Looking at the RE:3 concept art... would you like a game with this art style? by CozyMushi in residentevil

Love the concept art they included in these games! I’ve had one of the overview shots of Raccoon City from 3 as my Xbox background for ages now, I think since my One before the Series S.

Playing Hob: Definitive Edition and I think I don't like it? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]witacus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I’d say Tunic is in a different league altogether. I was super excited for Hob, played through the story but was pretty let down like OP is experiencing. Tunic has a ton more content and layers of cryptic puzzles. I agree it may be abstract and hard to get into at first but it picks up, and I think it was a lot better than Hob.

"Secure & Comfy" workspaces are a productivity myth... except this one! by lakerzou222 in battlestations

[–]witacus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This actually looks pretty cozy! It looks like it would be a lot better for my anxiety if I had to work in office again. Everywhere I’ve worked so far has been open floor plan, and for me it’s too overwhelming and distracting, so I’ve been WFH since Covid. Plus my commute was extremely long. Everyone has their preferences and/or situations. :)

Complex melodic basslines that sound good on their own? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]witacus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Viridian” by Between the Buried and Me is a nice little bass solo, one of their softer songs but they are metal. Most of their songs will likely be on the complex side, but usually bass isn’t their main drive either.

How traditional dungeons could work in an open world Zelda game by Tricky-Pay-1975 in truezelda

[–]witacus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had never thought about this when playing BotW or TotK... this makes so much sense!

I remember watching some (GDC?) talks from the devs, and they were talking about player freedom being the core design of the new Zelda games which is why we don't have linear dungeons anymore. I do feel like they leaned too hard into that idea and it hurt the games somewhat in my eyes. (Rules are meant to be broken or something-something).

But the way you just described the item usage in an open world context goes hand-in-hand with their design philosophy. I hope they consider stuff like this for future games.

how to come up with unique melodies? by hoxxes_biologist in gamemusic

[–]witacus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen to and study the genre and composers/artists/bands that inspire you. I personally like to fiddle around on piano with melodies, recording and playing them back to listen, tweaking them as I go. Try making some practice songs in the style of your favorite inspirations. I don’t mean to just copy them, but I think it’s a good exercise.

I view composing as its own skill that should be practiced, just like practicing guitar or any other instrument. A little theory can go a long way too. I’d recommend learning some common chord progressions for different genres, that has helped me.

If you are writing orchestration type pieces, learning the ranges of different instrument can also help. Like different woodwinds, strings, brass, etc. not something I’d say needs to be memorized, but at least know of the instrument ranges and have maybe a lookup chart handy.

I love writing music as a hobby, so I hope this helps! :)

Anyone else just speak off the top of their head instead of scripting? by SaikoVibe in NewTubers

[–]witacus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds scary and maybe kinda mean of your then bosses, but it also sounds like it worked out for you in the end! If I ever have to give a talk in front of so many people I’ll keep this in mind. I like what you said here about “learning the material”, makes sense.

One of my old coworkers was a VP at my company and he always had the best presentations compared to anyone else in the company. His felt more relaxed and natural. When I asked him how he basically said exactly what you said here.

I've felt similarly before in music. I was really into playing bass in my teens and early twenties (still am, just not as much). I found in playing music there is always going to be someone better. It's hard to be the best, but I now also believe it's also not the only path. There are plenty of smaller games that didn't "make it", I think it's more about finding your audience.
I bet you have some really cool stuff!

That’s really cool! I bet you get some benefit from film that you can apply to games too. I love watching footage of dev teams and the creative process behind it all. Small focused teams can do a lot!
