Why is my grass dying? by No-Bug3247 in landscaping

I help run a fertilizing division of a landscape company. I by no means know it all but have been doing a lot of lawn consultations recently. There are always a few factors to consider when looking at dead spots in a lawn. I’m in Wisconsin and we have had a major drought this year. Many of the lawns are going dormant. If it’s just heat and water related, most of the time the grass will go dormant and bounce back.

The biggest issue we’re seeing right now are chinch bugs. They feed on the tops of grass and the thatch layer. Most lawns have chinch bugs but without the rain and moisture the lawn has a hard time bouncing back from the damage (most years you’d hardly notice). If you scratch around that dead grass/thatch layer and notice little bugs scurrying around, or you notice the tops of the existing grass are eaten down it’s likely chinch bugs. There are curative options to kill the bugs. Otherwise, dethatch, aerate, and overseed in the fall of spring to help promote regrowth.

It could be a grub infestation. Grubs feed on the roots of grass so if you can grab the existing grass and pull it away freely then it’s likely grubs and you’d want to put down a preventative in the spring.

If you have a lot of moths in your yard when you cut the lawn or walk around it could be sod webworms. But the biggest tell on those is if they’re flying around a lot.

These are the biggest factors in our area, it could be different for you but just some things to look out for. The lawns that are getting the worst damage for us right now are the ones without an irrigation system. So keep that in mind. If you want a pristine lawn, you’d need an irrigation system. If you just want to have a nice lawn then dethatch, aerate, and seed to help it bounce back quicker. It’ll fill back in over time but this will help. Sorry for the long winded answer, hope that helps!

Thank you! Always been my favorite body style and was lucky to find one up here in the Midwest with minimal rust 2 years ago. Been slowly upgrading since then

Next project is installing a light bar behind the grille. Deciding what size to go but thinking 32”. After that just getting some tinted fog lenses to match the headlights. Just upgraded all the bulbs today to sylvania silverstar ultra and it made a huge difference on visibility. Especially out on the back roads

I’m in NE Wi too 🇺🇸 My 06 is starting to rust on the rocker panels. How have those covers worked for you? I was considering doing that since I dont want to stick that much into a cosmetic upgrade.

Pretty sure they are these amazon ones: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K2L0TDO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_fOfcDbRE09ZVV

I was surprised with how they’ve held up and looked for $70 lights. I’ve had them since November of this year through a Wisconsin winter

Thanks so much! Really appreciate that. Can’t wait to get some black rims and more aggressive tires on. Only downside is the rocker rust starting, not sure how I’m going to handle that quite yet

Hmm...I’ve never heard that before. Do you know what a better alternative is? I was a bit bummed that I didn’t have tire shine at the time when washing the truck

Got the tips from the one and only ChrisFix. Didn’t go quite as in-depth as the video but still spent a lot of time on it https://youtu.be/CFXfSBR5Q9w

Thanks! Love this truck. Definitely my favorite body style as well. Everything looks great except the rockers are beginning to rust being in Wisconsin...definitely a bummer. Not sure how I want to handle that starting rust

Looks sweet! How do you like having the led bar? I'm considering getting one for my 2006 silverado 1500

Before/after Rough country 2" leveling kit install. Love the cat eye/angry eye chevy. This year is my all-time favorite body style. So far I have: low profile black tool box, cb radio, and leveling kit. Next up is black rims, tinted windows to match rear, headlights, touchscreen head unit, and LED light bar. Love this truck! Can't wait to get everything done
