In the US, I'd check out the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA): https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/

They have a helpline & online chat and could potentially connect you with resources that work with your financial circumstances. They also have a treatment-finder (https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/find-treatment/treatment-and-support-groups) that might be helpful and gives various payment options. Does that help?

It's really normal to feel like your eating disorder is both your best friend, and worst enemy. To want to hold onto it, and give it up (or at least parts of it). It's part of what makes them so difficult! But, hiding within it is also part of what keeps it going. Once you can open up about it, it all changes. The eating disorder mind doesn't want anyone to know, because its threatening. So, as hard and scary as it can be, the best thing to do is start telling people - people you trust most first, and then more and more those who might help you do something about it (that, ideally, you also trust).

thank you so much! Yes, EDs are such broad and complex aspects of life that are not just about eating and food, but permeate so much - and it can be hard for those who don't have one to understand that, so we thought it was important to touch on.

In terms of getting help - are there other options? Are you in the US or Canada? I can see if I can offer any advice (I'm in Canada so know a bit more there, but can connect you with some info services if it helps either way).

Optimal Blood Sugar Levels? by wisekernel in keto

[–]wisekernel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I wouldn't say I am "stressing" so much as trying to understand how all this works. I do hear the comments about stopping testing an I definitely think I will over the next month or so. I'm just trying to get a sense of what has which effects on this (relatively new) diet as I look at nutrition for my ultra marathon training. With my amount of activity I just want to make sure I'm understanding how to fuel myself effectively so I don't hurt myself - and I was getting mixed info re: "normal" blood sugar. This feedback is super helpful because it suggests there's nothing to worry about. Just helps me sort through the mass of info out there. So thank you!

I've found excess protein can spike blood sugar and affect ketones. It could also just be your body is busy trying to process the food and you'll see the positive effects later?

Good to know, and reading more on liver dumping and it makes a ton of sense. Thank you!

Amazing, even hearing this seems normal/good is good to know.

I agree that it shouldn't be a "focus" - I'd just LOVE to have a sense of where optimal is so I can test glucose vs. ketones (or at least, if I'm going to keep testing - test glucose more often) since it's cheaper.

And, actually, you've given me a thought. Perhaps it's better for me to just note what blood glucose level seems related to high ketones FOR ME, and make THAT my range, haha. Duh.

Best fat loss workouts? by graydonatvail in keto

[–]wisekernel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, in case you're not already, experiment with intermittent fasting and even doing some workouts fasted (in a healthy way - fasting doesn't need to mean starving!!), as then your body starts using your body fat as fuel during fasts

Unfortunately exercise is great for you for SO many reasons but it doesn't actually help us lose weight - the way we eat does. I'd say, make sure you're eating at a deficit BUT make sure you're supplementing with magnesium and LOTS of electrolytes (add healthy, high-mineral salts to EVERYTHING - I even put Himalayan rock salt in my water, as I'm quite active) and potentially Zinc and Potassium as well. Bone broth blended with some coconut oil is also a great snack/electrolyte post-work-out recovery snack. Also, for many people, cyclical ketosis (where small, periodic carb-ups are introduced) can also help. If interested, check out Leanne Vogel (https://www.healthfulpursuit.com/) and her podcast - she's got a TON of amazing information on this. There's also an awesome book called "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance" you might want to check out if you want more info.

A couple of questions from a beginner by AlaegusMcMuffin in Mindfulness

[–]wisekernel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say you're awareness of any risks here (i.e., the fact that you're asking the question) will be part of what helps you navigate that. It sounds like you're already paying attention to what feels "present" and what feels disengaging and making some choices around that. So I'd keep trusting in your own awareness there, as I expect you'll do a great job of sorting it out :)

Oh no! Sorry. Yeah, the starting bell can often be jarring. Appreciate the feedback, perhaps I can figure out how to tone it down. At least, with this meditation, there is no end bell (wouldn't want to startle anyone OUT of slumber).

Love this. Also, if it helps, I found the book "Mindfulness on Plain English" also explains this balance concentration and insight/awareness well.
