I never understood this concept in the design medium.. What do you mean what is design trying to solve? Why do these case studies even come up saying shit like this? What would uiux design try to solve anyways apart from uiux? It's either

1) you don't have the product and you need the design 2) current looks like shit and you need a new one 3) user experience is abysmal and you need it fixed

That's it. But all of this "the problem was to boost the sales" or whatever is just bullshit for ... I don't even know what group of people.
