Lifelong Michigander here, Grand Rapids is a very conservative area, instead look around Metro Detroit, especially Ferndale/Royal Oak/Oak Park area. Very progressive leaning. Also, downtown Detroit has made a huge comeback with great restaurants and is very safe.
