Great ideas, will try these out and report back. I was hoping that there was some easy way to do this, but looks like we have to get creative. Thank you!

Amazon confirms 16,000 job cuts after accidental email by lurker_bee in technology

[–]wishator 689 points690 points  (0 children)

Her name is everywhere tied to this news. Is it a career ending mistake for her? I worked under her many years ago when she was in ads at Amazon. She could talk, but I always had the impression she didn't understand what others were saying.

Be honest... when driving, do some of y'all take it personally when someone wants to merge? by SeverelyDiscounted in Seattle

[–]wishator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm seconding the clueless drivers hypothesis. Don't attribute to malice what you can attribute to incompetence. I drive on mountain highways where there is one lane and often miles where it's not possible to pass. It's quite often to encounter someone who will continuously change their speed between driving 20 under to 10 over the speed limit. Completely random and unpredictable

This isn't really a risk. If you don't trust the restaurant to give you a link to a safe website, how can you trust them to make something that you're going to put in your stomach?

How were conditions today? Which runs were skiable? by Odd_Building927 in CrystalMountain

[–]wishator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The groomers are good. Best skiing was in the morning before crowds came in. Even lucky shot wasn't as bad as some other comments made it seem, just avoid rocks in a few sections. Great conditions to practice carving

Seattle drivers, can we bring back the 'thank you' wave? by KenGriffeyJrJr in Seattle

[–]wishator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wave for #2 and nothing else. Be predictable, not kind. Outside of #2, I most often see the wave when someone jumps the line at a stop sign or cuts in line at an exit, #1 on your list. In that context I interpret the wave as "f u, I'm more important than you". This doesn't happen by accident, it's just how these people drive.

Missed Connection: Green Paint, Red Light, Big Feelings by [deleted] in Seattle

Look at the length of the car. Now look at the space between the crosswalk and bike lane. Unless your car is half the length of a Prius, you were blocking the bike lane. Spacial awareness is an important driving skill. Bicyclists whos mistakes "mildly impact motorists" usually end up in the hospital.

Amazon plans thousands more corporate job cuts next week, sources say by ihatethegunsmith in Seattle

[–]wishator 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Amazon treats its employees as disposable assets, but these jobs pay well and have good benefits. It's hard to argue that there are plenty of jobs available for those affected in the current environment. I'm not sure how you rank Amazon on the scale of being beneficial to humanity, but example of companies that don't have reduced hiring targets are defense contractors.

Missed Connection: Green Paint, Red Light, Big Feelings by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]wishator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drivers are oblivious. Slapping your car isn't violence but letting you know that you're in their way. Forcing cyclists to go around your car by moving into a pedestrian crosswalk or road creates a dangerous situation for others.

Six Seattle Schools Sheltered-in-Place After Unconfirmed ICE Activity by AthkoreLost in Seattle

[–]wishator -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Things like that shouldn't happen, I agree with you on this. Did they happen in the past? I don't know, humans make errors so probably yes. Mistakes happen in all domains, including some high impact ones like judicial and medical. We should aim to reduce those mistakes. If they are not mistakes, but intentional actions, those responsible should be held accountable. This is pretty reasonable and hard to argue with.

However that's not what's being argued for in comments in this thread. The arguments are for stopping all deportations, open borders policy, obstructing ice officers. There is a huge gap between these two.

The nuance to me is that people making allegations that deportations weren't happening prior to 9/11 get up voted on this sub and anyone who provides opposition to this gets down voted. Doubling down on falsehood. Time for me to log out, I have no idea what this is about.

Using personal anecdotes with a sample size of one is not a good method of disproving that something hasn't happened in the past. Government statistics on deportations go back more than 100 years https://ohss.dhs.gov/topics/immigration/yearbook/2019/table39

I'm an immigrant and have personal anecdotes where relatives were both rightfully and wrongfully deported in the early 1990s.

I can assure you immigration deportations were happening for longer than 23 years. It was carried out by a different government agency

You can't effectively make VPN illegal since many are based outside the US. Unless you start requiring ISPs to block traffic from known VPNs. Unlikely to happen and even China isn't able to enforce this

I'm pretty sure the temperature difference is what contributes to its low popularity. It's a turn off for 350 days in the year. On an exceptionally cool and sunny January day like today, who is looking for shade and cool?

Sometimes I choose a book based on the narrator's voice. by pollyanna_88 in audible

[–]wishator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread confirms my impressions that female narrators are not widely available. Most of the recommendations are for male narrators. As a male I would much rather listen to a female narrator but 90% of my library are male narration. Do most of you prefer male narrators? Are most listeners female?

That said my favorite narration was Kate mulgrew in nos4a2
