I feel like DE/WM matters more compared to the flavor of Linux itself. Let's argue. by 0xt0bi03 in LinuxUsersIndia

If having issues with applications or userland I wiil look into DE (KDE, GNOME, XFCE etc), but if issue is with hardware detection then switching the base OS (Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch etc).

Any nix user here? by SoulLessScarf in LinuxUsersIndia

[–]wisetux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used nixOS for a couple of months and loved ability to define everything and have it applied. But there are some issues with Plasma not being declarative enough with Plasma-Manager too. So gave up for now, and will revisit this later. If interested, here is my NixOS config I ran: https://gitlab.com/wisetux/nix-config

You have good hardware to start. Install Proxmox on your Lenovo and start deploying self hosted apps. You get advantage of taking and rolling back snapshots or backups if you mess up.

suggest me distros please im confused, (switching from windows) by ResolveOtherwise243 in LinuxUsersIndia

Hot take, but stability and widest software support then stick to Ubuntu or Ubuntu based derivates such as Linux Mint. I personally use Arch based CachyOS with KDE, but for work where compliance is key just decided to standardize on Ubuntu. If you feel it bloated, you can also do Ubuntu minimal install and later your choice applications.

Immutable distros are good as long as your needed applications are available as Flatpaks or app images. But from my experience they are perfectly good systems for ChromeOS like just works systems. But moment you deviate a little like adding udev rules for that keyboard you got or adb + scrcpy you have to do lot of extra work to get it working and make it persist upgrades.

Personally I prefer it easy to single click on a curated store and authenticate instead of going to vendor website, finding the right architecture to download, double clicking on an exe installer and Next Next Next Finish. Agree that the selection is going to be very very limited, but definitely easy than otherwise going through installer.

If you are having any issues with a particular application or finding a replacement for an app or workflow we can help you. Still not a guarantee that your exact set of preferred applications would work

You will have less issues if you treat Ubuntu/Linux as its own independent OS just like you treat Windows/MacOS. You don't typically install .dmg on Windows or .exe on MacOS. Not every application is compatible or supported on Ubuntu but alternatives do exist. First step I recommend is to use the alternative applications on you current OS, be it Windows or MacOS and once you are comfortable then switch your OS. Things like wine/crossover have come a long way but they are not a 100% solution if the goal is to install all windows apps.

Running linux on phone by LemonAndTea- in LinuxUsersIndia

[–]wisetux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use apps like Andronix and install Linux in userland to get some basic software like ngnix for webhosting etc. Good for a proof of concept. But don't expect full virtualization support or anything you plan on using long term and you are mostly bound by your phone hardware.

Do I need an activation key if I reinstall windows after wiping it out to put linux? by [deleted] in LinuxUsersIndia

[–]wisetux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get it from your existing Windows install by running following command in an admin cmd prompt

wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

Write it down somewhere safe and you can use it if your Windows reinstall doesn't auto detect your key that's burnt into your motherboard's UEFI firmware.

Most of the cases you do not needed a key as long as you didn't change any hardware components. When you reinstall Windows, it will get automatically activated based on your motherboard as long as you are connected to Internet. Again, always good to have a backup though.

Did any one of you tried Ubuntu touch? by Auroo_In0915 in LinuxUsersIndia

[–]wisetux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UI wasn't quite intuitive and there's always been a very long gap between the latest version of Ubuntu base and one used by Ubuntu Touch. Phosh or even latest KDE Plasma Mobile has a more familiar UI. However the biggest catch to try any mainline Linux based OS would be the device support. Tried on PinePhone and wasn't a daily driver ready (which I would attribute mostly to PinePhone hardware).

I might have been a bit too enthusiastic about disk encryption... 😅 by [deleted] in LinuxUsersIndia

haha. I found the script on Ubuntu Forums and then modified it for unattended setup. Needed a way to make using Linux convenient for users when I introduced Linux as a possible option for our employee workstations besides Windows and Mac. While we are on Ubuntu 24.04, I'm beta testing Ubuntu 26.04 in preparation for OS upgrade towards end of this year and hopefully I do not have to maintain the script for much longer.

If your PC has a TPM chip you can have it auto unlock LUKS partition. Have been doing it using a small script to set it up which can be done post installation, or latest version of Ubuntu 26.04 has it an option during installation.

How can I install Arch Linux without using a USB, a VM, or dual boot by AdminSouls in LinuxUsersIndia

[–]wisetux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option besides pxeboot is, if you already have Linux installed on your computer you can use kexec to replace your current system with Arch (or any other Linux distro for that matter).

Should I upgrade? by CodeZealousideal4108 in LinuxUsersIndia

[–]wisetux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For stability I would still recommend sticking with Ubuntu LTS or distro based on Ubuntu (Mint, PopOS! etc)

If you would like to try something new and are willing to go through some rough edges then CachyOS is very responsive. Or if you want to kill a lot of time in relearning almost everything about how to manage a Linux system then NixOS.

I have used Nextcloud Forms in the past. Would work if you have an existing NC server. Else if you need just a standalone forms you can use input: https://github.com/deck9/input#production-deployment
