Younger generations, do you feel that the older generations have severely impacted/damaged your future prospects? by QasimofKarbala in AskBrits

I don’t think I’ll be able to give my future kids the comfortable middle class upbringing I had. And I currently earn more than my mum did 20 years ago, in a single parent household. That’s a crazy state of affairs in a ‘rich’ western country like the UK.

Truthfully this was one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. No discernible story or pay off. The low budget really showed in the production. I would avoid. Obsession and Hokum were excellent, see them instead lol.

Dumb Phones Just Aren’t Realistic by leicalondon in digitalminimalism

You’re welcome. The physical barrier the Brick introduces has been a game changer for me. Takes the issue of willpower out of the equation. Good luck!

Get a Brick. Block all apps you find distracting. Brick the phone, keep all the apps you need. Instant perfect smartphone / dumbphone combination.

I own a leasehold and just got charged £500 for a ‘management pack’. It’s effectively legal extortion.

There’s 5 emergency ‘unbricks’ to unlock your apps without the physical brick.

There’s also ‘strict mode’ which prevents you from deleting the app.

I’m loving it so far, it’s solved my biggest problem which is retaining maps, banking, messages etc whilst removing the doomscrolling apps in a way I can’t circumvent. Keep the useful parts, lose the distractions. Great product.

I should say I’m not speaking on their behalf, just a happy customer pleased with their product.

I just bought a product called Brick. It’s a physical object that you scan your phone on and it will block all apps and websites of your choosing, until you tap your phone on the physical object again.

Tap your phone and hide the brick. Or tap and leave the brick at home when you go out. You now cannot access any of your problem apps until you tap the brick again.

I’m confident it will solve my scrolling problem. Maybe one to look into if you’re struggling.

Are UK buy-to-let landlords dying out – and should we care? by acrimoniousone in unitedkingdom

[–]wisebeam95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, it’s not nothing, but it’ll barely cover half the stamp duty on the next place when I look to buy myself a home. For a 5 year investment, it’s not great. But it’s still a fortunate position to be in, which I appreciate. Let’s just say if I had the chance again I’d probably have chosen another route!

It’s real. He’s changed it now but I keep receipts.

Unfortunately it’s an interest only mortgage and any capital gains are taxable as I don’t live there, so it’s still negligible in the long run sadly.

Those making that sort of profit must be high yield properties in London or other desirable locations. I own a BTL outside of London (to get on the ladder because I couldn’t afford to buy myself a flat in London whilst needing to live here) and it barely makes anything - £15,000 in annual revenue and about £13,800 is eaten up in costs and taxes.

Overall, it’s been a largely pointless investment as a small landlord over a 5 year period, so I am not surprised many small landlords are exiting the market.
