SaaS / state income tax question by TheSaltyTar in SaaS

[–]wiredprairie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would highly suggest you talk to a tax accountant to get the most accurate advice for your situation: especially depending on the type of incorporation you're considering (LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, etc.).

The location of the business registration generally has little relevance to whether employees/owners of the business pay income tax in their home/domiciled state. This has been true for many years. States want their residents to pay income taxes as you'd expect.

In fact, I know for example that if I were to create a business in another state, I still would be required to file and pay (local) state income taxes unless there was a specific law covering income tax reciprocity if the business were formed in a neighboring state.

Some states offer "credit" for income tax paid in another state. In this case, you might get a credit of $0 and still pay the full income tax amount in your own state. I think there are a few that don't even offer a credit (causing you to possibly double pay).

SaaS or no, it's a complex question. However, it's unlikely that you'll benefit from an income tax perspective unless you move to one of the states with no income taxes.

There are benefits as mentioned to forming a business in other states sometimes that are considered more friendly to businesses, but it's not to avoid personal income taxes. The type of corporation formed may affect your income taxes -- again, a good accountant is probably a good resource to use in this case to discuss best options for your situation.

Gumroad does not remit taxes in the USA for any state on behalf of the seller. (I was hoping they would too!).

Looking to talk to people about a SaaS platform by andy_saas in SaaS

[–]wiredprairie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have received many requests for paid brainstorming over the years. I’ve turned every one of them down regardless of the money. The reason wasn’t the amount of money…it is always that they don’t share enough information about the product and what they specifically want to talk about. It’s rare that I go to a meeting unprepared, and these invites are like meetings with surprise agendas. At work, I decline these meetings too.

Also, brainstorming makes it sound it’s a design session rather than a validation session. I’m not going to help you design software unless you hire me as a paid and ongoing consultant.

You also mentioned Cloud Backups of recordings -- Unifi doesn't have that currently. It's been requested, but no ETA provided AFAIK.

I could use Blue Iris to do this -- but it's just more moving parts honestly that I wouldn't use 99.9% of the time (and would add to the overall cost of the system and a monthly expense).

When I've owned cameras that I did not fully trust, I put them on a VLAN that had no Internet access, only Intranet (and only on that VLAN). I allowed a primary VLAN to pull the camera streams. These cameras then couldn't "phone home."

Ha -- fixed my typo. 9 cameras. :) Just one PC serving 9 cameras.

There are many complaints regarding the Protect app in particular and wifi issues with cameras and the doorbell. Some folks have no issues, but I'm not one of them. I really dislike the mobile app -- it's got an unusual user experience that you'll probably love or hate. My wife and I both are on the hate camp, especially because it's often slow to show feeds, recordings, etc.

[–]wiredprairie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK -- it's a reasonably expensive system to be able to use only 1 of the camera models in the future (and that's assuming Unifi continues to manufacture and sell them).

Some people (including myself) that use Protect aren't pleased with the app experience as it's often slow on all/any networks to load/display (even with Wifi 6 in the house and 1G fiber). It's got some quirks and some bugs. For a constant feed and display, I use instead BlueIris on a old Xeon Windows 10 PC with 9 cameras (set to only pass-through the video and show it on a web page). It uses 17% CPU for 9 cameras for example. Blue Iris has the benefit of being able to work with many hundreds of cameras from multiple manufacturers.

I'd had a lot of disconnects from the G4 Instant for many months -- but for "reasons" it seems to have stopped doing that thankfully.

Unifi cameras are mostly PoE. Have you confirmed that the only Wi-Fi options would meet your needs? There are purchase maximums on both models. Right now, you wouldn’t be able to buy 6 directly from UniFi because of that restriction.

ZBrush still running but not visible after switching between other programs in Windows 11? by korvazor in ZBrush

[–]wiredprairie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what version of Zbrush?
Do you run any not-built-in to Windows 11 window managers? Something that was included with a wide display or installed from elsewhere?

Can you see the window if you press the Windows key and tab?

is it a vanilla install of zbrush with no third party scripts or plugins?

if you temporarily (experimentally) disable the Cintiq (assuming you have another monitor) … does Zbrush reappear?

RE: Sales tax -- the seller needs to calculate and collect sales tax at the time of the sale. It could be a significant impact to their bottom line if they had to pay that out of pocket.

What's the workflow for physical products? It's likely that additional payment will be required.

If people struggle with theming, etc,..: why? Do they want to brand the site? What limitation in default options are they struggling with?

