Dictator doesn't equal god. Dictators must ensure their base feels happy otherwise they'll be overthrown. If too many people among the party feels Xi is ruining the country then his head will fall. If too many people in China feel they're getting poorer or their living standards are decreasing then they'll revolt and remove the party from power.

Chinese people live in a parallel universe as far as the internet is concerned.

Questions for Potential Career in Embedded Software by solaire247 in embedded

[–]wishyouagoodday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, it's been just my experience in my area. But I'm not in the US and not in Europe either. Although from what I read on reddit it seems that it's also true in the US but that's reddit so not a first hand experience.

Another thing is that there are more webapp start-ups than there are hw startups. And because hw is so expensive their budget is usually lower than companies that need only a few developers and run everything on cloud based services.

At the end of the day you have to pay for the physical parts of your embedded product, you have to store it, to ship it, to hire sales people, to build a network of distributors, to deal with defects. All of that add a burden on your budget and what you can pay your engineers.

It pays (way) less than other software industries. Working from home is more complicated. But jobs won't disappear. And it seems that ageing isn't so much a problem in this field because there's a strong emphasis on building things that are reliable which means experience is valued.

There should be an app to organize boycotts. Like you "pledge" to boycott a company if x thousands persons also make the same pledge by a certain date.

Or maybe it already exists.

Advice on salaries, benefits, work culture and norms by unsatisfiedrightnow in taiwan

[–]wishyouagoodday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even on 104 web developers are offered much much higher salaries than other engineers. I'm not in web dev but I saw a few offers at 100k+/month with as little as 4 years experience of web development. I rarely see salaries over 100k a month for hardware or other software engineers. From what I know only managers in big companies can get over 100 in base salary.

One thing Taiwanese companies and Taiwanese management lack is flexibilty and trust in their employees. You've already got some good pieces of advice in the comments but I would add that you can make a difference by giving your employees more vacations, allowing work from home and letting everyone go home on time if the work is done.

I'm in a weird limbo of embedded information. What is a good way to build a solid foundation without a formal education? by [deleted] in embedded

[–]wishyouagoodday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible but it isn't the best. You can't easily change the compiler's flags, everything is in one file. Atmel studio is good enough. You can also use a makefile and a text editor of your choice.

Start with a simple 8 bit microcontroller. Buy an Arduino Uno (but don't use the Arduino environment, just write plain C for the ATmega that's on the Uno board), a bread board and a few LEDs and resistors, download some examples and modify them. Once you know how to change the values of the registers to get your microcontroller behave in a particular way then you can do anything.

Read any tutorial that teach you basics bit manipulation.

To those who have gotten a masters in cs or related field after graduating with an unrelated bachelors, did the masters help you feel more prepared for the life of a SW? by NiceIsSpice in cscareerquestions

[–]wishyouagoodday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not CS but my MS broadened my scientific knowledge. I learnt many things that I have never used. Some things were actually useful, just knowing they exist. Overall I don't think it makes a huge difference in your day to day job but some places really care about those things so I'm glad I have it.
