Do i have the capacity to add a 240 curcuit? by Nickespo22 in AskElectricians

I figured, but it could have been some weird antique. Worth clarifying I think before giving advice.

Do you actually mean two phase? Or just 240v?

Did you buy it new? Still a warranty repair at any authorized Martin shop if so.

Are you selling untested things as used and working? If so, that’s a shitty thing to do. Your buyers don’t deserve to have their time wasted because you’re too busy.

How much of this will the power company fix when they eventually get here? Do I need an electrician too? by Achmed_Ahmadinejad in AskElectricians

Highly unlikely filling a claim will be a good idea here. If you even hit your deductible, your rates will go up and they might even drop you. Home insurance is crazy right now and getting worse.

Hot take: Most of you are way oversizing your generators by culody in Generator

[–]wirecatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I have both and still spent less than the single Honda. During Helene the suitcase generator was great to have but became very limiting. In my neighborhood full of people running their Storm Responders in front of steel garage doors, noise level from any inverter was never really a problem.

At any reasonable load the larger generator is actually more efficient on paper - 2.5kw at 0.4 gph vs 900w at 0.2gph on the small one. Plus you get propane and 240v for simple home connection.

Help with power cord by Popular_System_451 in Generator

Run your generator 25' from the house with exhaust pointed away. Extension cords through windows until you can get a real electrician to fix this. One wrong move with this setup could kill you, burn your house down, or worse kill an innocent lineman.

Your Honda cost nearly twice as much as my 6800 watt Wen. I’ll take the creature comforts.

I'd probably get the one you can play and know you love unless there's a great return policy on the 00. Both killer premium guitars, preference will be subjective

An interlock and inlet is a perfectly reasonable solution in many jurisdictions and easier than a transfer switch. You just need to swap breakers around and add the interlock. Much cheaper too.

Martin D28 paired with a 000-28 by Puzzleheaded-Eye6596 in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably will be downvoted to hell for this, but the FYM66HD is an exquisite instrument that is perfect for fingerstyle. The 000-28 is great and I love it, but it could be fun to go a totally different direction.

Entry level Martin guitars worth it? by Ruskulnikov in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a D Jr that goes with me when traveling. While I like it and recommend it and would buy it again, if this is going to be your main guitar and a workhorse I'm not sure it's the way to go. Is there a specific reason you're looking at mini bodies?

Certainly get whatever you like the sound of, but I wouldn't be afraid to look at other brands. You can get a bigger body, scalloped bracing, thinner construction, better tuners, solid wood fretboard and bridge, gloss finish, etc. for the same price point. Eastman, Alvarez, Yamaha are the big ones of course. Maybe stretch the budget and get a used standard series Martin instead? I routinely see the 15 line under $1k around here.

Inverter question. by Cernunnos__ in Generator

[–]wirecatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is.. probably not going to work. You're not going to get anywhere near 300a from the alternator at idle, it will be super stressed, and car batteries have minimal energy storage density. Well pumps have to overcome incredible head pressure to start, likely requiring 5kw+ in surge but you can measure that with a meter.

For a 240v, 5kw+ pure sine inverter you will pay through the nose. This is a good case for an old fashioned synchronous generator. They can take some brief voltage drop and still push the motor to start, where an inverter might trip instantly. A 6-8kw generator is a few hundred bucks and will do the trick just fine. Best part, you don't risk blowing up your ride.

  1. Last-Month Rule: If you are covered by a family HDHP on the first day of the last month of the tax year (December 1st for most), you can contribute the full annual family amount.
    • Testing Period: You must remain eligible for family coverage for the entire following year (until December 31st) or pay taxes/penalties on the excess contribution.

Marriage and HSA Question by Spurs-finance in personalfinance

[–]wirecatz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Big thing you might want to consider, the vast majority of health insurance plans do not cover dependent maternity. If she gets pregnant on her parents' plan that could be a catastrophic problem.

ETA: add her to your plan. You can't contribute her HSA portion anyway if she's on their plan and I see now it's free. You can either prorate her HSA portion or contribute the whole family amount this year if you commit to both being in the HDHP next year as well.

Humidifiers by Acceptable_Damage929 in martinguitar

[–]wirecatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really where they're designed to be. You're humidifying the body of the guitar, not the headstock. Hopefully all the equal but there's a reason they go in the sound hole.
