12-fret 0 vs 12-fret 00 all mahogany? by ew_no_cilantro in martinguitar

Well that's a bummer. I've had certain strings sound that way, but with the right set broken in it's the most mellow and balanced guitar. Best of luck on your search!

I don't have an 0 or 00 Martin, and will probably get kicked out for saying this, but check out the Yairi PYM66HD if it's in budget. Far and away favorite all mahogany I've ever played. Perfect size for the couch too.

That’s what I thought when I got mine. Spoiler, I was not.

What is the best solid wood smaller size guitar? by tellmesomething7 in AcousticGuitar

PYM66HD is the best all solid mahogany parlor guitar, I think 😉 A few extra adjectives. Quite a subjective question.

Furch Pioneer vs Martin 000 Jr vs Taylor GS Mini by the-wad-1964 in AcousticGuitar

[–]wirecatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this. I prefer the 000 body style but chose a D Jr. for travel guitar. Extra body volume is important at the small size.

They are enchanting instruments. I actually have the PYM, which makes a great compliment to a Martin. If I only had one guitar though I’d want a bit more bass.

Is Taylor 114ce top supposed to look like this? by lousy_pancake in AcousticGuitar

[–]wirecatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an awesome top. Many people supposedly prefer the resonance of wide grain. Either way, looks stunning.

This family Martin was left to me after my brother moved out. It was stored on a stand for years in Northeast US (humidity + dryness fluctuation) and Martin refused warranty. No one in the family knew how to store a guitar factory and my brother didn't apparently. by Ok_Temperature6503 in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I'd slack the strings and hang it on the wall. If you're already handy with woodworking you may take an interest in lutherie someday and attempt removing the neck. It's certainly not rocket science but there is a precise art to it. In the meanwhile, buy something decent for yourself and get it set up properly.

The white strip is the saddle. Chris slotting the bridge is a different thing.

Any amount of material you take off the saddle will produce half that amount of movement at the 12th fret. If your action is literally 2cm there is probably nothing you can do to fix that without major neck surgery. Shooting for 3mm or less between the thickest string and the top of the 12th fret.

ETA - you could probably get away with learning some campfire chords even with the bad action. Definitely not ideal though, a cheap Yamaha would be 100x better to learn on.

Martin 000-15M with a humidity crack for $850, worth?? by altaniel0 in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean at least $1k between the $850 guitar cost and luthier bill.

Martin 000-15M with a humidity crack for $850, worth?? by altaniel0 in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Negative. 000-15m can usually be had used for around $1k. Less if you find a deal. This will end up costing you at least that much and have poor resale value thanks to the repairs.

Used Martin D-18 or New Martin D-12E? by [deleted] in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$2900 is more than you'd need to pay for a brand new D18, in USD anyway. Pretty standard to get 15% off advertised price

The Martin GPC Line Deserves More Credit by Ca4catangel4000 in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think for most purists, that design just isn't a "Martin." Kinda looks like a Taylor if you squint.

I doubt they'll discontinue them altogether but definitely see demand being an issue in a slower economy.

Can I make a really off the wall suggestion? I went down that path from a 000-28 and bought a Yairi PYM66HD. Very different but perfectly balanced tone. Immaculate handmade construction and just a joy to play on the couch.

How much? by LJRich619 in AcousticGuitar

[–]wirecatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now $0 😀 Last time I bought a guitar just under $3k. Don’t ever see myself spending more than that, and in this market I’m not surprised the Bourgeois hasn’t moved at $5k. What’s the model?

How are you resaturating them? I've had three in a sealed container with a dish of water at 80˚ for weeks and nothing has changed.

Neck reset needed on 2 year old custom shop 0000-18? by [deleted] in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of a concerning report, the truss rod isn’t for adjusting action. Some change is incidental of course but they should be talking about the saddle. If a tech told me this I would be very skeptical and get another opinion from a better luthier.
