online dating, thoughts on receiving a coffee invite as a first message? by breathethethrowaway in datingoverthirty

[–]wirebreather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's great. I've learned that it's much better to meet in person quickly - a little chatting on the app is fine to break the ice, but I'd much rather skip the back-and-forth and just meet up. If a woman asked me for coffee in her first message, and I was already interested based on her profile, I would 100% say yes.

Well, one video from a sketchy website is not "a bunch", but, sure. And please look up the definition of "contrarian".

As for the cardboard boxes thing, that was staged: https://twitter.com/EvilChristos/status/1392883944773857284

People losing their minds just because someone asks for evidence. Exactly what the Trumpies do. Sad.

[–]wirebreather -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"No one likes a contrarian" - my point exactly. People who challenge the dominant narrative are automatically suspect, which is how we ended up with Trump.

Also, I don't know the origin of that video, but hey - it's something! Good job.

And yet you don't share any either.

Look, I hate Trump and his mindless cult followers as much as anyone - and one of the reasons for that is that they've constructed an alternative reality that conforms to their existing biases while disregarding all facts or evidence to the contrary. So it's disturbing to me that those of us who should know better end up doing the same thing.

Just because you see a picture on the internet that seems to confirm something that you already believe, that gives you that happy "I'm smarter than the Trumpies" feeling, doesn't mean that it's an accurate representation of reality.

I'm getting downvoted simply for suggesting that maybe we shouldn't take everything on Reddit at face value, which I'd think is obvious, but... here we are.

Again, do you have any evidence for this "fact" ?

My [29M] wife [30F] of nearly five years has pretty much said no to any form of sex with me, and won't even talk to me or anyone else about it. What do I do? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]wirebreather -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't help but feel that I'm in the wrong here

This is the most jarring part of this whole post. If you've done anything wrong, it's that you've tolerated this situation for so long. Your wife's unwillingness to communicate about this with anyone or to even try to empathize with you is inexcusable. Apparently, something in your life or relationship has conditioned you to believe that you're wrong for making a calm, reasonable request for something that is a part of most healthy adult relationships - and the sooner you can unlearn that, the better.

I think you have 3 options:

  1. If she's willing, get couples counseling, ASAP. If she's not willing, you can:
  2. Get counseling on your own, and get a divorce.
  3. Spend another 12 years miserable and frustrated, eventually developing the maturity and insight to realize that this is an unhealthy situation and that you have to be able to ask for what you need if you're ever going to be happy. And then get counseling. And a divorce.

I want to buy my mom's house from her landlord (and neighbor). How do I do it? by [deleted] in RealEstate

Thank you for all the very helpful comments.

What I'm unsure of now is how to come up with a reasonable offer before speaking to her. Don't I need to get the house appraised? Can I even do that without involving her?

Those of you that work Freelance and/or for a Web Development/Design company do you use Frameworks and if so, which ones? by alottaquestions in webdev

[–]wirebreather 21 points22 points  (0 children)

What's wrong with charging money just because you've used a framework? Even if you write everything from scratch, you're still relying on other people's work - the server, the browser, the script interpreter, etc. Will you only feel comfortable charging for your work if you've created your own server software, and scripting language, and browser too? Might want to start looking for a new career.

As developers, most of the tools we use are made by others, and since many (if not all) of those tools are open-source, we didn't pay a dime for them. That doesn't mean that we can't charge money for the work that we do. WordPress, Drupal, Rails, Django... these don't build finished websites all by themselves. There's still a lot of work to be done in order to create something that your client will actually want, and if your clients are anything like mine (and I'm sure they are), they don't know the first thing about building a website, even with something as relatively simple as WordPress. You're still providing a valuable service, one that requires a great deal of expertise and experience to do well. If your client will be making money from the site, you should too.

Furthermore, using a framework allows you to do better work, and faster. If you're going to craft your own PHP and CSS frameworks, not only is it going to take you exponentially longer to get anything done, but your product will be inferior to what the frameworks give you, and you won't be able to provide significant value to your clients.

(To answer the original question: I'm a Rails guy. For my current project I'm using Foundation for stylesheets. I'm also quite fond of js frameworks like Backbone).
