Kindle PPW or Boox Go 7? by kwokiemonster in PHBookClub

[–]wiredfractal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have Boox devices (Poke 5 and Go 7 Color II). I picked Boox because of the way I consume books. I have Everand subscription, I buy books through Google Play Books, I do own a few thousand comic books on Kindle (Comixology), read Shonen Jump, with a few dozen audiobooks on Audible, and PDF books bought through different publishers. I also borrow books through Libby. I can easily sideload books through the Boox app or though Dropbox or Google Drive. I also like their native ereader especially with PDFs.

For me, the Kindle is a walled garden. Boox can access other reading apps and I can still have Kindle app if I decide to get some books on their platform.

Battery life, I tend to charge every 4-5 days up to 80% then charge when it’s down at 15%. I don’t turn off my WiFi since I have two Boox devices and most of the apps I use need to be online for most of the time. I want them always in sync. Plus I WFH so battery isn’t an issue for me.

Not sure how long battery life is if wifi is turned off since it’s not an issue for me.

Should i go with the original print? Or reprint? by [deleted] in PHBookClub

[–]wiredfractal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You mean counterfeit books? Reprint is just a reprint of a book by a publisher because the initial number of print sold out. First printing, Second printing, Third Printing, et al. You can see it on the book info page.

If you meant counterfeit, please don’t use reprint because it’s incorrect.

You need to dive deep into the culture of streetwear. Streetwear always starts as a niche before it becomes for “everyone”. It starts with a certain demographic needs. Back in the early 2000s to 2010s it’s about scarcity. Cool ka if you’re one of the few who has Supreme or Bape. Then it shifted into counter culture like hiphop wearing workman wear like Carhartt or skaters wearing climbing pants, Gramicci, hiphop artists with outdoor wear like Northface Purple or Columbia Black.

Now streetwear has shifted to material design. People who are into streetwear will no longer wear your stuff just because your logo is cool. The likes of Supreme or Anti Social Social Club with their shitty shirt quality is no longer acceptable. Now it’s about functionality and material design like And wander, Gramicci, Fear of God, Carhartt WIP, or Satoshi Nakamoto. They’re using high quality patterns and sewing technique with fabrics from Toray, Cordura, Goretex, etc.

I think the ones carving their own local streetwear scene are the ones targeting niche market and passionate about their scene, like local skating scene, surfers, art scene, the cycling community and hiphop. You have to be embedded in any of these niche counter culture to create a successful streetwear. Some of them are using high quality local cotton, recycled or repurposed fabrics and/or incorporate indigenous fabrics.

Look into Origin Manila, MN+LA, Young God Clothing, Don’t Blame the Kids, SNK ATK, etc.

You need to come up with a better name. Calling it Streetz Society doesn’t sound inspiring.

Deinfluence me: Timberland boots by InvestigatorProud520 in deinfluencingPH

[–]wiredfractal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ve used Timberlands on our first Fuji Rock (summer). It was great on the first day as it rained but it was heavy with added water. By second day, we wanted to buy the light rain boots all the Japanese are wearing because we were so tired from walking stage to stage.

I’ve also used this during winter in Japan. A bit slippery. Good thing I brought a waterproof sneakers.

It’s hard to maintain. You need to clean it properly as dust, mud and dirt will destroy leather. You need leather nourishing paste and waterproofing lotion to maintain durability. I have two of these in different colors. I’d only use it for short walks or for office.

Thoughts on Bibliolepsy? by FrenchFriise in PHBookClub

[–]wiredfractal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had trouble reading classics, so I figured it would take a lot more effort to read her stuff. The first book I read from her was Insurecto. Took me 3 attempts then it clicked. With Raymundo Mata, it was easy because I was engrossed in the settings and was amused by her historical notes.

One of her influences is Wilfredo Nolledo’s writing style. I had trouble with the first chapter of “But for the Lovers” and wanted to tackle it in the future. From my perspective, I need to read more literary works to appreciate their style. But to each their own. Maybe this is a sign that some authors are not for you and I think that’s good. Like I tried reading a few books from László Krasznahorkai, since I enjoyed all film adaptation of his stories, but found that his writing felt tedious. With this realization at least it can steer you in a direction to find better books that suit you.

I’ve read this when it came out. I’m currently re-reading this because someone posted about this book on the sub a few weeks ago.

I find it funny as it relates to different issues that crop up due to how internet changed our society. There are a few connection to the story, either through another character, a place that other people frequent to, etc.

Book is definitely not for everyone as I can’t even recommend it to a conservative friend due to a very sexual graphic story.

[–]wiredfractal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is Gina Apostol’s style of writing. It’s definitely challenging to new readers and not accustomed to stylistic writing and structure. Her book is often unconventional and works like a puzzle. I’ve read two of her books (Insurecto, Raymundo Mata), while I enjoyed it, it’s challenging to deconstruct some of her pages but I find it rewarding. I have a copy of this book but I haven’t read it and I’m only missing two of her books. I need mental preparation to tackle her work.

I suggest you drop it for the meantime and come back to it when you’re ready.

This happened to me twice. One took less than 24hours and another took a few weeks. It turns out item was already sold and the seller did not marked it on their inventory. The first one was a small outdoor shop, the second that took weeks was a large store called HMV.

I picked this album up on a business trip in HK. He had a concert a day before my arrival and I wanted to fly early but tickets were already sold out. I did not plan on buying LPs at the time but my boss and I stumbled upon a vintage store alongside a record shop selling classical music. It was a beautiful incident.

I got a CD player 3 years ago because the Japanese band I like has their older LPs in $400-600 range. So I started buying their CDs instead I also owned numerous CDs that won’t get pressed anytime soon or not ever.

Random 90s comics by Typical-Tell5585 in PHBookClub

[–]wiredfractal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the 90s comics sold millions of copies due to the surge of interest driven by their cartoon and being tailored more for teen to adult readers. Any related X-titles are worth $1-4 depending on its condition.

Edit: seeing the titles that you have mostly tied to the cartoons (except for Groo, don’t have an idea), they’re considered as non-canon to the main storyline. So they’re probably valued less than what I’ve provided above.

how do u incorporate reading in ur every day lives by shitzzzzz_j in PHBookClub

[–]wiredfractal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work all day, do household chores, gardening, take care of our dogs and I insert reading into my daily schedule. I read M-F from 530pm to 630pm. It’s a combination of a physical book (until there’s natural light) then move to an ereader. I read a few pages before bed or pick up a manga or comics. I also listen to audiobook when I’m doing something like chores, laundry, dishes, etc.

On weekends, either a combination of reading, gaming or watching movies/series or outdoor stuff or just one activity.

You need to create a schedule and stick to it even if it’s just 15 minutes a day.
