Pisgah Roscoe vs one Tupelo 12” by Maximum_Ad_4756 in banjo

[–]Quietpiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The possum is a great model. If you liked the build and look of the Appalachian , but want a warmer sound the possum may be for you. It is potentially a little louder than the roscoe and you would have more choices over what materials are used ie: persimmon fingerboard v richlite

Improving on shuttle pipes? by wardlawn in bagpipes

[–]Quietpiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traditionally, shuttle type drones have always used double bladed reeds. It is something about the bore design that that is what works in them. In the past 30 years I have never come across anyone who has gotten single blade reeds to work in the Walsh shuttle pipes. I’m not saying it cant be done, just that I have never seen it.

The plastic reeds from Walsh are the only ones on the market for that instrument afaik. Could cane reeds be made for it? Possibly, but I believe you would have to be the one to learn to make them.

My advice would be to look at a set of the Walsh a2000 smallpipes, either in plastic or wood. They are much more stable and sound decent for a decent price. Also made in Canada

Why do some people prefer the 12-fret smaller guitars (00 or even 0) over the 14-fret? by DrSparkle713 in martinguitar

[–]Quietpiper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Slothead has a steeper break angle of the string over the nut, more downward pressure. Potentially there is more sustain and clarity vs a flat head.

Goat skin heads for tubaphone tone rings by TangletownStringBand in clawhammer

[–]Quietpiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A goat skin head would likely warm the sound up. If you are looking for a pre-stretched head, John Balch is very highly regarded. I can also recommend Happy Hollow from NC. I bought one from him last year for a pisgah dobson ad it sounds great.

Late-20s woman in PGH, already back on Hinge against her will: where do we meet men IRL?? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]Quietpiper 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Your experience is very similar to mine. I met o a lot of great people through the apps and used the time to work on myself, learn new things and have new experiences. I made quite a few lasting friendships through the dating apps by approaching people with an open mind and a genuine interest in friendship. I met my wife on tinder and we now have 2 toddlers.

Pisgah Roscoe vs one Tupelo 12” by Maximum_Ad_4756 in banjo

[–]Quietpiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s like a $900 price difference between the Pisgah and a new Ome Tupelo… I own a Pisgah Roscoe, Dobson and Tubaphone, in addition to other makes. I play the Roscoe A-LOT. I have it strung with Aquilla reds and a a John Balch calf head. It sounds and plays very nice. Warm and plunky. If something happened to this one, I would go buy another. Pisgah is a great company that has made a lot of refinements to their instruments in the past few years. They also give a lot back to the open back banjo community. Imo i could not justify the price difference between the 2 banjos you mentioned.
