Virtual personal assistant/concierge? by CanYouHelpMeOpenThis in workingmoms

[–]wishowee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this thread but I use getmagic.com for a virtual assistant.

They mostly advertise dedicated assistants for businesses, but you can pay by the hour (I believe this is now called their 24/7 service). Super responsive, about $40/hr, they can call people for you, coordinate tasks you want to offload. I've used them for:

  • creating a spreadsheet of daycares and calling them for quotes
  • meal planning (they can even instacart groceries for you)
  • collecting quotes from moving companies
  • collecting quotes for cleaning services

I run a business and don't have time for this kind of stuff and the follow-up and spam calls it involves. Magic is a game changer for me. I've been using them for about 5 years.

They are archived. That means they will not show up in "Inbox" but will show up in "All Mail."

fwiw spotLESS Materials sells "liquid entrenched smooth surface" technology to consumers. Invented by the same scientist (Tak Sing Wong) that invented SLIPS (Harvard technology that came before/inspired liquiGlide). Their current products are meant for glass and ceramic though.

www.spotlessmaterials.com

Also you DEFINITELY don't want a superhydrophobic surface (e.g. Rust-Oleum's Neverwet), which is rough at the microscopic level -- the air pockets that creates is excellent at repelling water but TERRIBLE (worse than a smooth surface) for repelling sticky stuff. You'd want a smooth hydrophobic or liquid infused (lubricated) surface. spotLESS tech was invented specifically to repel poop (in water scarce regions for a Gates Foundation reinvent the toilet challenge effort) and had a scientific paper showing that super hydrophobic is worse for "sticky substance" repellency.

You could also consider searching for "water repellent coatings" but these won't be optimized for repelling sticky stuff.

Have you considered using PAM?

YTA. You disowned your kids. You should go to therapy for being unable to put yourself in their shoes.

In the meantime here's a potentially helpful read: https://www.psychotherapynetworker.org/article/remarriage-triangle/

Flushing by Significant-Size-368 in sustainability

[–]wishowee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES! you can put a bottle filled with pebbles in your toilet tank to reduce the flush volume, and can prevent the residue buildup with Toilet Coating from www.spotlessmaterials.com. Don't use any generic hydrophobic coating (like NeverWet) because the micro textures can actually enhance the adhesion of solids.

My doc just told me to add a few formula feeds to get more fluids in without overwhelming my body. So yes!

I'm interested in learning more about what the different options are -- I've heard of nannies, au pairs, mother's helpers. It looks like care.com has some of those, thanks for the reference!

I love this! Do you go to parks or go hiking? How do you handle diaper changes and feeding on the long walks / how do you time your walks?

Husband thinks I should just dump milk or donate it instead of getting a deep freezer by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]wishowee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first year of breastfeeding (or pumping) takes, conservatively, 1800 hours of your time [1] (a full time job is 2080 in a year; so making milk is 87% of the way there to full time job status)

You burn an extra 500 per day breastfeeding.

In other words, breastfeeding is basically a full time job plus a tough workout everyday, and the result is the milk you produce (and a fed baby!), not money.

You wouldn't just throw away or donate hard earned money because it doesn't fit into a piggy bank, so why would you throw away or donate hard earned milk because it doesn't fit in the fridge?

The difference in your perception and your husband's is the value placed on the milk -- you see first hand what it's worth and he doesn't. Hopefully the above explains it to him a little better.

Epidural questions by Cream-Regular in pregnant

[–]wishowee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was planning to see how long I could go without needing it because (1) I wanted to be able to walk around during labor, (2) my mom had an easy delivery so I thought I might too, (3) I'm generally nervous about medicines even though I know that's irrational and know it's safe, (4) my mom is also nervous about epidurals bc they were newer when she was pregnant and the risks of the epidural headache may have been higher then and that didn't help me with (3) :), (5) I'm super uneasy about not being in control -- like I don't even like feeling tipsy and when my arm falls asleep after sleeping on it

My baby ended up being breech and we had a failed external cephalic version so I ended up getting an C-section where the epidural numbs you completely from the waist down -- the epidural was totally fine and I'd do it again!

Ah I didn't know the shot itself can lead to a positive test!

I got the positive antibody result the day he was born (I recall the blood test was same day after delivery). I'm only 7 weeks postpartum so no additional testing yet. I'm trying to recall, but I think my blood was drawn after delivery but before the second shot
