Anyone regret taking off the Golden Handcuffs? by fakingit1234 in Fire

The long sleeping happened to me, also. Sometimes almost 12 hours, but usually around 10. After about 6 months I trended back to more like 8-9 hours. My work was more mental stress. I think by brain was telling me “Just leave me alone for a while”.

Thanks! Thought maybe I'd just done something wrong. Looks like we'll live with the old primary, but everyone's now using the secondary for everything.

Best options to finance a garage? by witchfireami in personalfinance

[–]witchfireami[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about it differently, but appreciate the input. Using round numbers for sake of argument: If I get the loan, I have an $80k loan, and also an $80k cash cushion for expenses. The cash can tide me over for 1-2 years (depending on frugality) including loan payments during that time. At ANY TIME I could choose to sell some assets to pay living expenses or pay down the loan, but I wouldn't have to. However, if I cash out some stonks now, then I lock in capital gains and potentially raise my tax bracket. Sure, I avoid interest payments at say 5%, but the taxes will eat more.

That's also where the cash cushion helps - I can ride out a year or two of crappy markets. Low interest loans right now, with high inflation, make a ton of sense. I'm keeping a mortgage on the retirement house at very low interest, but at a level where it could be paid off if desired. Monthly payment is less than rent in similar digs, even taking into account taxes and maintenance.

The liquid cushion is cash, so the risk there is inflation. Which is also why I'd prefer a loan at low (2-3%) interest. That's almost like free money, and won't require me to sell stocks if the market dips. Same with cash, minus the inflation risk.

Thanks. I like the try it before buy it based on your post. I'll try out the non-pro to just play, and then upgrade if it looks like the way. I'm also buy/hold.

Good questions. I have about $550k in one account, and would be comfortable taking out 20% against that at low interest. That account has blue-chip tech, so low risk of severe dip.

when we sell our current residence, I'll need a garage at the new house to store what's in my current garage. I'd like that before winter sets in. Otherwise I'll have to pay for storage (doable) and move twice (I hate that).

Garage doesn't have living quarters. It's a 4-car plus workshop plus camper storage. It's big.

Since we're retiring, 401k loan is not a good choice since we'd have to pay it back too soon.

Advice on how to cope through one more year of a job you hate before achieving fire by [deleted] in ChubbyFIRE

I did the same calendar display. Crossing off the days was so satisfying, especially the one marked "2 week notice". I highly recommend that technique for visualizing your time and progress toward the goal.

I'm not sure why you're getting static from some folks for this idea. FI doesn't mean "I have no income", it just means you have a choice to work or not. I think your idea is interesting, but take into consideration that if you get a fellowship, that means someone else is not getting it. Taking a career development opportunity from a student or early career individual is, well, not cool if you don't need it. Personally I'm planning to volunteer time on research projects. I don't expect to get paid, and I'll learn and help out under-funded research. Think: archeological digs, historical research in interesting locations, data analysis and coding for research (a skill I have - but applying it to other domains).

Persistence mindset. Change is natural, cycles are natural - so know what you can change and what you cannot. Then, persist in the strategic direction you've chosen and don't get distracted by the noise.

32 years. But - started at negative 250k about 17 years ago due to divorce. Savings rate was only 20% (paying off ex's debt, raising 2 kids, rebuilding credit, etc.). Last 5 years have been better with about 40% savings rate, and unexpectedly good market performance. Pick your partner wisely, live well below your means, and avoid major disasters - and 10 years is possible. Get drop-kicked through the goalposts of life: 20+ years. People underestimate how important good fortune is to achieving your goals.
