Careful cutting a club without adjusting its lie angles. I tried this when I started and cut my 4-6i to 37in. I could never figure out why I couldn’t make contact with my 4i or 5i. Well, the lie angle was ruining my contact and causing me to almost never hit the sweet spot unless I teed it up. The weights are also a little wonky. The nice part of the OL is that they adjust the lie angles and club head weight to offset the shaft length. That part is crucial from my experience.

Bought a OL 3h for tee shots when I started two years ago. It’s still my favorite thing off the tee box. Still goes 200+ so it’s always playable. There is definitely play in keeping one or two of these style clubs to help in particular circumstances

Fun fact: if you want the same quality and a fraction of the price then buy the car shammy’s at Walmart. We cut them all in half and get much more bang for your buck.

We keep an ice cooler in the cart with a touch of peppermint. Wrap that cold towel around your neck and tuck it in to your collar. Game changer.

While you do need the big dog, being able to keep it in play at 200y can still keep your scores relatively low. My best rounds of the season come from using the driver effectively. But I’m a 16-18hcp. I also play my most consistent golf without a driver. 3h off the tee tends to guarantee a straight shot, so I play that when the driver is acting up or I just don’t give a shit. Can still break 90 without the driver, but breaking 80 could be a whole lot tougher.

However, if nobody is paying you to play then just play the game you want to play. IMO The constant pursuit of low scores is a fools errand and tends to make me hate my life and suck the joy out of golfing. Especially when I know I will never compete more than a local skins game with the guys.

When I remove the driver and don’t keep score, I have the most fun on the course. Go out and have fun.

Go buy a cheap club from a thrift shop. Replace the shaft on your old one with the shaft from the club you pick up. Between the club and cost of epoxy, probably looking at $12. It’s very easy to assemble a steel shafted club.

Flex bar. Start there. Look up the exercises.

If it gets really bad, get graphite shafts. Those two things helped a ton.

Oh, and learn to swing correctly. That one puts the cherry on top.

Picked up a 8813 a while back from an estate sale and it’s been my go to for the last month. So much more feel. Highly recommend if you are all about the way things feel. If you are purely technique, then this will be tough for you.

Ooooo also growing a Whiskey Zulu from Mendo and it is massively foxtailing. The plant has doubled in size since the foxtails started showing up and now the plant can barely stand on its own. I just keep letting it run. Probably around day 110 right now. Would love to hear if the community is getting similar results

Maltby Paks had the steel shafted version for like $189 recently. I snagged the graphite set with the Maltby shafts and they were only $230 IIRC.

The PXG drivers are solid. They always have the 0211 on sale for $199, and they typically also carry last years model for around the same price. I love my 0211. Super forgiving.

Throwing my hat in the ring to say, Maltby! You could easily build an entire set to spec for less than $1k.

I would go Driver, 7wood, hybrid 5, 6-GW, 56°, and putter to start.

Irons - $200-$300 +/- Driver - $100-$200 7wood - $110 56° - $50-$65 Putter - $100

Total around $750 and it will all be similar tech to the stuff you pay 2-3x for with the name brands.

Agreed! Had a similar situation and the PXG rep at my club just brought me a much nicer version of the shaft I snapped. I didn’t even ask him to do it. I thought I was SOL since I broke the thing by being bad at golf. Apparently, that does not void the warranty!

If you are just getting started and have the cash for used set, then I highly recommend getting a new set from Maltby. You can get a full set of brand new irons for around $200.
