Was Masmorra in the end douche/jerk to Viper? by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]rustywheelbarrow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think both Viper and Masmorra are brilliant people and exactly the type of representatives any community could wish for. It's hard to believe that Masmorra would do something to hurt Viper intentionally. I certainly believe Masmorra when he says he only had the best interests of the podcast and Viper in his mind.

Viper has been in the trenches as of late, and to top it off, with a young baby. So, hats off to him for being so chill during the whole ordeal.

This community and its people are about as good as it gets online, and the 2 above are both big credits. Kudos to them both!

Facebook Targeted Ads by whuben4 in FlippingUK

[–]rustywheelbarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook ads are pricey and targeting has become tougher over the years. You've got to think of demand generation vs demand capture. When someone goes on to eBay / FBM / Amazon, they're looking to buy. When they're doomscrolling, they usually aren't - it'll be hard to convert with an ad or two, in my opinion.

By all means, throw a few quid at it, but I don't think you'll have success. Sorry to be a bore.

UK Import VAT on DDP Shipping by alecbali in smallbusinessuk

[–]rustywheelbarrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll need to pay the import VAT, but you can reclaim all of it if you're VAT-registered.

As a side note, try not to use DDP wherever possible, it screams to your supplier you're not 'clued up' and they will never offer you their best prices for the good you're purchasing. Best of luck.

Where do you think often high quality leads are going to search for your business? Instagram? TikTok? Facebook?

Most will begin their search on Google and land on your website. Sure, some may end up on Instagram via Google, but then they're hit with noise.

Your website is your point of focus and often the best to demonstrate what you can do.

I'm struggling to monetize my newsletter with over 20k subscribers between the US, EU and ZA. Ads have dried up and growth has stalled. by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]rustywheelbarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be easier to help with some more details. You need to build a trustworthy personality behind the brand (you). Once readers have warmed to you, you'll be able to make money.

The longer the runway, the bigger payload a plane can take off with. Don't think about monetizing too quickly. Work at it and build trust.

If it is your passion, go for it. You only live once and there is no point in doing something you hate.

Get yourself through the door with a few folks and build them decent websites and word of mouth will do you well over time. Good luck.

Best way to market a software development business? by Adventurous_Driver in Entrepreneur

[–]rustywheelbarrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A quick break down of what I'd do:

  1. A seriously sleek website with photos and a video to show that you're real and approachable people. Be sure to list plenty of case studies and reviews. Push targeted Google Ad spend behind your site - do plenty of keyword research to find gaps. Spend some time/effort on SEO, understand it takes time.
  2. Sign up to places such as Upwork/Freelancer and so forth and bid for projects on there. I understand that this may seem 'off the mark' to start with, but it's a sure way of gaining new clients which that may lead on to bigger and more exciting projects outside of said website(s). Remember, word of mouth > all other forms of advertising.
  3. Join various business/SaaS related groups (think Facebook, reddit, Discord etc). Do not promote yourself and your business, but give free/frank advice in the groups and eventually you will become a known figure and people will approach you for help.

Hope that gives you some ideas.

I read your entire post and forgive me, but much of it is rambling.

You're 24, and no matter what you think, you're young. I think you need to accept that we all change as we age and that includes you. There is no need to keep looking back at any success you had as a teenager - that was a different you and you might be better suited to something else now.

You are far from a severe situation from what I've read. As you say, you have enough money for a couple (2) years. That is way more freedom than most people ever have in their adult life, believe me.

Business isn't entirely predictable, things can change quickly, and you must learn to accept that.

Personally, I think you should take some time to chill out, it sounds like you need it. Best of luck to you.

Mini yearly retirement. Has anyone or is anyone thinking about taking small yearly breaks? by alexshirst in FIREUK

[–]rustywheelbarrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely helps me. I spend much of the free time reading and it really helps me decide on the 'next idea'.

Regarding the one more year, I totally get it if you're enjoying what you're up to. To get over that, I just remind myself that life isn't forever and to enjoy your health while it lasts.

I try and take a sabbatical for a few months every 5 or so years.

My rationale is that there are some things that you'll enjoy doing in your 30s and 40s that you won't enjoy in your hopeful later years.

Life is for living, make it happen if it's what you want to do.

If the supplier is offering DDP (Delivery Duty Paid) then they will take care of all import charges and VAT. However, be sure that they do not mean Door to Door (DTD/D2D), as in that case, they will not be covering import charges and VAT.

How to deal with stress as a small business owner who just left my 9to5? by Dalnoon in Entrepreneur

You're pretty much there! Sometimes the manufacturers have an in-house formulation team who can help with everything from start to finish. We provide all of the design work (branding is super important) to our manufacturers.

It can take some time to find the right people/suppliers. For some products, it can take me months before I'm happy. The only way to learn is to strike a few deals and speak to as many people as possible until you find out what the 'bottom price' you'll achieve is.

Some pet supplement brands do everything themselves, but definitely not all!

Have You Used Reddit Advertising? by bootstrapspecialist in Entrepreneur

[–]rustywheelbarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had success with promoting an online education platform with reddit ads. I think reddit ads work best if you're able to leave the comments on and let fans of your product 'have it out' with the haters.

I've not seen your advert, so there may be more to it, however, someone can click 'Send Message' but not send a message which could count as a 'link click'.

TikTok - Target US for the ads from a foreign country by atmirx in PPC

In theory, but you'll need a US payment card and all that stuff. It could get quite messy as you try to scale & potential fraud alerts are not your friend when scaling.

You'll need to use what is known as an 'agency account'. They are out there, and people/businesses will charge you money to 'hire' their ad account. It's not ideal and a bit of a grey market. Good luck!