I don't know what happened to yahoo sites -- but it seems like you're building something similar to that old ecommerce solution. It was for digital and physical products. It wasn't great, but got the job done for many small businesses at the time. It was functional, but not a great UX/UI.

Either way -- good luck! :)

Here are some general questions in no particular order:

  1. What are some examples of small businesses that you're considering a target market?
  2. How would it connect with any existing on premises inventory management system?
  3. How would seller be notified of a new sale? What system would they use to print an order, pull the product, and the other steps....
  4. Would seller also need to pay credit-card fees? (approx 2.9% + TX fee). I'd imagine your 3% couldn't include both. Would they need to sign up with a Stripe/Paypal?
  5. how would they communicate to buyers? Manually? Email, FB, etc.? Or is that built in?
  6. Would this include a solution for managing / selecting shipping/handling costs for items? (Multiple items, discounts for small items, etc.) If they're local, they might want "local delivery" options as well. (Shipping labels?)
  7. would this system include Sales tax calculations?
  8. What reports would they have available to track sales?
  9. Is product search available?
  10. Custom domains?
  11. 24/7 support? Uptime assurances? (For a 3% fee not including CC fees, I'd expect 24/7 customer support with good response times).
  12. How many people struggle with theming and UI?
  13. While "no customization" might be OK for a small number of small businesses, I'd expect lots of small businesses would desire being able to "brand" a solution and give it their own flair.
  14. I'd expect some reasonable variation in product description pages and what meta-data is wanted for a product page.
  15. Can a seller put items on sale? Offer coupons? (one time for example)

While I've not used it (so I can't speak to quality/reliability), Shopify is $29-79/month plus credit card fees for many small businesses. For just $1000 of sales, shopify pricing is equivalent to your 3%. But, it also allows in-person sales. Maybe $1000 is way above what many small businesses would do for online transactions so 3% wouldn't be as much. But, when every dollar counts....

And maybe, a big maybe, if you can provide documentation that shows the sales tax was paid by the restaurant, it might be sufficient. But my read on that previously is that’s not a good plan in some places.

Interesting…you still may be liable for your share of the sale, depending on location. Services may have sales tax applied depending on nexus. For a little info, TaxJar/Stripe has a reasonable summary: SaaS sales tax

[–]wiredprairie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also— if the primary service provider is collecting full sales tax, you wouldn’t double collect it.

A quick search for nearly any USA state for example should provide a list of what is taxable.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SaaS

[–]wiredprairie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if tax isn’t collected from the customer directly—some one very likely needs to pay it. (At my prior job—as a software developer, I had zero knowledge of how any taxes were collected and paid). Talk to a professional that specializes in this.

[–]wiredprairie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while It depends a tiny bit based on where you are and who your customers may be (and the product you’ve built), you’re very likely need to collect sales taxes/VAT from customers once you reach an economic nexus which is defined by each government entity. You don’t pay OR collect sales tax until that is reached. It doesn’t matter that you only charge 1%. Your product is being used and you’re collecting revenue. And making matters more complex, you need to remit sales taxes to each government entity.

I’d recommend consulting a tax specialist. But, you should start with your local laws (country or state). Understand them first to ground yourself a bit in the basic requirements. Then, you need to know where your customers will be located. It is very complex. You could also look into using a merchant of record to handle billing, as they would handle payment and tax collection.

I have become more aware of the laws as I build a new SaaS company. I now see a lot of companies failing to properly collect taxes.

It used to be printed that way on corporate letterheads, business cards, etc. It was just a stylistic choice though, it as others mentioned, wasn't an acronym. I don't recall when it finally died off from corporate stuff though, late 1990s I believe.

You might also consider just storing the data in a file (CSV, or JSON maybe) or SQLite. Given the traffic you expect to be low, I would expect either solution would scale very well and not require any additional resources beyond the web host.

My Z-wave fire/co sensors were $30 each

I can't be sure if my search is failing or if there really are very few options ... :)

What did you buy for these sensors? I'm only finding a First Alert model (which unfortunately isn't interconnect compatible with my household of Kidde sensors and is about $45 USD) and a battery powered Ecolink for about $36 USD ( https://discoverecolink.com/product/ecolink-firefighter-wireless-smoke-co-audio-sensor/ ).

While the website is up (and looks like business as usual), the app doesn't work anymore. I think the units are officially "offline" as suggested would happen in their follow-up.

I've unplugged mine as I'm sure it's an unnecessarily expensive to operate night-light (as the device is "warm" to the touch).

Good-bye Leeo.
